Let's just be honest for a minute...

Truth is, with the economic situation at UT there may be no hot seat in basketball.
Though my gut tells me we'll be struggling on the bubble again next season, Martin's future at TN will coincide with Butch's success at Neyland.
If Butch builds a contender and gets to some lucrative bowls he'll fill the money bags and make the transition to a big name hire in basketball possible.
Martin will be here as long as he keeps 15k in the seats and probably to the end of his contract even if he doesn't.

You are so right, if Coach Pearl had never been here we would not know what winning and NCAA tournament appearances felt like. The arguments you guys make really don't deserve a response, it is easy to see a winner in a pool of losers. Without pearl, CM looks like a good coach.
This is all coming from a bunch of people that couldn't care less about watching the sport of basketball. They only tune in (to possibly 1/3 of the games, at that) because the team has "Tennessee" on their jerseys and there's no football on TV. They don't understand the game of basketball beyond their optimist club playing days, and therefore the extent of their analysis is comparing the program to football and trying to draw parallels between this coaching staff and Dooley. That's the best argument they can muster. If Bruce Pearl had never been the coach here, they wouldn't care what Cuonzo had been doing during his time here. They jumped on the bandwagon after they saw what a successful TN bball team looks like, and now they're jumping off because we're suddenly 'just like Dooley's 5-7 football teams'. Irrational and ignorant.

I have been a Cuonzo supporter up until tonight. He didn't care about this game and he showed it in the way he prepared his team and the decisions he made during the game. If the team is wearing Tennessee Volunteers on the uniform and there is a scoreboard, the coach and the team should have enough pride to "give their all for Tennessee."

Once a loser always a loser. This is Cuonzo's answer to Dooley at Kentucky last year.

Wow, just wow...

I guess Kentucky is looking for a coach after the play of their team in the NIT!

Fans care when we lose. Bandwagon fans do not.

Fans also show up no matter what, not just to complain after an ugly loss and demand the coach to be fired. Some of us on here were called stupid for not throwing in the towel at 11-10, but lo and behold, they were suddenly in the NCAA talk. And where were most of these posters? Nowhere. Talk about bandwagon.

guys, stop with the over dramatic nonsense. No amount of ridiculous message board rants is going to get zo fired before next season is finished. It is as simple as this: Martin will be back next year with the tools to be a decently seeded ncaa tourney team. Let's judge him at this time next year. Ftr, i think we are going to break faces next year, and all you idiots clamoring about martin being the worst coach in history can stfu.

agree!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, I'm excited about next season already, but like you not very optimistic. Our weaknesses that we have had the last 2 years can not be fixed with the addition of Maymom and Hubbs, IMO. Sure we will win some games, but I to see us still struggling on the road due to lack of focus, motivation, etc... PG issues will still be the same. Unable to pass to the post will still be the same with the same guards we already have. We will continue to see zone defenses until we can show that we can shoot our way out of them. SEC will be stronger next season. So with all that, I think we flirt with the bubble once again.

That being said, we stumble in Dec. again next year, and the attendance will be gone. You can see that in this year's NIT attendance vs. last years. If he stumbles next year, he may still get the 4th, but I expect that to be a rebuilding year with 3 to 4 of your starters leaving. That 4th year attendance will be the nail in the coffin. Season tickets is what got the attendance as high as it was this year. That will steadily decline and drop off big time if we miss next year.

So I guess coach Cal is getting fired because his guys, who on paper were more talented then UT, laid an egg on Tuesday. Its sad, but you have a situation where you just don't care about playing anymore especially if you are not in the NCAA. That's why these small schools do really well in the NIT because it is generally all they have to play for.

The Mercer performance was predictable. After not getting NCAA bid they just packed it in. Was obvious all night long.

I agree.
I'll add, I do realize that Martin is a young, inexperienced developing coach. But, he has not shown the ability or desire(not sure which it is) to diversify on either end of the court.
That's why he has trouble making adjustments during game time.

I believe half our problem is trae, I hate to find a scapegoat but his inconsistency at the pg position really hurts us. I'm not saying he's gotta go for 20 and 8 every night but when he has 2 points and is throwing the ball out of bounds we are screwed. We have got to recruit a true pg.

Well, not sure about that. He did switch to trying speed the game up from a walk it up and slow the game down as much as possible. I think this was done way too late in the season. I have a hard time understanding why he didn't figure this out in Europe. But other than that, no he hasn't. There seems to be no game planning for different teams. Same plan for all. Same Stokes high ball screen for offense.

Got to love the simpleton sheep.

Comparing a coach who won the NCAA tourney last year with one that has never even taken a team to the NCAA tourney is the definition of absurdity

Or maybe it's the simpleton sheep who think that losing a meaningless NIT game that the team obviously had no motivation for is the end of the world.

Idiotic. I think winning it all the previous year buys you a smidgen of grace. Plus Cal went and got commit from #1 PF the next day. Tell me what else UT had to play for?

Guys, it was a friggin NIT game in front of 4K fans. Yeah, yeah, I hear all the "they should give their all...they are supposed to compete" rah rah crap, but it is what it is. If this game was SO important, why didn't more fans show up? It doesn't change anything. We should be a better team next year even if Maymon can't come back. Next year will tell the tale on if CCM can get it done. No excuses.

The people who say it was just an NIT game can take their loser attitude and go play for Cuonzo next year. He is getting paid $2 million a year to motivate this team for all games and on that point he has failed miserably. He is suppose to be a defensive first coach but his team sucks at defense.

I get your point, but he makes less than that. Did not get a raise after last year, thus still making $1.3 million, one of the lowest paid coaches in the SEC, yet has done better than most his two years here. Makes sense...
