As far as losing the "hornets nest" enviroment, I think it's absolutly the case. However, I do think some of it is natural. 2021 will probably never be topped. It had everything lining up. Everyone was desperate to be in an enviroment like that after dealing with covid. It was our first really good team in, what, 16 years? You can't replicate the climb. I would kind of relate it to beating Alabama in 2022. Years of desire went into making that crowd so crazy. I don't care if we win five national titles or build a 16000 seat stadium, it won't be able to top Gilbert's HR for an isolated electric moment. I didn't have expectations at that point, only excitement to be winning again.

Or Max Ferguson walkoff against the Hogs.... or Evan Russell's third home run against Vandy.... or the dingerfest against LSU in supers.

2021 certainly had it's memorable moments.

I've been very lucky to be at a lot of great UT sporting events in my life in a lot of sports. Just about everything from the late 80s til now in Knoxville, and several on the road.

Nothing comes close to that Gilbert's grand slam. Nothing.

And you nailed the phrasing..."electric moment". I don't know if it lasted for 15 seconds or 15 minutes, but I remember seeing the ball fly and my mind absolutely going into some lizard brain space where everyone just yelled and bounced around inside LNS. Didn't feel real.

The whole athletic department had been pushed around for going on more than 10 years. We finally had a team with enough grit to push back... and they went into the 9th down to Wright State. Felt awful. Felt like the previous 10 years... until Gilbert vaporized that ball.

I was so pissed off, I drunkenly fell asleep. Woke up just in time to see the bat flip king throw that hoe down the first base line. I’ve never woken up from a drunk slumber so quickly

OTOH, I don’t miss worrying about Tennessee not making it to Hoover, and I liked going with a couple of friends and one of my kids to Omaha last year.

I got in for $175/seat. $350 for the season was a steal even with the 4 hour drive from AL every other weekend. Now I’m shelling out $2500 for the same 2 tickets plus the drive/hotel/food all weekend.

That’s a real commitment you have with the travel time and those costs.

Give them seats or give them drink rails to lean on. Instead...they gave them what looks like surplus theme park ride-queue railing. Nothing to sit on, nothing to so much as set a drink or a hot dog on for 3-4 hours. Don't really care who's idea it was, its a flop. Needs to be fixed asap.
