Let's be honest

A lot more goes into wins and losses than simply coaching ability in year one. But as the original post alluded to, we can forgive the first year record. The attendance is based on the fatigue of the fan base and not paying good money and traveling to watch a team that they love lose, especially games that we should win. After being let down year after year, a lot of fans are still in the Vols corner, but are also on a budget and cant afford to go to games, especially when so many games are toss ups. The fans will fill the stands when they can bank on seeing a good game. The coaching hire and the culture is not to blame here.

This was the least excited I have ever been about the start of a football season, and not much has changed now that it's almost over. Part of it was that nothing about the Pruitt hire inspired excitement, but most of it was just malaise from the decade of derp. So far, I don't have strong feelings either way about our new coach. I like that he does not sugar coat things or speak in cliches. I like that instead of dismissing criticism, he acknowledges mistakes and seems to learn from (most) of the them. I like that he clearly hates losing, but I wonder if he regrets taking this gig. I think he will be able to develop talent, but I wonder if his attitude toward the current state of our program will affect his ability to sign top prospects.

I do have confidence that Coach Fulmer hired the best coach that would actually take the job. I was one of those that was ready for a change in '08, but I am thankful to have Fulmer back. We may never again have a football coach who loves this place as much as we do, but, at least for the time being, we have an AD who does.

Agreed.

Improvement was very obvious in the 50-17 beatdown Saturday. Those that can't see that should go pull for another team!!

I can't argue this . We are still not a very good team . When we play really good teams we get beat very badly , specifically by teams that have a proficient passing quarterback. However, the same guys from last season have achieved a lot more this season than last season. 2 SEC wins against ranked teams can't be overlooked. I have said since the beginning of the season that an incremental improvement over the prior year results should be expected . 4 wins becoming 5 to 6 wins . Next seat 8 to 9 wins ..etc. There are just some problems that can't be coached up and can only be recruited over

Pruitt will be fine. The guy knows football and knows when he makes mistakes. Let him get his guys in. I know we're all so tired of saying the same things over and over, but we really don't have a choice. Maybe Pruitt lacks excitement and enthusiasm in his press conferences, but he has it on the sideline. That's what matters. Listen to Butch talk about football in the past and listen to Pruitt talk about it. If you can't tell a difference, well, there's something wrong with you.

The guy hates doing his coaches show because he has to sit there and watch all the mistakes. It irritates him. That's a good thing. Imagine going from having a stable of 5 stars 3 deep to this mess. He'll get them going. Patience......again.

He's our coach so I will.support him 100%. Honestly he has the personality of a sweet potato which kinda bothers me. However, winning does cure all. Like a lot if my fellow Vol fans, the last 10 years and cluster-***k Head Coach hires has taken its toll. Go Vols. Kick the schitt out of Candy!!

I'm going to go out on a limb and say it's not the money it costs but it's the thought of spending that money when it could be spent on something more worthwhile. Money nor travel time is the issue for me, I could be at all of the home games if I wanted to spend the money. Quick 4 hour trip on the interstate. I just choose not to spend the money right now. I can be heart broken at home. And it truly breaks my heart to see a group of Seniors go out like they have this year and last knowing that they were promised a championship effort out of the coaching staff that recruited them and didn't even get close to that effort. At least the seniors this year got a taste of what it could have been like.

Once the season is over and UK is unranked can we change the "beating 2 ranked SEC teams" quote that is bandied about so readily to "beating 2 very overranked SEC teams" or maybe " beating 2 SEC teams that were laughably ranked when we played them"? I mean that would be much more accurate, wouldn't it?

If we had talent enough to beat "2 ranked SEC teams" how the hell come we got boat-raced by Mizoo and are wringing our hands worrying about Vandy?

Pretty much. This was my 5th year with season tickets. I made it to the UF and Bama games even though I live nearly 7 hours away now. I usually work at least 2 weekends per month, so I requested both of those weekends off from work. While we enjoyed the excitement leading up to the games and being in Neyland/Knoxville, we chose to travel across the country and visit friends this past weekend. We attempted to sell our tickets, but couldn't. I was just as disappointed in the Rocky Mountains as I would have been in Neyland.

