I have to say ... from a fans stand point the whole game seemed odd. The continuous comparison between the game and the App. State/Michigan game. This was solid even before the game even started. The physiological effect had a toll on players and fans. That with the many other issues ( delay running of T , TD not a TD, phantom cramps). I'm not making excuses, but this game was billed a total failure for the Vols from the beginning. I'm glad they pulled off the win

Appy State turned out to be better than most folks expected, so I'm not going to fret too much over this near loss. They could go undefeated the rest of the season. Having a tough opening game is probably better for us psychologically than a walk-over would have been.

From a coaches' perspective, there's really no better way to start the season when you have a highly ranked team that still hasn't "arrived" yet. You have a ton of things on film to correct and your guys know they're vulnerable week one.

App State challenged us in every aspect of the game and probably should have won. Luckily for us, VT plays an absolute cupcake today and likely won't learn much about their team before Bristol.

They'll have a bit more weaknesses to exploit from the film of our game, but they could have glaring weaknesses that they aren't aware of until the game is underway next Saturday.

Could not agree more with this post. The game Thursday night may have well been a blessing in disguise.

Agree. Everybody in orange overconfident. To the point of taking this for granted. A future NFL back dropping a punt recovered and scored by supposedly weak opponent sort of set an early tone. They were smaller, but waaaay faster on the lines. The "bad call" in the end zone and on and on. Glad we won. "Snap and clear" right CBJ?

I disagree, I think this transferred all the stress of the first game to the VT game. The Offense looked confused, and sometimes I think Butch worries to much about appearances.......and he tried to prove he is a top tier coach, but is trying to out coach vs. coaching. The App State HC appeared to have more of a clue to the game than our whole sideline, a veteran field goal kicker would have given him the game.....imo. CBJ just got schooled by a very bright and up and coming HC. NOW, all the pressure is on a P5 team at the B@B. His calculated risk, blew up in his face and now instead of running a confident team out on the field, the mental stress of the last game will be there. I love coach Jones, but sometimes the ego can choke the life out of common sense, just play the game regardless of team and beat the hell out of teams we should of, because of this miscalculation, many players were unable to get live football reps and what does that do to your depth?.........that right......doesn't help or develop anyone. I am not apologizing for Butch, if he worked for me, I would make sure (crystal clear) that he do his job every game, and that vanilla crap was for rookies, and by the way coach Deborg.........never ever tell Dobbs to sit in that pocket, it doesn't take a rocket scientist (see what I did there?) to know, he more effective when he is allowed to run.....because he is Duel Threat QB! that is what he does.....15 yards rushing is better than a 20 yard incomplete pass.....now pull you head at of your......and get these young men ready for Bristol!

Did the Vols win, seems like they lost a big one

App St was better than most thought and apparently we held back Dobbs and ran a Vanilla offense, even if it meant losing our first game so we wouldn't give any tape for our future opponents to watch and plan for. Our O line got man-handled all night by smaller, faster D lineman, and each of our senior leaders made a bone-head move at least once during the game. Also, apparently the mantra here is the biggest improvement of a team is from week one to week two, so we will be fine and magically be able to compete and beat teams with better coaches and talent across the board with one week of improvement. Should be interesting to see how it all plays out and what is true and not true... time will tell... I saw a team made up of basically the same players as last season who finished strong and were firing on all cylinders in every aspect of the game come out believing their own hype who struggled on offense and who didn't seem mentally prepared to deal with a scrappy team set on upsetting them...

Well, I figured all their guys who beat Michigan were long gone. What I didn't realize was Satterfield was the OC for Appy State back then.

Phantom cramps? Are you kidding? Had several of Appy States best players not been on the bench with trainers, we WOULD have lost. John Law was their best defensive player, and he missed most of the fourth quarter. Just because some airheaded cuties from a sorority suspect they are faking, and you desperately want to get in their pants doesn't make it so.

Alex, I'll take Awkward Analogies out of Left Field for $100.

Many of the same guys from last year, but all new leaders who were maybe forgot Maggitt and Randolph weren't there to make them snap and clear their heads after mistakes. And a few new guys trying to find their role on the team.

Firing on all cylinders? No, not yet. But the question is do they grow from that game? I think (or hope) so.

Coach Richt probably losing a lot of sleep as Miami travels to Boone in 2 weeks to play Appy.

You sure you're not making excuses? Sure seemed like a list of excuses. I'm not sure having to wait an extra 45-60 seconds in the tunnel before running through the T has much to do with Coleman Thomas and our DTs getting walked all night long by App State's D and O linemen.

Spot on!

One thing not addressed here or in many of the other comments is the fact that App State executed their game almost flawlessly. Their men were in position all night and their O line kept our talented d line off their QB for most of the night. That doesn't happen just because they want to win.

They were well coached and executed their game plan and plays very well. We failed to execute the simplest of tasks in every aspect of the game.

For those complaining about the playbook, stop. The offense and defense were basically base sets with very limited adjustments. I would expect that was by design.

The team will open more next week, concentrate on refining them the next week and you will see much more in the FL game.

Our weaknesses were exposed by Appy State and those need to be fixed as soon as humanly possible, but watching Liberty doing so well against VT makes me feel much more optimistic about our next game.
