Longsnapper? Please explain

Special teams have been pretty good under Jones and this staff. If they believe the position is worth a scholarship to upgrade then I'll trust their expertise over my skepticism.

I have several friends that played NAIA ball. They're my go to for information on what's it like to play for Duke, Kentucky, Kansas or UNC in basketball. I see where your coming from.

blue font would have been appropriate

I see where your (sic) coming from.

10 longsnappers signed LOI today for D1 schools including LSU, Ohio St, Nebraska, among others. LS are never rated higher than 2 stars so in the list with other recruits they look less important than they really are. Lovingood's dad was chaplain for the Vols under Fulmer.

Neyland made the blueprint, all Butch has to do is recruit and follow it and Nattys will stock the trophy case. And it will happen soon.

There was a succinct answer already, but the open tag for bolding text was missing. When you bold text you do it like this [ B ] bolded text [ / B ], but with no spaces. When the open tag is missing, [ B ], it doesn't recognize a command and simply puts the close tag on the screen, [ / B ].

Oh, I thought it meant Badass! :hi:

MOST programs take some unathletic white walk on and teach him to do it just fine.

Maybe some do. But it's a heck of a chance to take on something you're going to have to do 10 times a game.

Why wouldn't you burn a scholarship every 2-3 years on a snapper who can get it back to the holder/Punter a tenth or two faster? It could be the difference in a game.

Good chance he will also play center in the future.
No..there isn't. Log snappers are usually even more specilists than kickers. Kickers sometimes punt and vice versa. Long snappers snap. It is avery important job that only ever gets noticed if they fail.

That being said scholly well spent

I had to preserve this faux pas. I just don't know what to do with it.

In the celebration, Butch said something to the effect of Riley hoping to leave UT as the one player that nobody knew his name.

I didn't get it until I watched his highlight video. The kid has the fastest snap I've seen. Good pick up.

Let me see if I understand this. I've been watching Tennessee football for 40 years and I don't think I can remember ever seeing a bad snap on an extra point, field goal, or punt. I'm sure we've probably had a couple but just don't remember one. So, now we need to start giving scholarships to long snappers?

How many bad long snaps has there been in the 120 or so years of Tennessee football? 5? 10?

Like someone else said there were several schools that signed a long snapper today but that doesn't mean that schools don't have one on scholarship. Basically every school has at least one snapper on scholarship it is normally a RS-Jr or Sr. This is because of depth in the position-most schools have four on the team with the starter on scholy and the others are walkons. Tennessee was in a unique position with Giampapa being a RS-Sr next year and Butch decided to put an incoming freshman on scholy instead of betting on one of the walkons already on the team. Lovingood will likely start as a RS freshman in 2016 instead of waiting a few years. After 2015 the only LS currently on the roster that will be here is #10 Will Bradshaw who is also a QB. Danny Finch is no longer on the roster and Giampapa and Andrew Henry are both RS-Srs.
The difference now is that to get a quality snapper you need to put one on scholarship out of HS or hope one of your walkons impresses you enough to step in to the starting spot when needed. I guess Butch didnt think Bradshaw was ready to start while grooming the next walk on.
After all-Butch gets it.

Supposedly the kid is a master of what he does. It is a pretty big need. Doesn't look sexy but if we never hear his name again, then he will have earned his scholarship.

well said, now can we get back to our NSD celebration please! HA

I trust Butch, but can someone explain in a well reasoned way the thought behind giving up a spot for a longsnapper? There's gotta be some good rationale behind this. Thanks and GBO! :hi:

Did you ever think about how many plays in a game require a LongSnapper?

Have you ever seen what happens when a long snapper screws up?

Special teams are critical to Winning!

I would rather have a guy that cover as well. Lovingood is a lineman which is a liability in coverage. Long snappers must snap, protect, and cover. It's not just snapping. Tgats like saying qb's only throw. I would not count out a walkon as being our next snapper. We shall see.
