Scout.com: Lofton is out 'indefinitely'

Lofton is out 'indefinitely'

By Randy Moore

Posted Jan 21, 2007

Tennessee’s three-game losing streak wasn’t all that snapped Saturday night at Thompson-Boling Arena. All-America guard Chris Lofton’s right ankle snapped, forcing him to sit out the final 18:11 of the Vols’ 64-61 defeat of South Carolina.

Because of significant swelling in the ankle, no x-rays will be taken until Monday morning. The 6-2 junior guard from Maysville, Ky., is listed as “out indefinitely.” He appears likely to miss Wednesday night’s game at Ole Miss. Whether he can be back in time to face the home-state Kentucky Wildcats Sunday, Jan. 28 in Lexington remains to be seen.
Head coach Bruce Pearl said he will prepare a game plan for Ole Miss that can function “with or without Chris Lofton,” adding: “I’ve got a lot to think about, as far as our rotations are concerned.”

Dear Chris,

Get better soon, but don't come back too soon. I've seen too many people come back from a similar injury and not be 100%

Our rotation now is:
Howell
Ramar
Jujuan
Bradshaw
Crews
Chism
Tabb
Childress
Passley

I think we either start now with Chism and Crews on the floor with Bradshaw at the 3, Jujuan at the 2, and Ramar/Howell at the 1 or we have Howell at the 1, Ramar/Jujuan at the 2, Ramar/Jujuan at the 3, Bradshaw at the 4, and Crews at the 5.

If that's so, that means Childress is going to have to SERIOUSLY step up and be able to give us 20+ quality minutes per game while Lofton is out. The only other option, really, is to start Tabb at the 2 in Lofton's place. Either way, we're starting 3 freshmen.

I just don't know about Tabb starting; I like his defense, but he's not a scorer, and he tends to rack up fouls quickly. Chism had a terrific game vs. South Carolina, and continuing Pearl's "play the hot hand" logic, why not let him and Crews start together?

well if u put chism and crews on the floor at the same time, both of them will probabely have to come out at the same time which leaves tenn with childress as the only big man out there.

I am actually glad that we're on the road this week. Obviously, our chances of winning without Lofton are much greater at home, but, it would be even worse to lose multiple winnable home games without him and then have him return with a slew of tough road games remaining. At least now, we will have up to 6 SEC home games left when we get him back (provided he is out up to 2 weeks, which is just my guess). Well, here's hoping everyone rallies around each other and beats Ole Miss, and Lofton returns to score 40 at Rupp!

I agree that they need to play together. Chism showed great fitness last night as he was on the court pretty much the last 6 minutes. Crews seems to get winded earlier; probably due to the energy that he gives. I like the idea of having Jordan, Ramar, Dane, Crews, and Chism. JuJuan makes to many stupid mistakes to be in there, but he is a scorer. We need Dane to drive/score more.

JuJuan Smith was so great coming off the bench last year, why not go back to that, if not now, then after Lofton returns?

because we dont have patterson in front of jajuan anymore. Who is better than him to take his spot?

The idea of Childress playing much really scares me. He is only good if we are playing the likes of Tennessee Tech or ETSU, which is the level of ball where he should be playing. Hopefully Pearl finds a rotation the doesn't include giving Childress any more minutes.

So true. Ryan's lack of speed and defense has been brutally exposed now that we're in conference play. You've got to be big and quick to play the post in the SEC.

i'm getting in on this late...so I apologize if this has already been covered... but, does anyone have stats on JaJuan's road games? Here lately, it seems like he can shoot at home but is awful on the road...

Lofton (eventually), Ramar, Bradshaw, Chism, Crews. I realize, as the TV announcers pointed out last night, that it would force Chism to learn two positions as a freshman, but I think we should start every game with the best lineup we can put out there.

All I know is my ankle is still hurting from watching all those replays of Loften stepping on that guy's foot.

wow if he is hurt bad i will cry... we can still knock down the three without him just not as proliphicly, we will have to rely on good post play and a step up in the games of our wings and points... i guess the best thing to do right now is pray and i am prayin hard... a benifit of this could be him stickin around awhile longer instead of goin to the nba tho we will be alot better next year if he is still around

In addition to the scoring that he won't be doing while he is out, I will also miss Lofton's hustle on defense. He seems to come up with some good defensive turnovers just based on his hustle.

I know Chris being hurt is awful, but take a look at the brite sight for a sec.

1. IF (and it's a big if) we win w/o Chris if it's only for a few games, it will be huge for the team. They will really come together, and rely on eachother.
2. Chism and Crews will play their normal positions. Crews at PF and Chism at C make for a more complete lineup sizewise rather than 4 guards.
3. This lineup will be similar to next year's. Next year- Ramar pg, Chris sg, JaJuan sg/sm, Crews sf/pf, Chism pf/c.
