He cited the distance, and I don't blame him or his family with the way the economy is going. I'm sure they don't have all the money like the Clausen's do, and the economic situation is making it even tougher than it was a few years ago.

Also, our football team isn't winning the way it should, or even competing when it comes to losing to decent teams.

The fans boo, albeit for a damn good reason, but it can't be helpful in landing a gifted recruit. These are still kids and they can spook easily in situations like ours.

I just hope that the recruits know that we are by no means booing the players. We are booing the coaches. And maybe that doesn't make the recruit feel great about the coach, but we do have to have some kind of reality to our ridiculous situation.

We have great players, but we don't have great people leading them to be great anywhere else. The program got out of hand earlier this year with the rash of problems off the field, the players make asses of themselves in the NFL (Goodrich, Lewis, Henry, Haynesworth), and now we've lost to two teams; one we should have stomped and one that made us look like we need to be playing in the Big 10.

In short, I don't blame the kid one bit. Hold the milk because this cookie is crumbling fast.

I'm sure the UCLA and Florida game had nothing to do with this, at all.

Well, he apparently said he told the coaches before the Florida debacle, but I, along with almost everyone else, knew we were in for a long season after UCLA.

I was afraid this would happen. The nightmare begins.

It's not about the distance - that's a complete red herring. He decommitted because of the d*mn booers. Plain and simple. We will lose Giles and many more because of the booers too.

Are you happy now? I'm not a Fulmer supporter, but the booing is unacceptable. Even if Fulmer resigned or were fired tomorrow, those booing at the UAB/Florida games put a down payment for a mediocre program for the foreseeable future. The cupboard will be near empty very soon. Thanks.

Also, the "we're booing the coaches, not the players" argument is ridiculous. Nobody in his right mind believes that, and few high school seniors would see that nuance even if it were true.

I think most people would be willing to take a few recruiting losses if it meant Fulmer would be gone this season or next. Players aren't decommitting because of booing, they are decommitting because of deep seated problems in our program. The booing may have had some impact, but the reality remains that these players recognize the decline, pitiful play, and lack of execution on this team.

The boos weren't arbitrary. They were just the latest form of outburst by a fan base that has had its fill of Phil.

This is just the tip of the iceberg...

No fan should boo their own team, i would boo if the coach wouldnt go for it on 4th down that's bout it, CaliVol hit the nail on the head plain and simple.

Incorrect. Many top recruits view a program "on the decline" as an opportunity to play and possibly start as a freshman. How did Notre Dame, Miami and FSU (15-22 collective record in 2007) all end up with Rivals Top 10 recruiting classes? Because of OPPORTUNITY. The booers suck and ended all hope for a turnaround for Fulmer or his successor.

I never thought VOLS fans would be more fair-weather than "football fans" on the West coast. VOLS fans now epitomize fair weather - support the team in triumph and bail when things turn south. Pathetic.

Nobody, expect ignorant rednecks, were booing the team. The sooner you get that thought out of your head, the sooner you'll realize people just plain don't care for Phillip Fulmer. It's not fair weather to boo a head coach and his staff.

How ironic that 2 of those 3 teams you just mentioned ALL had coaching changes in recent history, and as for FSU they have a new coach already in the waiting which they've already announced. Also, you've got to be kidding about killing a turn around for Fulmer's successor, that's the most ignorant thing I've ever heard. Get some new, successful, blood in this program and watch the recruits return to Tennessee.

FSU may not have a coach in waiting if they keep on turning the ball over and scoring 3 points in conference games.

We still got Petty, use Nunes scholly on a dual threat QB or a DT.

whether they're good, great or terrible The U, ND & FSU aren't really hard to recruit to.

So explain South Carolina having a top 6 recruiting class last year at 6-6. Yeah, Spurrier's brand new in Columbia. Your argument regarding recent coaching changes is 50-50 for those mediocre programs with stellar recruiting classes and holds no weight. Ding.

Whether or not UT gets new blood any time soon, the media/recruits will still remember when the fan base completely turned its back on THE TEAM. I could care less about Fulmer, but booing the team has no place in my book.

The only / in this discussion is the one who is proclaiming that people are booing, or turning their back, on the team. Talk about holding no weight. The only thing people are booing or turning their back on is Phillip Fulmer. Also, SC had a bare cupboard before Steve got there, and I'm sure the SC fans will tell you that at least they tried SOMETHING other than giving the same old stale coach chances every year.

Lets cut out the personal attacks.....unless you are gonna personally attack Fulmer like me.

I remember last year there was a nice "F*** You GEORGIA" chant going maybe for NIU we can get the Big Orange Army to start a F*** YOU FULMER chant going, thata way the players know the fans are upset at their incompetent, inept, incapable head football coach.

Tree - no matter what the intent of the boos, the perception in the media and with recruits is that VOLS fans have in fact turned their backs on the team. Fair or not, perception is stronger than reality. That perception will only get stronger and more negative as opposing coaches constantly remind Giles, etc. of that unacceptable behavior. The whole reason we're having this debate is because Nunes decommitted in large part because of the boos. The distance excuse was an attempt at a graceful exit.

Also, why don't you check out all of the posts on this board where people acknowledge booing Crompton? Last time I checked, his name was not Fulmer and he is part of the team.

Now that's funny. :lolabove:

... and for the record, Tree started with the "ignorant" name calling. I was merely responding in kind.
