Longsnapper? Please explain

The position has evolved along with the game. A team years ago could take a position player and make him a long snapper. Teams are more serious about special teams nowadays and you need a player trained at that. I see no problem giving 1 scholly out every few years to make sure there is no problem at this position. It would not surprise me if it eventually evolves into 2 different snappers. ( long and short snappers)

1 second left on the 20 yard line and Tennessee is down 2 points and must make the field goal to Win the SEC Championship and move on to the playoffs for shot at the National Championship.

The Vols come to the line, set, there's the snap and OH HELL NO, the ball goes over the head of the holder, game over and Tennessee goes home crying.

We NEVER, ever want to see a situation like that, NEVER!!!

Neither does buTch and punting and FG's many times are the difference in W's and L's.

What we want to see and hear in the above situation is....Vols to the line, perfect snap and hold...FG is GOOD and OMG the Vols have WON the SEC Championship and move on to the playoffs and a shot at the National Championship.

We ARE Tennessee and we expect to go to the SEC Championship game with a decent shot to Win it.

You do NOT take chances when the longsnapper is such an important position of NEED.

#BrickbyBrick...VFL...GBO!!!

This is my arm chair opinion on this.

Tennessee picked a NFL type long snapper that can get the ball back to the punter faster and more accurate.. Then Tennessee gets a very good punter that has a extra split second to get a perfect snapped ball.. He gets a kick off a tad quicker and more comfortable so he can do his craft.. Its all stacking up from beginning to end.. From the snap til the time the returner catches the ball.. How much did that split second snap grow until that point?

A couple scholarships used wisely IMO

Swain telling the story of this kid's journey to playing for the Vols. Sentiment doesn't win football games but he has worked his tail off and deserves to wear the power T.

If you ever watch a speed run of a video game, the runner does a lot of things that seem pointless or dumb for a few extra seconds.

Likewise, those few extra yards will make a difference

Agreed. These are small details that great football teams keep sured up.

Butch had a guy who was going to walk-on last year but was offered a scholarship by a different school and the kid took it. It is an investment. This kid will be in school 4 years. Longsnappers, punters and kickers usually stick around. And others in the thread have said it, ever seen what happens on a bad snap to the punter?

I trust Butch, but can someone explain in a well reasoned way the thought behind giving up a spot for a longsnapper? There's gotta be some good rationale behind this. Thanks and GBO! :hi:

All NFL teams have LS that are considered special team players...the majority do not also play center on the OL. Very important position.

This is such a ridiculous debate. A dedicated longsnapper is important enough that basically every NFL team has one. So, it is worth a roster spot in the NFL, but not a scholly in college? Seriously, people are making that argument? If it is so easy to teach, why can't NFL teams take a backup LB or TE or whatever and teach them to do it? It would save them a roster spot, which would be HUGE for an NFL team. They are already world-class athletes, they should be flexible enough.

I don't get the logic. We just signed a top 5 class WITH a Snapper. What's the big deal?

Most ppl rather have some of the kids we turned away than a LS. Most schools dont recruit a LS and its not like we have had a glaring snapping problem. In fact many of our LS's have been invited to NFL camps.
Im not too bent about it but I get the question

If he does not start four years it is waste.

I personally think we need another running back more than a long snapper. We have Hurd, Kamara, and Kelly plus one of the skinny blue shirts in case something calamitous happens. And, it always does.

Our long snappers have been fine over the years.

Here is a video - Swain posted of Riley snapping. Impressive : http://youtu.be/BPQX1qd751E

I hope watching this gives everyone an appreciation for the position, and the punters hands.

Here's Riley's page from Rubio Long Snapping. Chris Rubio is THE top long snapping instructor in the world.

Football

Notice his average snap time is .65 seconds. That's a 15 yd snap timed from the first movement he makes until the punter catches it. The average is over 12 snaps in various situations-snap and block left, block right, sprint to the ball and snap within 3 seconds and regular snaps (not just perfect conditions but actual game conditions where you have to think about more than snapping) That 0.65 sec is NFL speed and was a full year ago.

you might want to go do some research before making a statement like that. Tennessee never has but a lot of top schools do, it is once every 3-4 year thing but yeah they get recruited and they get scholarships.

Check this out, Ohio State signed a kid from Columbus to a scholarship this year, they already have LS on scholarship , they are willing to "Waste" a scholarship on this kid before he will even start because they think it is that important, but what does Meyers know

'I was already a family with Ohio State's specialists': Longsnapper Liam McCullough was a no-brainer for Urban Meyer: Buckeyes recruiting | cleveland.com

But in an age where every scholarship matters – Meyer has spoken at great lengths about how important depth is to success in college football – that's actually a sacrifice. Meyer didn't have a problem making it
.

10 longsnappers signed LOI today for D1 schools including LSU, Ohio St, Nebraska, among others. LS are never rated higher than 2 stars so in the list with other recruits they look less important than they really are. Lovingood's dad was chaplain for the Vols under Fulmer.

Bump from 19 months ago when Coach Butch Jones signed a 2-star long-snapper named Riley Lovingood and people wondered why.

Lovingood just made the outstanding over-the-shoulder catch of a punt--after snapping the ball--on Georgia's 2-yard line that set up the defensive go-ahead TD when Georgia's QB fumbled in their own endzone 2 plays later.

Huge play by Lovingood.