I agree that the two teams were over ranked . But the point is we have not won any SEC game in a long time . I think the getting boat raced by Mizzou is because they have a great quarterback and the other teams that boat raced us also had great QB's . We have no pass rush to speak of and no depth to sustain what we do have . So that is the thick and thin of the how . 2 SEC wins is better than no SEC wins . Also , every team has some teeth cutters on ranked teams that are not ranked at the end of the season . There are a lot of factors that go into that . Namely , who you beat and when. UK won some big games early to mid season. Auburn did too. I think the only team still ranked on Bama's schedule is LSU ...it certainly does not mean that they are not good . The middle of the SEC has beat itself up and UT has been right in the middle of that . UK beat some teams we could not beat , but we beat UK . This seems to be the story for the SEC outside of Bama. Again , I will take the progress of two wins over zero wins.

Our success against Vandy will depend on how our pass rush can affect their QB and how their QB performs against coverage ...just as our other wins and losses have been dictated.

When the 34 defense has 34 personnel and a measure of depth , the team will win a lot more. These things can't be coached up. You can' tape your x button faster to get better results here . Virtually every 'turn around' outside of a few anomalies depend on A ) the previous years result B ) the schedule C ) the first recruiting class. Last year 4 wins. Recruiting was torched due to the coaching search. The schedule is among or is the toughest in the nation. Yet you have seen an incremental improvement. If the turn around follows the typical script , you will see a larger uptick next season .

Yes honestly I do like him. I like him a lot. We went from the slick talking lie, cheat, steal his way through everything coach that is Lame. to the knock on your front door while your trying to take a nap on Sunday afternoon lawyer that is DaRick dolittle, to the everything is perfect and we are going to win next year every year coach in Lyle.

People most of the time do not like the truth. The truth is that we suck. We need to vastly improve in so many areas. First things first is we need to get guys on our roster that are physically equipped to play at this level. I do not give a flip about what any recruiting service says anymore!!!

Being a football coach is not a popularity contest. Its simply not. He brought here to do 1 thing and that is win football games.

I can not judge anything that he done off of this year. Our roster is just no where near what it needs to be with players that can play at this level. Getting there. You can see that our 2 freshman corners are already playing at a high level and they are still 3 years away from being able to order a cocktail at a restaurant.

We have beaten 2 SEC teams this year that were ranked.... twice as many as last year.

attendance is down because the fans have gotten jacked up excited for the last three coaching hires only to be left back in the same dumpster they were in before. He's having to drink some of the poison meant for those who came before him. Do I like Pruitt? Enough to leave the jury out on him for a while. Like others before him, he says the right things. I know he has it in him to teach guys to play football, but does he have what it takes to make the jump from coordinator to coach? I think he's honest enough to admit that he isn't an offensive minded guy, so he needs someone who can run the offense for him. Whether he has one or not, we will see when we find out what happens to Will Friend at the end of the year. If they do decide to keep him, I wonder if we might benefit from making him "Run Game coordinator" and switching Weinke to passing game coordinator. I would also love to see us to make a trip out to Arkansas State and bring Trooper Taylor back to coach our RBs. The guy can recruit and on the level of position coach he seems to excel. We also need to build a wall around David Johnson. Any team with much sense and a deep pocketbook that needs a WR coach will be after him. Probably more than any position on the team, I think I have seen the most growth in our WRs.

I know a lot of you are internet tough guys and actual conversation is far less likely than getting flamed. I don't hold it against you, it's just the East Tennessean fighter blood that flows through your veins. And no, this isn't a "knee jerk" reaction after a loss thread. This is a legitimate question/concern/conversation/get the gears in your head turning thread.

Do any of you guys actually like our coach? I know winning cures all. But I mean do you actually like the dude? Dig deep. Actually think about the question. Are you proud to call Jeremy Pruitt the coach of our beloved Vols? Or did Fulmer and our university totally just whiff the hell out of this thing the way they always do?

It would be fair to wait until the end of the season to judge, and even then seems a bit premature. But I'm not necessarily talking about his win/loss record. I'm talking about him as a representative of our program. Forget the 5-6 start. I can look beyond that.

Most of you are going to throw hateful things in my direction and tell me to go back to my momma's basement, but some numbers tell me that others may feel the same.

2009, Lane Kiffin's first and only season. 7-6 record. We averaged 100,000 fans in the seats.

