While I acknowledge that many of these conference titles were won versus questionable competition in turn of the 20th century regional conferences... It's not like South Carolina didn't spend nearly half a century in the SIAA and Southern Conferences.

YES and sad but true....ALSO PITT has an NC!

Technically, I could include a few more teams with top level titles...

Sewanee had 4 SIAA titles
Chicago had 7 Big Ten titles
Colorado Mines picked up a few before, as did Washington & Lee...

Long Beach State had at least a few Big West titles, as did Cal State Fullerton before they dropped football.

Heck, the MVC was a top flight conference until about 1982... throw some titles in for Drake, Creighton, Washington University of Missouri, Detroit, and Wichita.

Vandy was big dog back in the day. WAY back

Once upon a time the University of Tennessee grew tired of constant beatdowns by their big rival and they went out and hired a big name coach.

That rival was Vanderbilt and that coach was General Bob Neyland.

And outside of a 10-2 season in 1984, there was about zero chance of an ACC or SEC title in that period. For the record, that's the season Florida went 5-0-1 and vacated the title due to violations... and Maryland went 5-0 in the ACC.

South Carolina's losses were to Navy and Oklahoma State.

I was surprised to see that Pitt had only one conference title also....

Quick fact check on cfbdatawarehouse.com shows that Pitt joined the Big East in 1991 and was independent for decades prior to that.... I was surprised to see how many National titles the had won. Most of them WAY back in the day, but titles nonetheless.... Bama would claim each & every one of 'em and never let anybody forget about it either....

You know who else has a bunch of quasi-National Titles? Michigan State! I consider myself a semi-knowledgable football fan, but I would not have guessed that one.

Ah... I was surprised at Pitt as well when I just read that list...
