Losing Wilcox...

Dooley (any coach) is only as good as his assistants. I think we all found that out with Fulmer. Saban is an enigma, but still has an excellent track record for picking good talented coaches. Saban has a good eye for talent, both players and coaches. Dooley has shown he has a good eye for football talent, let's just hope his eye is just as good at evaluating coaches.

What got me so pissed off today was reading so many people acting like losing Wilcox and Sirmon is no big deal. This team isn't good enough to completely revamp the defense, and especially if it's not being done by Shannon, or even maybe Steele.

Yeah, I think most people realize losing them is a big deal. It is just the vocal moronic minority that also started Fire wilcox threads during the season that feel it is no big deal. Personally, I think it is a loss but am not too worried about it, if anything it will help to answer more questions about dooley. If he is going to have any long term success as a coach here, this will not be the first time that he loses an important member of his staff. For this reason one of the most important things for any coach to do, is to be able to make the right decision on their replacement. The way things have worked out now, we get to see his ability to this now. To me this is better then getting ten years down the road and finding out that his success was because of an assistant that Dooley cannot find a competent replacement for.

What other opportunity did west virginia get to beat somebody that was worth a damn besides LSU and Clemson? The next closest was a top 25 Cincinnati team, and they beat them.

interestingly, WVU only beat Cincy 24-21, and Collaros broke his ankle in the first half of that game. WVU was actually trailing at one point in the 4th quarter and had to block a last second field goal attempt by Cincy to preserve the win.

It seems like when we were healthy, we beat a halfway decent team in Cincinatti. We hung 531 yards and 45 pts on them. Cincy held WVU to 404 yds and 24pts.

If Steele thinks this WVU team is good, he doesn't need to come to the SEC.

WVU would beat the **** out of Tennessee, Ole Miss, Vandy, Kentucky, And MSU if they played tonight.

I also would bet scared money on the SEC if they played USCe, Georgia, Or Florida in a bowl.

As to Wilcox and Sirmon they can be replaced long term and we will be fine. Short term is the problem for Dooley the transition cant leave a year gap.

Well the fact his defense hasn't been nothing to write home about for some time. Then the stinker last night. He's not going to be a popular choice if it's him.

Don't want to be the "insider guy" here but I do have a little info. My kid goes to cak with Peter Sirmons kid. They played cyf football. So I got to know the Sirmons really well. Great family, great guy. Did a lot for the cyf (youth football) team and his kid will be a good one some day! This is what I know from beingaround the Sirmons. They wanted to be back out west with family. I am sick of hearing people talk about ut being a sinking ship and coaches just trying to get away. Wilcox and Sirmon wanted to be near family and now they get that chance. Good for them (sucks for us) because both are good up and coming coaches. My point hire guys who want to be at UT!

For sure WVU would be in the upper half of the SEC this year.

My question is is that coach at WVU that good or did he inherit that good of talent?

West Virginia had 533 yds. total offense against LSU, described by most commentators as the best defense in the nation. I wouldn't judge Kevin Steele totally on this game.

and Sirmon is a much bigger deal than you Dool-Aid drinkers want to admit to, but you're going to figure it out soon.

You have been yapping for two days about how Steele is a football God....he just gave up 70 to a ****ty WVU team, and it's not over.

Better hope Precious can get Shannon, or it could be bad news for the defense.

Haven't seen too many posts about Steele being a football guard. Shannon will be the next DC and will be an improvement in recruiting and coaching. This was a blessing in disguise. Huge, homering type hire

Thank-you for sharing that. I met him twice and he couldn't have been more friendly. It's refreshing to hear some intelligent conversation instead of all of these theories people have about why the two left. I guess I may get a bit defensive, but they were our coaches for two years, they worked their butts off, and they don't deserve the disrespect that some of our "fans" give them. They will always be a part of the Vol family to me and I wish them nothing but the best!