2010, Dools first season. 6-7 record. We averaged 100,000.

2013, Butch Jones first season. 5-7 record. We averaged 96,000.

2016, Butch Jones best season. 9-4 record. 101,000 average attendance.

2018, Jeremy Pruitt's first season. 5-6 record. 92,869 average attendance. 3 games didn't even hit 90k.

There should be a spike in enthusiasm for a coach's first season, so why such a large drop in attendance? Lane obviously got fans excited. I remember it vividly. He was the first coaching change I had experienced and it was a feeling of new blood and a new era. Dooley received far less enthusiasm from the fans, but it was expected given the sudden and strange departure of Kiffin. Butch came in and really had the fan support. He said all the right things, knocked recruiting out of the park, beat Steve Spurrier in his first season. Hell, he crushed it.

Pruitt. It irked the hell out of me the way he answered Bob's question in the 2nd episode of The JP Show regarding running through the T for the first time. I stated that it bothered me right after it happened in the JP Show thread and caught some heat for it. Guess what? It still bothers me. Even more so now that we're 5-6. "It was uhhh....different", was the line. Mind you, this episode was following a win. It wasn't after getting straight whipped by West Virginia. No. It was after beating lowly ETSU, Pruitt's first win as the Tennessee head coach. His attitude sucks, and it's not good for business.

Do I like Pruitt more than Schiano? You're damn right I do. Do I like him more than Mike Leach? Not even close. Les Miles? Nope. Dan Mullen? Hard to say. Butch Jones? I don't think so. Dooley? I'm not sure.

Win, and of course, I'll shut up. But Coach Pruitt, you're making $4,000,000 a year to coach football. Ideally, you're supposed to win the games. If you don't, however, at least give us the impression that you're a good dude and that you're happy to be in Knoxville. Because at the end of the day, you're still going to be rich, and we're still going to be sitting on cold, hard, metal bleachers hoping that things change.

I'll go on record right now and say I have doubts that this experiment is going to work out. I think Mike Leach, Les Miles, or Dan Mullen would have been a better choice. And I'm not saying fire the guy. That's not going to accomplish anything. But win or lose, I don't really like this dude, and I'm feeling super disconnected from Tennessee football because of it.

Flame away.
No flame here bro, the dude has a big crimson A tatooed on his left shoulder blade. Let that sink in for just a minute. The only coach that CPF saw fit to hire is a full blooded died in the wool bammer. That not only irks me but I find it almost remarkable. The fact that he speaks like someone with a 5th grade education just makes it worse. I hope he wins big but I am with you, dont like the dude at all.

I would much, much rather have blunt honesty than another snake-oil salesman that wins the press conference.
Keep in mind, he’s on par with Butch Jones first season. Win the next one, make a bowl game, and win that and he’s +2, which is great. Lose, however, and he’s exactly the same 5-7, but with a bad attitude. That’s all I’m sayin.

I hope he wins. I've tried to be as supportive as I can of a hire I didn't, and still don't approve of. He's what we've got.

More than ever though, I feel that we are still three more years and another coaching search from relevance.

Tennessee shouldn’t be a place to “cut your teeth”. Risky hire at a terrible time where all we needed was a proven winner with head coaching experience to provide stability and get us back on track. Pruitt basically won the lottery.

Well that being said we should have thrown a fair amount of money to Les Miles and give his coordinators good money too as to secure a quality staff for several years. That would have been a safer bet IMO. We will soon see if that gamble will pay out. I think Pruitt has a great chance of becoming a good head coach...I just hope it's not after we fire him that he does.

At least the seniors this year got a taste of what it could have been like.

It is disheartening to see seniors not play in front of a packed house for their final home game. I know that they all wanted that. I hope that our new coaching staff can hold true to the promises that they are making to our new recruiting classes.

We will have a pretty good idea of what next year could bring us based on signing day in Feb. I hope we land a great class but should we lose Saturday that could all fall apart. Recruits don’t want to play for a program that isn’t getting better and winning on a consistent basis. 7-6 would show recruits that things are getting better and Pruitt is improving as a HC. It’s gonna take time people! I’m trying to be patient myself but I’m not good at it at all lol. I want wins NOW!! My verdict won’t be final on his performance until after 2020...I’m giving him 3 years to prove that he was either the right hire or a complete bust..
