Let's say we go 10-3...

Well, you could have tied teams in the west and east with the tie-breaking teams going to the SEC championship game. If the championship game is lopsided, wouldn't the losing team rank lower than the 2 other team that missed out on the championship game? So, TN finishing 10-3, may not be a lock for the Citrus? What if the West had a 3-way tie?

Yeah, that's a possibility too. And conceivably, you could have the SEC Champ and one of its co-West leaders both in the playoffs!

Or the SEC Champ (Auburn here) in the Playoffs, the co-West leader in the Sugar, and Tennessee in the Fiesta or Peach as a Committee selectee, or in the Citrus if not selected for any of those at-large.

It gets complicated. I'm glad I'm not on that committee, heh. Too much work around the holidays. :)

Seems like drinking on the weekends cause these kind of prediction. Last season UT won 6 regular games. ⑩ would be a big jump.

Bowls are about $. Bowls talk. They all know UT traveled very well and spent lots of money last year for the Gator/Taxslayer Bowl. IF we go 11-2 or 10-3 hell even 9-4 with a loss in the SEC title game we will get a very good bowl. Citrus, Outback I can't keep up with what's what and who's who and where, but if we get more than 8 wins we will get a bigger bowl because of $ we will bring to that bowl as a fan base.

lose to Alabama, Missouri, and lose to Auburn in the SEC Title game. Do we go to one of the big bowl games (non Playoff game of course)?

difficult to say. without knowing the records of everyone else around the country... 3 losses could be a lot to overcome.

But it is nice to fantasize. been a long time since we did that..

going 6-3 in SEC would help start turning around the last 7 yeas of SEC play. Long way to get back to even in SEC play since we are 17-39 in last 7 years.

Definitely be a big bowl game if we do that. In 2009 we went 7-5 and still got a big bowl game. They know UT travels well and has a huge fanbase so the biggest one that can take us, will.

If this happens UT better be ready to shell out for Butch and staff because other schools will come calling quickly.

9-3 will probably get Tennessee the Citrus or Outback Bowl while a 10-2 record could very well get Tennessee the Sugar,Orange or Cotton Bowls in my opinion.

Orange and Cotton are part of the playoffs this coming year. And I don't think 10-3 (10-2 plus a loss to Auburn, the scenario defined by the OP) will get any team into the playoffs.

But the Sugar Bowl, or an at-large bid to the Peach or Fiesta, would certainly be possibilities. Citrus would be the fall-back position.

Butch isn't going anywhere. He's a VFL now. He will retire from this job in about 2040, destined for the College Football Hall of Fame.

His assistant coaches will spread out over the college landscape like dandelion seeds, not all at once but one or two at a time, some becoming head coaches in their own right. Butch will bring in and develop new coaches to replace them. He will rule over a dynasty, and have a coaching tree to rival anyone's.

Well, if that doesn't get you pumped up and proud of the program. . . I feel like this could be the start of Jones' memoir. You got that in the works?

Reminds me! Where are all the "best staff in America" wisecracks and putdowns? Used to be every other post at least and long threads aplenty. Went the way of the dodo bird I guess? :gone:

However, what if we beat Auburn in Atlanta? Would that eliminate the SEC from the playoffs entirely?

Could. If the other conference winners had 1 (quality) loss and there were no better than a two-loss SEC team. If Auburn's only loss was in the SEC championship game, then no.
