Looks like Chaney is gone

Spurrier, Bill Walsh , just a couple I can think of that called their own plays. I’m sure there is plenty more calling their own plays that were successful. We’re they good leaders?

Pretty sure Kiffin calls his own plays. Didn't Art Briles at Baylor call his own plays too? What about Chip Kelly? This isn't exactly unprecedented.

What's scary is another mega buyout. Makes me wish our representatives in Nashville would pass legislation prohibiting any buyouts with state employees or state ran/financed institutions. It is way beyond ridiculous what is allowed to go on at UT
Good luck hiring a football coach or his staff without a buyout agreement.

Not a good sign. He needs to be the head coach, not offensive coordinator. He teaches the OC and always has the ability to change the play.
Would you be happy with Kiffin as our head coach? I only mention him because he's a head coach and he calls his own plays. See how that works.

This is dumb. You want to take play calling away from the guy that has called the plays for offenses that have consistently ranked in the top 10-15 in yards and points.

Your issue isn't with the play calling, your issue is that you just don't like the hire. It's okay to not like the hire, but don't make stupid arguments as reasons you don't like it.

Check my post history.....Ive been supportive of the hire, pointing out a potential pitfall isn’t a stupid argument.

Chaney might would stay as OC (not play caller)/QB coach if JH wants him. He loves Knoxville.

He's definitely worth keep if he's willing to coach QBs
Let's ask Chaney to take over the OL. He had to learn something after all those years with Pittman working with him.

I don't understand why the universities don't word the buyouts so that if we're paying them, they don't have to serve a reasonable role for us until they get another job that we approve of. All these guys could be analyst, watching film and such like Butch did for Saban. If they screw up that job we could fire for cause (insubordination.)
We're going to pay Chaney more than a million bucks and Steele nearly a million when they could provide some level of contribution until they find something they feel more appropriate.
If not is there any way we could subcontract them to the highest bidder?

It is a stupid argument when it's a stupid "Pitfall". Go look at the dudes history calling his own plays before you just spout something off.

It's like telling a world famous chef "I don't want you to cook my meal, I want you to explain to the dishwasher how he should cook my meal."

Makes no sense, right?

So they are fired, but not fired? I don't see that working out so well.

Is it, or is it not factual that it’s harder for a HC to call plays and be an HC over just being an HC? When I say harder I mean more difficult for the individual.

Only makes sense for him to go. He seems like a good guy, hope he lands somewhere that's really good for him to finish out his career.

With the new coach bringing his own offensive system, there would be no real reason for Chaney to stay, except to learn it so he can go somewhere else later.
he is retiring and staying in Knoxville.
