Here's the deal.

Big Kat did not transfer here without knowing this was going to happen.

Kevin Steele did not come here without knowledge that this was happening.

Austin Pope pulls his name out of the portal after dissing the team culture to come back to Pruitt? No. He knew this was happening.

So what is it that convinced them to come/stay here?

Logic says either Steele is HC this coming season or they have someone who all these people were willing to come here for already lined up.

He could be an interim however

Logic certainly says they aren’t firing Pruitt with cause

And

Forcing Fulmer to retire........just to make Steele the head coach.

They brought Steele in to have someone leading the ship until they hired someone......cause everyone knew this was happening.

So far.....for the first time in a very long time......they are doing things half way right.......other than possible NCAA crap (however that may have been out of their hands).

don’t know......this is Tennessee and they could certainly screw this up (worse than it is with everything that’s going on).

I'd say the simple fact that knowing Pruitt was leaving was enough to convince them. Going off the past, I'd say UT has no idea who they want to replace him, and will subsequently drag their feet even more.

Yup. Gives him a chance to show an incoming AD that he should be the guy and gives the administration a suitable interim with Tennessee ties while the AD search continues.

If this is the case (that you now have to find an AD before a coach) we are totally screwed.
If they don’t have anyone in mind, going with Steele for a year would be the best scenario. This would allow us to get our AD in place and have him talking to coaches throughout the entire season. That would give us the best chance of finding our coach.

As an Interim, I don’t have a problem with Steele. He knows it’s going to be rough next year especially if we lose a lot of players via transfer.

Lawyers have their work cut out for them in dealing with NCAA. I have no respect for that organization so I say be as aggressive as you want.

Picking the next AD would be the next step.

Why would Steele come for a month? What’s in it for him?
Being employed is better than not having a job. If Steele is the next coach that wouldn’t shock me because of the bad hires the AD has made over the years. It would really be a tough sell to fans to introduce Steele as Pruitt’s replacement.

As soon as Steele was hired, someone on Volnation offered a theory that Steele would be the DC under the new HC, and that was part of the arrangement when he was hired. I am ok with that.

What I read was that Fulmer was stepping down after his replacement was named so he could pick his own coach. Whether this is true or not that means nothing is off the table and the new AD will make the pick.....with the input of the usual suspects or they already have the new coach and AD and are just waiting for the big announcement. With all that being said it would not surprise me if Malzahn is the pick. There just seems like a lot of Auburn is headed this way.

Probably Steele. Sigh
Why Sigh? This is the step that should have been taken when Kiffin left. Instead of running out and making a panic hire, this gives Tennessee a chance to stablize the program with a coach who won't be given a 4 year $20mil deal that will have to be bought out if he fails quickly. I see this a lot like The Pittman deal at Arkansas. Here is a Tennessee guy who was just passed over for a HC job, who wants a chance to prove himself. If it works out, great, if not, there's time to figure it out and hire a coach next fall. The roster is in much better shape than when Dooley and Butch left. If Steele can continue to convince players to come back from the portal, the roster is otherwise in good shape so it could be a good make-or-break season for Steele.

What’s the logic of HT staying after Pruitt flew out to visit him???

I’m curious to know what “stabilizing the program” actually means

Steele will likely be the interim coach while a new AD is positioned and conducts their own coaching search. This shouldn't take very long, maybe a couple weeks.

Nothing against Steele, but my hope is Freeze is HC with Steele DC, then let the chips fall where they may.

If nothing else, I look forward to better grammer.
