Longsnapper? Please explain

Long snapping is a learned skill not dependent on athletic ability with the exception of flexibility. It is an unglamorous position that most don't want to do. There are guys already on campus that could do it. The ratings for long snappers are silly. My son got in an NFL camp and was good enough to play in the SEC. He was an asset in coverage which is not often the case with snappers. Usually, it's easy to pick out the long snapper when they go down field.

Let 3 or 4 punts or a last minute field goal be blocked then the same ones that question the scholly of a LS would be raising H@LL about that the Butcher didnt recruit one as a 44 year fan there is about 10 percent of the fan base you cant please i dont consider them a VFL, a true fan stands behind the team, all the MAN has done has brought us from the worst shape in the programs history to becoming a top 10 team year in and year out, seen the same thing with Phil, i say the H@LL WITH ALL OF THEM SO CALLED VOL FANS, WE ARE TENNESSEE either you are with us or get the h@ll out of here and go to vandy.:banghead2:

i dont get giving a scholly, we have not had any punting problems with Butch. MOST programs take some unathletic white walk on and teach him to do it just fine.
In fact I think we have one in the nfl

Colleges recruit to that position now, Lovingood is the top ranked LS in the country, and he s from Tennessee. AU UGA and others were after him as well. Butch has seen the LS he has now and believes he needs an upgrade... Kid snaps almost a full half second faster than average which is 3 or 4 yards to an incoming rusher

:lolabove: What he said.. That in a nut shell is why he got a slot...

As with most of his posts, Beattie is over his head.

Lol....ok. I have hands on experience with the subject matter. I see no point in giving long snappers scholarships until they are seniors. My son trains snappers at an academy in Orlando and says it is now the trend to give snappers scholarships. Don't be stupid with your attacks on me.

Thank you.....it is a learned skill but it's a lot of work and repitition. The payoff is a starting position albeit an unglamorous one.

I'm not attacking. I'm stating facts. Your son, the one with actual hands on experience (though only at the FCS level) says it's the trend. Seems your son might know more than you do. Long story short, don't be stupid with yourself.

Well he actually played in several so called college football cathedrals. Lovingood will likely never be a benefit in coverage. And you never know how these kids will perform while the band is playing. I would rather have a guy already there to learn the position and the skill.

I guess when Alabama gave their last two LSs a scholly, it was just another in a series of bone headed mistakes Saban has made. Talk about a program that has went nowhere the past ten years.

Just because your son played in "college cathedrals" for his school to get a paycheck doesn't mean he played at an SEC level. Get real.

We don't know how Kamara or Khalil is going to play under pressure. Guess we've should've told them to walk on too.

I have several friends that played NAIA ball. They're my go to for information on what's it like to play for Duke, Kentucky, Kansas or UNC in basketball. I see where your coming from.

The exact opposite. But you pretending what goes on at the FCS level is even close to what goes on at the SEC level is humorously dumb.

What is your experience coach potato? The bottom line is you take a lesser talent, teach him the skill and he can do it. You can't do that with any other position. It's no different at the BCS level which is what they did for years.

I hope your son is making $500,000/year or more at that academy. Otherwise, he should have taken his learned skill to the NFL.

Or, wasn't he flexible enough?

nah. Just like other positions, I'd rather go ahead and get the best. If it works for Alabama, I bet it can work here. I'll take Nick Saban's approach over yours. Even if your son played FCS ball. Your son's professional stats speak for themselves. Yeah, he's better at long snapping than me, but there's a reason he was on the team that made a paycheck to play SEC teams and not on an SEC team. Oh, he's also obviously better at long snapping than you and even he admitted the current college football trend is signing long snappers. My biggest area of confusion is how you actually think you have any legs to stand on when even your son admitted your wrong.

I was thinking about this very thing recently. We have a segment on here, that if we went 12-1 next year, they would hammer Butch for losing the one and claim "I told you he wasn't the coach to take us all the way." They basically look for things to nitpick.

The best analogy I can think of is Randy Quaid's character in Major League. But, like that character, they also will be quick to jump on the bandwagon once it gets rolling. And, it is hard to think that it isn't going to be really rolling soon.
