1985 was not pretty but it got the job done......Would Butch be on the hot seat with the same finishes? In today's instant gratification society what would opinions be if...

we tied UCLA, Had a close call with Wake Forest, Lost to Florida, Squeaked by Alabama, Tied GA Tech... and beat UK, Memphis, Vandy, Rutgers and Auburn

And still be SEC champs? I'll take it every day of the week.

Auburn was ranked #1 when they came to Knoxville, and had arguably the greatest athlete of all time. We blew them out. We lost our starting QB in the Alabama game to a cheap shot by Cornelius Bennett. The tie with GT was because Majors didn't trust Dickey to run the offense.

I have that bottle as well! :good!:

I think you need to look beyond the numbers. That was a great season. Tony Robinson!! I remember those games like yesterday.
That was a "quality" (if there is such a thing) tie against UCLA albeit a disappointment. We led 26-10 in the 4th quarter before UCLA scored two late TDs and converted both 2 pt conversions. Then we turned around and destroyed #1 ranked Bo Jackson led Auburn which led to the Tennessee Waltz SI cover. Wake was simply a let down after that big win. The win at Bama was a good one as well. The G Tech tie was disappointing but they were a good team that year if I remember correctly.
And of course to have it culminate in an SEC Championship, yes I think folks would erect statues of Butch if he had seasons like that with any consistency.

Was it a cheap shot? I don't remember that being the case. Robinson was scrambling and planted his foot and I remember his knee getting smashed and bent in the opposite direction. Still one of the more gruesome injuries I recall. He went low but I don't remember it being deemed a cheap shot. Of course these days I'm happy just to remember my own name, so... :hi:

It wasn't flagged, but it was obvious he went for the knee.

No social media back in those days. The whiners only had themselves to complain to.

It is truly amazing how much social media has amped up the pressure. People have always said the sorts of things about sports and coaches that people on social media say. Now it can be broadcast to millions of people and the mainstream media acts as an amplifier because they think they have to cover what occurs on social media sites.

If they hadn't been cheating to gain an advantage or been punished with scholarship limitations, Florida wouldn't have been as good. Plus TN would have been more motivated if Florida was eligible for the SEC championship or if it was allowed to be on TV.

What were they doing?

The question is not applicable. One of the schools best known athletes from the best known volunteer family wins a national championship at Pitt and decides to take the coaching job at UT. Doesn't get any better than that. He could do no wrong at that moment. Would have brought a title to the Vols earlier than 98 if his health had been stable.

I'll gladly take squeaking by Alabama right now.

Went to every home game that year. Sold cokes just so I could get in. Even now some of my favorite memories were from that season

Was an AWESOME season! I was 15 and living in New Orleans. I remember watching every game. Still have that UT-Auburn game on VHS tape somewhere. It's probably all worn out after the number of times I watched and re-watched that game.

Best part of that year was going to the Sugar Bowl. Our shotgun house in Uptown faced the Winn Dixie parking lot. My Mom let my brother and I put this huge "GO BIG ORANGE" banner on the side of our house for weeks leading up to the game. Then he and I went to the game. What a game! 35-7 blasting of Jimmy Johnson's Miami Hurricanes. Vinny Testaverde, Michael Irvin... all in tears after that one. I think I literally floated home from the Superdome that night. Still have my "Vinny Who" button I wore to the game!

GREAT MEMORIES!!

Maybe. Maybe not. We'll never know. IMO 1990 was a championship caliber team, but we lost to a really bad Alabama team and at home to Notre Dame. Plus we had 2 ties.

I wasn't even born yet and know very little about the '85 season, besides the fact that we were SEC Champs and beat the crap out of Miami in the Sugar Bowl, so I've got a question. Would we have been the national champions if we hadn't lost to UF?

Radio call in shows

Gay Street Quarterbacks

Does anyone remember back in the 70's after the games on one of the AM stations that they would have a program where people would call in just to ask for a score from around the country?

I mean we had no way of knowing any scores, there was no ESPN, no internet.

So you would just call up and the host would pick up the phone live on the air and he would ask you which score you wanted to hear and you would say like "Could I get the score for the Michigan State game?" and he would look it up and tell you the score and if it was in progress or a final.
