I trust Butch, but can someone explain in a well reasoned way the thought behind giving up a spot for a longsnapper? There's gotta be some good rationale behind this. Thanks and GBO! :hi:

Let me think how important is is for a snapper to not snap to ball to a punter in the turf or over his head . hhmmmm

Colleges recruit to that position now, Lovingood is the top ranked LS in the country, and he s from Tennessee. AU UGA and others were after him as well. Butch has seen the LS he has now and believes he needs an upgrade... Kid snaps almost a full half second faster than average which is 3 or 4 yards to an incoming rusher

Supposedly the kid is a master of what he does. It is a pretty big need. Doesn't look sexy but if we never hear his name again, then he will have earned his scholarship.

This is why people shake their heads at giving out scholarships to a LS. If you can't get the ball back there reliably, you're in a heap of trouble.

A lot of top programs have been doing this. A top ls means fewer blocked field goals and punts. Both of which can turn a game around quickly

Having played the position a looooooooong time ago it can be summed up as this

When done correctly and consistently you wonder what the big deal is because it's automatic

When done erratically or poorly it causes heart attacks to coaches and needless loss of field position and everybody wonders what the hell is wrong with the idiot long snapper?'

Because "Press the kicking game. This is where the breaks are made"

This kid supposedly get the ball to the punter/placeholder very quickly...and that reduces the chances of blocked punts/kicks.

I can't check right now because I'm driving, but I would like to know how many other teams in the top 25 recruiting classes have a long snapper signed?

I have two sons that we're starting long snappers at the FCS level. The ratings don't mean crap. You take a guy already there, buried on the depth chart, encourage him to learn the skill as his only means of getting on the field. It's important and the goal is to remain anonymous.

Don't know about this year but OU offered the one we had that was supposed to walk on last year like the day before NSD.

That theory makes sense at FCS level where they only have 60 scholarships. In FBS where there are 85, you might as well recruit a snapper every 2-3 years.

There was a succinct answer already, but the open tag for bolding text was missing. When you bold text you do it like this [ B ] bolded text [ / B ], but with no spaces. When the open tag is missing, [ B ], it doesn't recognize a command and simply puts the close tag on the screen, [ / B ].

I don't understand. You admitted in your post that your experience is under completely different circumstances. Why would you think it applies to UT?

FCS /= FBS
