JRM and DKJr are the best we have. McDowell has shown flashes in games. Sapp could have helped a ton this yr as well. But im disappointed that our other LBs haven't developed into much:
Bates- this is his 3rd yr
Elliot Berry- 3rd yr
Bryant- 3rd yr
Bynum- 4th yr
Jakob- came in as LB 3rd yr

Is Austin Smith hurt? Capable of playing LB?

Are our guys that bad at learning the plays and understanding ( Jumpers knowledge). Is it a coaching issue? I always look to a coach on why after several yrs the players still doesn't appear developed.

Players max out at a certain point. Potential is not unlimited. You can't keep coaching a kid beyond his abilities. I know Jumper is a big liability but obviously he is the only one that can get it done from a playcalling standpoint. Im sure they wish they had a better option too.

Austin Smith Moved to DE but he could always move back for depth I would think.

The only reason he plays is because he understands the defense. He cant play very well but he does get it. So theres that.

I would like to see them plug and play but I know that wont happen ever.

Who would have thought a couple years ago that we would have 4 junior and 1 senior back up linebackers. That's pretty insane depth. A bunch of those guys are 4 stars too. I know they're down the depth chart, but a couple years ago, these injuries would have been impossible.

I wonder if Kirkland can get redshirt this year from injury. It was only in the second game. That would make him the scariest redshirt sophomore next year.

We can't afford to lose Kirkland for the season. No way he redshirts unless he is a medical redshirt because he can't come back at all. I don't think his injury is suspected to be that severe.

If our season goes south, I agree with you. Sit him the rest of the year the way they did Josh Smith a couple years ago. But if we are leading the east chase after these 4 games let him play and help us get to ATL and see what a 1 game scenario with Bama brings.

It also has to do with player development or lack there of. Its unnerving that we have as many LBs as we do and only Colten Jumper can get any significant playing time.

Or it could be that the players behind him simply don't want to put in the time to get in the field. Lots of shots being taken at the coaches or Jumper but very few talking about those big time 4*'s choosing to hang out on the sidelines in a clean jersey

Bates hasn't been immune to the "bust" label.

It's a recruiting issue. A couple of busts and a project has put Butch in this situation

Definitely a possibility. If their attitude is the problem they dont need to be on the team in the first place. The coaches recruited/evaluated these players and Butch has repeatedly said what type of guys he wants on the team.

Coaches are paid a lot of money to develop players mentally and physically to play at an elite level.

It does amaze me that LB has been such a problem position. It seemed like we recruited well there the past few years, but other than DKJr. none have really stood out or developed into what we hoped. It sucks that the 1 LB we could not afford to lose gets hurt.

Then get rid of them-- there shouldn't be a free scholly/Education... you have to earn it just like everything else in life... taking up space on the sidelines is BS to me with this amount of talent. There are a few linemen I think are taking this route as well...
