I recall seeing lots of teams especially in the SEC last year that had their linemen get behind their RB and push them forward especially against us, yet i don't recall seeing our line do the same very much. i know we were way undersized on Defense but still, it would frustrated me to see teams do this when we had the runnning back stopped but not completely down and they would pushing him forward from behind for a first down alot especially on 3rd downs. i wonder if our coaches are teaching the linemen this technique this year??

Its called illegal assistance, and there was a lot of it last year. Ref's just haven't been calling it lately.

I notced that too! Seems like it was Ala. more than anyone else. I kept waiting for a flag and started thinking that maybe the rules had been changed.

If you knew it was illegal, why were you asking if our coaches were teaching our lineman to use the technique?

I could be wrong, but I believe It's not illegal unless a lineman is holding his own runningback up or pulling him along.

Holding is illegal. . . But i did it every game when i played, i was told to, i told my lineman to hold when i coached. I know college does the same thing.

From the 2009 - 2010 Rulebook, doubt it changed for 2010 - 2011 or 2011 - 2012

Interfering for or Helping the Ball Carrier or Passer
ARTICLE 2. a. The ball carrier or passer may use his hand or arm to ward off or push opponents.
b. The ball carrier shall not grasp a teammate; and no other player of his team shall grasp, pull, push, lift or charge into him to assist him in forward progress.
c. Teammates of the ball carrier or passer may interfere for him by blocking but shall not use interlocked interference by grasping or encircling one another in any manner while contacting an opponent.
PENALTY—Five yards [S44].

Good find; I stand corrected. So maybe it's permissible as long as they're pushing the pile, and not obviously and directly pushing the ball carrier?

Has anyone ever seen this called? Don't bring this up to ND fans they're still heart broken from that Bush push against USC

The way I read it, its illegal anyway you do it if you aren't legally blocking an opponent, which is fairly strict definition in itself. Ref's don't call it though, so its largely irrelevant.
