Loss to ETSU: beware Nicholls State/ La Monroe

No, no, no. 2018 ETSU is not 2016 Nicholls State and it CERTAINLY isn't 2007 Louisiana-Monroe. Not even close. This is a resurgent FCS program that is still trying to get its sea legs. ETSU is 1-14 away from Johnson City since restarting the program. There is simply no way in hell they're going to march into an SEC stadium and get a win. Tennessee will be up at least 5 touchdowns by halftime. Reserves will play the entire second half. This isn't going to be a contest, and neither is next week's game against UTEP, which is probably the worst team in the FBS.

Alabama lost to ULM at the end of what was already a lost season, not the second game of the year. Player confidence plays a big part in losing to cupcakes. If the players sense that its all over they stop trying.
The week before they were ranked and lost to Miss St. They had stuff to play for, its just that their offense was so one dimensional at that point in the year, it was basically the offense went as John Parker Wilson went, and that wasn't a good thing.

Tennessee started out 0-6 back in 1988 and won their remaining 5 games. Those 5 wins laid the foundation beginning the next year (11-1), of more than a decade of 9 and 10 win seasons including one National Championship.

For some reason, I’m getting a feeling that this game could play out like the UMass game last year. Somebody talk me out of it...

And ETSU gets a big fat check
Which is really the only reason for them to play this game in the first place. Remember, they killed their FB team years ago due to lack of funding. This 1 game is probably like half of their athletic budget. Randy knows his team cant compete, and they will play as such.

They should have never dumped their FB program. It was making them money. The ETSU administration is almost as dumb as UTs.

They killed it because it was losing money and a huge drain on other sports and academics. They dipped into the general fund nearly every year toward the end.

You do know he inherited an 8 loss team, right? Yes, Saban when 6-6 in the regular season his first year, but he inherited a team that went 6-6 the previous year in the regular season.

5 wins is an improvement. Six is my goal, but winning a single SEC game is an improvement over 2017.

My opinion is that a quality coach should be able to go 6-6 with the current roster and schedule - regardless of 2017 results. 2015 and 2016 were 9-win seasons with Butch friggin Jones. 6-6 is not exactly fantasyland. If anything, it's a lowball number.

Wrong. If we lose either one of those games then Pruitt and his entire staff needs to be fired immediately afterward.
Yea and that’s how we actually end up with a Greg Schiano as coach. You fire a coach, after one year barring scandal, no one will touch you. Combine that with the fact we are already viewed as a dumpster fire it would be the nail in the coffin for the next decade. I agree the loss would be unacceptable. But no matter what happens Pruit isn’t going anywhere after this season.

I am all for giving Pruitt time. If he loses to any SEC team then no big deal. But losing to teams like ETSU? Sorry, but imo, thats a fireable offense. I know we wont lose though.

Kirby’s first team came within a whisker of losing to FCS Nicholls State in their second game in 2016, on their way to a 7-5 season that included a loss to Vandy with a loaded roster.

Kirby was a whisker away from being 8-4 also, until this happened...

You disagree? Why? What

Yes I disagree, but this is why I said you were a trip. I said if we lost to Florida my attitude would change. Just meant I was gonna be pissed and not as optimistic for the remainder of the season. I think its a winnable game.

And your response was....

So year 1 with an entire new staff, a MAC level talent roster and new schemes, your opinion will change if Pruitt loses to UF? I mean just lol.

I know there's a huge difference between FL and ETSU...duh, but....

Wrong. If we lose either one of those games then Pruitt and his entire staff needs to be fired immediately afterward.

..."Fired Immediately?" Errybody?
