Spurrier hints at sanctions

NCAA violations could cost program up to three scholarships, coach says

USC coach Steve Spurrier said Monday that the Gamecocks’ football program could lose as many as three scholarships as a result of the ongoing NCAA investigation into violations that occurred under former coach Lou Holtz.

“The only thing I heard is we may lose two or three scholarships,” Spurrier said in a meeting with local print reporters. “Then they’ll take that and move on.”

While Spurrier did not elaborate on the extent of possible sanctions, his comments were the first indication by a school official that the violations were significant enough to merit penalties.

USC athletics director Mike McGee called talk of NCAA sanctions “premature,” adding that he hopes the nearly 3-year-old investigation will be concluded when he retires June 30.

“(The case) is still being worked. They’re very busy. They’ve got lots of cases they’re working,” McGee said. “I think it’s a reality (to be finished by June), but there are several steps still ahead of us.”

Russ Pate, the school’s NCAA faculty athletics representative, said he does not believe “there’s been much movement lately.”

“I’m not aware that anything is imminent,” said Pate, a professor in the exercise science department. “I wish it was. (Spurrier) may be right about that, but I sure can’t confirm it.”

School officials had been working toward a summary disposition, a process in which the NCAA and the school agree on violations and the corresponding sanctions or self-imposed penalties. McGee, USC general counsel Walter H. Parham and SEC commissioner Mike Slive traveled to the NCAA’s Indianapolis headquarters a year ago to discuss the investigation.

McGee would not comment when asked about whether the school is seeking a summary disposition.

The investigation is believed to be centered on academic eligibility issues. Former senior associate AD Tom Perry, who oversaw the academic and student support program, left the school in June in a personnel move related to the NCAA case.

Two auditors were on campus last week to examine USC’s compliance procedures as part of the SEC’s regular review of its schools’ compliance efforts. The auditors met with several USC officials, including Pate and Spurrier. During head-coaching stops at Duke and Florida, Spurrier’s programs were never cited for major NCAA violations, and he said he hoped the NCAA considers his “track record.”

“The (auditors) were very complimentary of my background and what we did at Florida and how we worked there,” Spurrier said. “Hopefully, whatever penalties that have to be assessed here will be very light because of the infractions that happened three, four years ago — five years ago.”

Should the Gamecocks be penalized, history will repeat itself for Spurrier. Shortly after he replaced Galen Hall at Florida in 1990, the Gators were placed on probation for two years violations that took place during Hall’s tenure.

“Why punish a group of young men that had nothing to do with what happened four or five years ago?” Spurrier said. “But then again, that’s the way the NCAA’s always operated, so maybe that’s the way it’s going to be.”

:censored: Actually call me a pesimist but I believe ALL top College Football programs skate and cross the legality line.. EVEN OUR BELOVED TENNESSEE!! The question is do we break it to the point the NCAA is forced into action. From a Spurrier vs Holtz comparison though I like both coaches in College Football.

Spurrier brings the Fun and Gun. Throw first and hope your not tackling Corners immediatley after. Hey its fun to watch at times.

Holtz brings a much needed sense of Senility to the game. This is the orginal 4th and 1 deep post pattern coach. He won more games by doing the exact opposite of common sense than any other coach in history. He busted Florida 2 years ago on a fake field goal pass in the second quarter. It threw Florida off so bad SC snuck away with a win.

I like both coaches and feel a SENSE OF PRIDE when CPF steps on the field and just flat out beats them from the side line.

I am looking forward to seeing Urban Meyers spread option offense come at our defense and see what CPF does against it. I also look forward to the vocal and gametime sparring match between Fulmer and Spurrier.

You can't spell Citrus with out UT! That was hilarious, so was the way his dominance ended immediatley after he said it. Well he is in South Carolina now and you cant spell San Quentin Correctional Facilty with out USC.

College football rules all sports because of these rivalrys and I am looking forward to laughing at all the Bammers, Swamp Rats, Lamecocks, and Georgia Ballhogs as Tennessee runs the table. And if they do not do as well as we hope I will take their taunts in stride.

On a side note did anyopne notice that CNNSI did not list Gerald Riggs Jr as an early season Heisman hopeful? Something is wrong there.. I hope he busts 2000 yards and when accepting his award says I want to thank ESPN, CCNSI, and all the other USC fans who only looked at USC and OU for Heisman canidates. Perhaps now you will realize that no Heisman list be made without looking at UT.

Ok I am done before I rants about the Woodson Heisman over Manning.
