Pruitt keeps talking about turnovers being the cause of all the problems, which just isn't true. What he should be saying if we can't score more than a couple of touchdowns a game we are not going to beat anyone.

He thinks defense is going to win the games, but not with the offenses that can score 50 points a game, he is way to conservative thinking. He is always harping on not making mistakes, no interceptions, no fumbles, no missed blocks, no missed tackles, bla, bla.

Fact is all teams make mistakes, the difference is we don't have the ability to recover from mistakes because the offense can't move the ball, just look at the first down conversions. Last I checked we were ranked around #70 with a 23% conversion rate, terrible. If you can't make first downs you can't keep the offense on the field, and the defense will fold eventually.

Harrison Bailey can make all the difference in the world in making those first down. He is smart, can read defenses quickly, has a smooth release and just has more natural ability than any qb since Manning. Now can Pruitt recognize it and develop him quickly. So far he is treating him like a freshman and wasting his time with JG, just nuts.

5 NC rings on his finger have perhaps taught him that yes, his defense will win games - if the O just doesnt massively F it up. He is not going to be a lets score 70 points on them coach. He is going to focus on making sure the other team scores very little and then the O can add enough points to win. Again, see the Bubba/Dawgs game in 2017. Pretty much his strategy is off the Saban tree.

Not a college coach
At this point I'm for throwing 15 million at Bellichick and coaxing him into the college ranks to kick Saban's ass into retirement. Tom's gone and he should be ready for a change after this season.

OP, this post reminds me of literally hundreds around here over the past decade. So, I've got questionnaire for everyone to fill out, just out of curiosity. Please answer these questions with the best answer that you had AT THE TIME OF THE QUESTION, not with 20:20 hindsight ...

#1 Year 2008: Do you fire your struggling HoF coach? Y/N

#2 Year 2008: Since he was fired, who do you hire to replace? _______________

#3 Year 2009: Now that your AD just got exposed by a quitting 1st year coach, who replaces him? _________________

#4 Year 2011: Now that you've fired a pedigree hire. Who replaces him? _________________

#5 Year 2016: You've fired the failed trumpet player. Who replaces him? __________________

#6 Year 2020: You're riding low in hope of a diamond in the rough hire. What now? __________________

Please, anyone feel free to jump in. Discussing these answers are much less painful than the football we're watching.

My answers:
#1 Don't Do it! I lived thru the 70s. Success is not guaranteed.
#2 Kiffin was OK, if we get Monte. But the AD was derelict of duty with a $0.8m buyout!!!!
#3 Gary Patterson or Cutcliffe
#4 Peterson
#5 Pruitt or Venables. The AD and UT Admin brass chaos left no options.
#6 Ride hard with your new extensioned coach. Bad decision to extend last month w such a good class already coming.

Fulmer should have been fired in 2005.

When Kiffin bolted we should have made Kippy Brown the interim coach for 2010 while we took then time to do a real search. If we had done that none of the past 10 years of misery would have happened. Probably.

Kiffin was 7-6 with very bad losses to UCLA and Ole Miss. His poor coaching decisions at the end of the Bama game cost UT a chance for victory, settling for FG attempt rather than pursuing a TD or closer attempt. His moral victory coaching was obvious in the Florida game where the game plan was to beat the spread rather than attempt to win. And that is the best that you can say about Kiffin.

Off the field were the lies about firing employees, wrecked and abandoned cars on Northshore, mystery apartments, sending coeds to entertain recruit prospects in hotel rooms, knowingly and willfully committing NCAA violations, and God only knows what else. The fascination with such a mediocre coach who has crapped out of every golden opportunity handed to him is baffling to me.

If we hadn't turned the ball over 7 times in the last 6 quarters, everyone would be riding high on the vols right now.

Give our opponents credit. Most of the turnovers were knocked free, pressure on QB or good coverage. If Ga & Ky hadn’t outplayed “us” we wouldn’t have the 7 turnovers.

