They're not going to name the 2018 coach before the season's over, regardless of when they move on from Butch.

Are you saying we should bring Butch back next year if we don't have a new guy by the end of the Vandy game?

No. Just saying the timing of the announcement is irrelevant.

This season is trashed regardless.

I want to be competitive and win more games this season.
I don't want to keep Butch and have a ceiling of 5-7 and a floor of 3-9.
Going 7-5 or better with an interim coach sounds great right now.

Don't worry its going to happen but Currie is no fool...He is most likely gauging interest in the job from potential candidates...1st call should be to Chip Kelly and if he says no then call Bobby Petrino and get his ass down to Knoxville pronto...I do not care what he has done in the past the man can coach and he has unfinished business in the SEC...I would believe in him and have no doubt he would bolt Louisville to coach UT.

OMG NO!!!!! No more spread offense at TN............ Louisville lost again today..... Chip Kelley is a big boob.......:clapping:

Another reason to fire Butch now is that we'd start getting competent press conferences.

I think he needs to be fired now regardless of his buyout. We are losing recruits now. The early signing period is in Dec. We need a experienced HC that has proven success who can stop the bleeding asap. Maybe even steal some commitments from other schools. Waiting until the end of the season is a bad move.

It's a business decision and not one that is going to cater to the childish fits of the fanbase to meet a certain schedule.

Thank you for this post BearCat! "Childish Fits" is exactly how I would describe the majority of posts on here in the last six weeks.

I suppose they're doing great business, since they had 98k in the stadium today to watch that garbage.

I consider him a fool until he fires Jones.

I wonder if shoop has been allowed to do things his way under butch?

I'm with you. If Shoop could have brought his assistants with him, this defense would be top 10. You don't do what he did at vandy with a inferior roster. Then go to Penn State with a depleted roster and immediately produce a top 10 defense. Then come to Tennessee and suddenly forgot how you do it. With his assistants, recruits and full control over the D, his results would be as good as or better than all the other programs he has excelled at.

Wish our AD cared about football like GA and FL. Both of those schools would have already fired their coaches if they saw this on the field. Hell FL is having discussions over their coach even though they have won the East two traight years.

The Gators are 3-3 and the shark humper remains...for now.

Currie is RESILIENT. He is a COMPLIMENTARY AD. I just hope he SNAPS AND kicks Butch CLEAR off this campus.

Buy out is gonna hurt... then hiring another coach at likely much higher salary will hurt... Currie is likely not getting bankrolled from the faithful either. He is in a bind... looking for deep pockets to get out of this one.

I'm fine with Currie taking as long as he needs to get this right. Butch is gone; pretty much everyone knows that at this point. This season is shot whether Butch finished it out or an interim takes over the rest of the way.

This years recruiting class is going to suffer regardless whether you pull the trigger now or later. Most of those kids built relationships with this staff and most if not all of that staff will be gone next season.

Buyout repercussions don't change until March I believe so it won't matter if they want to pull the trigger early either. Basically I'm fine with whatever Currie decides is best for the program. I could give a damn how Butch is fired. I just want Currie to get this hire right, I don't care about the timetable.

I keep seeing this argument. Why keep butch for another week. Forget the coaches, we have to keep recruits. Cutting jones now can hopefully stop the bleeding of decommitments

Why would that stop the bleeding? Recruits aren't going to commit to an interim coach.

Currie is no clown of an AD like Hamilton or Hart. Just got to be patient, things are getting worked out.

All this talk of Currie meeting behind the scenes with boosters about Butch....having a "list" with Grudens name at the top..along with Chip Kelly etc....and him being committed to returning UT to the top of the SEC ...and more is nothing but unsubstantiated rumor and speculation. The only thing he has said publicly is that we were a play away from beating Florida and celebrating. In essence defending and SUPPORTING Butch 100%...and saying we should be happy with "almost" beating Florida.

That's all we've got. We are all imagining that Currie even gives a crap about getting back on top...but if we base our opinion on what he has SAID...then he really doesn't care.

Maybe Currie's goal is to make sure we are just competitive enough to fend the dogs off. If we win big.....fine...if not...then that's fine too. He's already tempered our unrealistic expectations of (gulp) actually beating Florida. Hey we 'almost' beat 'em. If that last play didn't happen? Gee willickers ...we woulda won.

Any thought of Currie being serious about getting back on top is pure speculation and his words suggest he is not.
