From Knoxville Magazine article linked down the board:

In spite of the discipline issues that have plagued UT's players over the years, Coach Kiffin deserves another applause for his team ending the school year with the highest semester GPA in over five years.

And also this:
"There was a lot of running at 5am when I first arrived for being late and missing curfews," Lane said. "We've seen that drop off a lot. You can't just show up on Saturday and be accountable."

if CLK can get these kids motivated, going to class and win some games, maybe one day we'll talk about him like we do Gen Neyland and Johnny Majors.

This is really great stuff to hear. Getting 19 and 20 year old kids focused and doing good in class and making curfew should show his focus on discipline. This can only lead over to the football field sooner or later. With more focus on less penalties and making the smart decisions during the game.

This is POSITIVE Vol talk, no way it will be on ESPN...now if the team has the lowest GPA in over five years, then it would make ESPN.

Exactly, They don't want to tarnish the bad boy image of CLK....That would ruin ratings.

Sounds just like ESPN has painted Kiffin - a guy that doen't know what hes doing, and that has no control over his program - Yeah right.

This is more telling then a few stray comments to the media. This shows that he can motivate his players. Good news! :)

Exactly. They don't want people thinking Kiffin is actually helping the kids or university in any way.

I would still rank Coach Fulmer ahead of Coach Majors, he did win a NC for us. Coach Majors was a great coach and did a did a good job but CPF did a really good job until the last few years. JMO

Does anybody here know the concept of "newsworthiness" or "news value". Why the hell would ESPN report this?

Nope...it won't make national news.

Seems like the only positive info on the news is Tebow doing the stuff he does.

Some of the lesser coaches like; Reaked, Yourbane, Stayban, coachie cheesic and Preteenoe might really have problems if Coach Kiffin continues to demonstrate how players are really supposed to behave. All this curfew respect, social and financial responsibility and class attendance action is really setting a bad example for all those bammer bubbas, limberlipped loose in the loafers gators, intellectualy compromised stumpydogs, lower alabama plains-bubbas and mudhole raiseyourbacks.

As good of a story as that would be to show, it won't be shown because its positive

This wouldn't even make ESPN if they did like us, it simply doesn't warrant mention because it's positive.

ESPN has turned into the news, in that when it's not reporting scores, it enjoys posting the bad, not the good.

Sorry #10 Ainge, noticed your post right after I posted. A little redundant, but drives the point home

I know I am probably in the minority on here and to a certain extent I could see where everyone would think that ESPN hates us but I don't think its just us they are reporting negitive things about...It seems like its every day but its not...But if they're wanting to report something they feel is going to get people to watch the show they are going to report it

regardless of whether it makes ESPN or even KNS, I applaud Kiffin and the Athletic Dept staff for staying on top of these kids. However, what this story also points out is that this semester's GPA was the same as it was in 2003-2004, approximately the same time that UT was picking up the pace in its descent as a program. I think that this indicates a strong correlation between discipline on the field, in the weight room, and in the classroom. Stars might be able to succeed on the field without any discipline in the classroom, but a team as a whole cannot. That is, unless you're Miami circa 1985.

How many months have gone by since the start of 5am runs, and we've never heard this until now?

Where's the Sports Source, KNS, Sports Animal, etc. been all this time?

Did they never think to look at these things, or knew about them and haven't reported them?

Next thing you know, Bill Landry of the Heartland Series is going to get the drop on them. Watch and see - somewhere amongst a butter churning episode, they'll mention that Scroggins has committed.

Knoxville Magazine is produced by the News-Sentinel, though is sold separately. The KNS writers were involved in the story's research, but did not write it.