When you turn the ball over like we have the last two games, you are not going to beat anyone in the SEC. It really is that simple. JG needs to sit and lets work on preparing for next season. This year is a free pass as far as eligibility so get the young guns some experience. GO VOLS

Amen Brother!!! I think most here agree 100%. If Pruitt doesn’t move in this direction sooner than later, Fulmer needs to put a boot in Pruitt’s backside.

I've been watching, listening to, going to, and singing Rocky Top for a long time. Since Bill Battle was the coach. The last 15 years have been miserable and they aren't getting any better.

You know, I really didn't like Kiffin's attitude, his mannerisms, his ways. BUT, he and his crew could coach players. If you saw something going on in one game like arm tackles, it was fixed by the next week. He and his crew took Crompton and put him in the NFL.

Since Kiffin left Tennessee has had the most inept string of coaching staffs I have seen there in my lifetime. They can't seem to take good players and make them better. They can't seem to take mediocre players and make them good players. We are stuck year in and year out with a team that never gets any better, doesn't improve, a program that doesn't improve, just one that sometimes pulls a rabbit out of it's hat and wins one but then turns around and disappoints.

Watching the South Carolina game, it was pretty obvious our team wasn't ready to play in the SEC. Somehow, I'm not sure how, we won that game, But, our team wasn't on it's game. They did look a little better against Missouri and the first half of the Georgia game wasn't bad. Since halftime of the Georgia Game, Tennessee hasn't played a lick. Yeah, they scored 1 TD against Kentucky. Big dang whoopie.

Other schools get new coaches and they get name brand coaches, and they improve quickly and over time. Us, we get coaches that haven't been heard of yet and we do not improve. We get the "We'll have to go back and look at the tape" from the coach in the post game interview after the loss. Most of us are probably sitting there thinking, Tape Hell. Did you not see the 2 pick 6's and the fumble? In the Georgia game we turned the ball over 4 times out of 5 possessions in the 3rd quarter. That will do any football team in playing in the SEC.

We have had the same quarterback 5 years now. When does it become obvious we need a better player? Carson Newman probably has better.
How long do the powers that be expect the fans to stick with this crap show? Honestly, at this point, I'd just assume they COVID cancel the season so I don't waste time watching a game. I can remember beating Alabama at least every few years. Now, we have as much chance beating them as the Libertarian Party Candidate has of winning the Presidential race. We have become Vandy. The Doormats of the Conference. Why? I'm not sure why, but that's where UT is and has been over a decade now.
I was p!$$ed as late as yesterday evening but now I’m just like, whatever.
I’ve been in this vicious cycle long enough. It’s a painful flaw to be a Vol fan these days but I’ll watch every single second of the game on Saturday and right about kickoff I’ll convince myself that we have a shot. We’ll either show that we can play with the big boys and all will be good or we’ll get stomped and I’ll be p!$$ed again till about Wednesday. Then we’ll do it all over again in 2 weeks.
GBO!!

Op - how are the coaches everyone wanted during those searches doing these days ?
What an amazing argument....

Who gives a crap...they aint doing worse than 2 historic losses in 2 years..

This staff is not good. Maybe they can be but there are very very few data points indicating that will be the case.

How in the hell can you know that about HB? Seriously, he has one series and a scrimmage and the Manning comparisons come out?

Based on what little ive seen of HS footage...the current qb commit is the more talented of the two..if we land him...HB may not see much playing time in the future.

At this point I'm not sure any coach could turn JG into a good quarterback
One of the most frustrating things for a coach Is when a player plays so much better in practice than he does in games.
but the games count.
with some, like JG,, you just have to realize he’s a practice guy only.

I'm sorry, am I amongst the few that felt really, really lucky at the half of the GA game? As in how TF are we even ahead kinda question? I saw nothing on offense that gave much hope, except the score. Defense wasn't bad, there was that. But I had no illusions at halftime except to think maybe we can build on a gift? Well that didn't happen unfortunately.
