Let's just pump the brakes

Maybe if the brakes had been pumped before the season, there wouldn't be as much of a meltdown.

Even if I had expected this team to go 6-6 before the season, after I saw them give away two wins, I would still be pissed because they should have exceeded my expectations.

This team could wind up with 7 regular season wins. A 7 win team is right about where many expected. In some weird way, we played much better than I expected in the OK game and FL looks like they have hired a dynamic new coach who has them rolling.

If this team ends up with 7 regular season wins, Butch is gonna be fine and the program is not that far off-track.

As I recall, Butch was really our only choice after Dooley. The biggest mistake was passing on Sumlim. At any rate, I don't know if anyone wants this job.

First of all, settling for 7 wins is not being a true fan. Secondly, it may be mathematically possible to win 7 games, but I dont see some miraculous turnaround happening after last night.

Last night reminded me of the 2011 Kentucky game. They just looked like a team that didnt care.

They are following the path their coach has made for them. He has them believing they cant win.

After the last loss, it was 8. After the next one, you'll say 6...

See Michigan, Florida, etc.

I don't know how "good" Butch is. He certainly doesn't appear to be as good as McElwain or Harbaugh. But neither is Mark Rict. There is a chance, we win 7 regular season games and a bowl game. That would be 8 wins. I don't think that proves Butch is bad. I don't think his job is jeopardized with an 8 win season.

What does this team look like after getting drubbed by Bama? If they are playing hard, Butch is doing something right (not everything).

Heck, McElwain just needs one apparently! UF is much younger than us across the board. They were predicted to finish below us and UGA. Now, they're sitting at 5-0 (3-0 SEC), just blew away the #3 team in the country, pulled out a win vs a huge rival (us) last week, and look like they are also gonna run the East this year out of nowhere. Oh, and Grier is a freshman to boot. There is no process. If you are good enough as a coach, you can literally win at any time and he's proving that right now. We don't have that with Butch.

Yes. These are facts. Tired of listening to youth, depth, process, and oh yea maturation BS!

Jones has already proven to me that he cannot win at this level. Even if we found a way to beat Georgia next week, I still wouldn't be convinced. He's not a consistent winner and never will be in the SEC.

This post is so dumb it hurts. We're going to get shelled the next two games, and if UK beats Auburn, they're most likely 5-2, feeling themselves, and looking to get bowl eligible, and also looking for payback for the drubbing we handed them last year. We start 2-5 and you expect us to finish 4-0? There's no new wrinkle to add, everyone and their mother has us figured out. If we can't win in the trenches consistently we can't move the football.

But by far the most ridiculous thing about that post is the thought that no one would want to coach here. No, we just need to quit hiring bargain bin bull**** and quit acting like every good coach is going to Kiffin us.

Certain parts of this fan base make me sick with the way they rationalize records and potential records and not facing the facts that we all see on the field. Quotes from VolNation over the past 8 months....

1. Only see two losses on this schedule...

2. Well, we out talent FL, so 9-3 is where we should end up.

3. You all do realize 8-4 is where we all said we would probably be in the pre-season

4. Wow, 7-5 is still possible everyone. That is an improvement.

What is next?

5. Well, 6-6 gets us a bowl and extra practices, so that will be good.

6. Well, 5-7 is still in our sights, and coach says we are still young, and next year will be a good year. Coach gets it. And at least we maintain our record of never losing 8 games.

7. Well, we knew eventually we would lose 8 games, so it is over, and now CBJ can build the foundation with more experienced players.

Geez, will everyone just take a look at the 3 losses and understand that this coaching staff is shell shocked and not capable of coaching at this level. After 3 years of hearing about the youth, seems we should be a bit older now....

Ladies and gentlemen, this is called settling. This is why we are in the predicament we're in. Just because we can get 7 wins doesn't mean that's what we should have. We SHOULD be 5-0. And the sad part is that if we do get to a bowl game, people will be happy. And then next year there will be more hype to finally break through. GOOD COACHES DON'T NEED 4 YEARS TO WIN.
Yep

This! A million times this. I am so sick of the excuses. Good coaches just win.

Yep, it's been a sliding scale here for a long time. People go nuts because I post polls asking about what kind of record would be considered a "success" at the beginning of the season, but this is exactly why I have to do it.

No one, not national experts, not posters here, was saying 7-5 would be a good record for us this season at the outset. But now, it's just stated as fact that was what was always said. This is why we keep signing losers to huge contract extensions.

With the talent this team has, if CBJ is let go there will be lots of interest in this job.

Which is like getting a turd in your stocking

Don't think we'll have to sweat that. If...and it's a big if....we do reach 6 wins, the destination will more likely be Shreveport or Birmingham not Memphis.

"Give it two days, you'll post a thread about the Vols winning the East." 10/3/15

Did this team have enough talent to win the East? They had 2 TD leads over Florida and Oklahoma late in the game, so yes they did

Is this team bad enough to lose 8 games for the first time in school history? Sadly the answer is again yes. They laid down and gave up against an Arkansas team that lost to Toledo. They were reeling from their meltdown the week before and OT loss -- but their coach knew they could beat us and instilled that in his players even after falling behind 14-0 the first two times we touched the ball. His confidence rubbed off and he was proven right

Our coach does not have confidence in his players. He proves that every time he opens his mouth and tells us how many players are getting on an airplane for the first time. "We are just too young to understand how to win yet, our players have not grasped our unfaliable system and executing the simple plays we are calling for them, etc.".

Show some confidence in your team, plan around our weaknesses instead of playing right into them, and try to actually design a game plan to take advantage of the other teams weakness instead of following your system and process --- do those things and maybe just maybe we can turn the season around and finish with just a mildly upset fan base

Most reasonable people were hoping for significant improvement this year accompanying winning a game or two we shouldn't (beating a ranked team or two), and looked to 2016 to be when we could actually be considered true contenders for the East. EX: 8-4 record beating BGSU, WC, FL, ARK, UK, SC, North Texas, and Vandy. This was not asking for too much given our talent and considering AT LEAST 5 of those teams listed are not good football teams.

Regardless of what you predicted, no one wanted to be in the same old situation of having to basically win out the last half of our schedule just to reach a bowl. Getting to 7 wins is not even close to a given now, and that doesn't reflect well on our coaches. Everyone in the nation can see this except some of the most positive fans here.
