I don't think that we can say Monte to UT is as much of a done deal as some are suggesting...

Im not as thrilled about this hire as some of you obviously are. He has ridden on his fathers coat tails. Whats impressive about his resume'. He was OC at USC but Sarkisian was there too. He was 5-15 at Oakland and was overmatched. Now he will be competing against Meyer, Saban, etc. Im concerned that this will be a mistake. Ask Ole Miss players about Ogeron and his style. Im afraid we will be no better off than we are now. HOPE IM WRONG....go big orange

No complaints here. I am very excited about our future. Hopefully all the whiners will just follow Fulmer out the door.

Sounds like a good hire....and with some potential side benefits for the defensive side of the ball with Monte.

Monte Kiffin is the mastermind behind the Tampa 2 scheme, which is a slight modification of Tony Dungy's Cover 2. His defensive philosophy has several hallmarks.

Speed over size and strength. Coordinators that employ Kiffin-style defenses will often replace linebackers with safeties and linemen with linebackers in order to put more speed on the field, an approach known as spinning down.

In particular, linebackers must be able to cover receivers; in the Tampa 2 scheme, one linebacker frequently drops back into pass protection, turning what looks like a Cover 2 defense into a Cover 3.

Kiffin's defenses also employ large but quick defensive/nose tackles as run-stoppers. Preventing scores over preventing yardage. A Kiffin coordinator doesn't care how many yards an offense gains, as long as the team doesn't score, an approach known as bend-but-don't-break.

Multiple defenses from one look. Kiffin-style defenses try to use the same personnel (or the same kind of personnel) at all times, so that the offense cannot adjust its play call based on the alignment of the defensive personnel.
Attacking and causing turnovers. Kiffin-style defenses focus on getting the ball away from the offense by stripping the ball away from the ball carrier or reading the quarterback to make an interception. The risk is that if the ball is not stripped or intercepted, then the ball carrier on offense has a better chance of gaining more yards or scoring; the reward is that the offensive drive is stopped without a score more often, frequently giving good field position.

First things first...Lane needs to get those recruits back into the fold.

Thanks.Sounds like one hell of a d.If he comes I hope he can incorporate at UT.I like the sound of it.But I will still miss Chief but now my curiosity is really broiling. And thank you HawaiiVol.

In all seriousness please give me a brief synopsis of Monte.I had never heard of him to my recollection 'til Kiffin's name came up for HC.Monte may be great but I just have no knowleg ofit but am always open to learning.Lack of knowledge is terrible but unwilling to learn is worse.

We live in Orlando and my son and I are huge Bucs fans and watch every Sunday... The Tampa Bay D is the reason they win alot of games and also keeps them in alot of games... They have had QB problems for years and the D has always shown up to play...

I thank you also.If it's true Kiffin is coming I hope his dad will take the pay cut and come too.But the only thing in concrete that I know of are the Ten Commandments. So I'll just anxiously await what comes.

Anxious is what I am.
want to hear the whole staff as it comes together in Dec.

please anyone that thinks Chavis is as good as Monte is has a lot to learn about football....
maybe next year tenn will play 5 yards off ball on 3rd and 10 instead of 15 yards off.

imagine EB and co in an attacking Defense.

I am sure with all the west coast ties Kiffin has he can find coaches for his offense. I am also sure that there are OC in the Pac10 that would love to get out of it and come to a conference that can compete for a title. If Oregon St beats Oregon it knocks out USC to the Rose Bowl since they beat USC in the regular season and because they have no conference championship game. Look at how many times USC has been on the outside looking in because of 1 loss and no conference game.

Pretty sure Tampa Bay also has the #4 ranked defense in the NFL right now. That's just off the top of my head, but they are very good.

I'm not totally sold on the popular opinion that Monte is a done deal either. I do hope they have some other good options in mind (Steele) if Monte doesn't work out.

I know that this has nothing to do with his coaching abilities, but I am anxious to see what folks come up with (especially the Bamers where I live) to make fun of. I don't think I will hear any Krispy Kreme jokes or "hey, your coach is fat" comments. Now if I can't come up with a good come back, I can just say "well, our coach looks a lot better than yours". LOL:)

My guess would be jokes about how young he is, like how he does his game prep on Xbox.

Sorry, I had to say it and get it off my chest. Now, I'll look forward to recruiting, the offseason, and next fall for CLK to make me eat crow.

It does no good to gripe about decisons that have already been made. Lets make the best of it.

Threads like this have a way of coming back and biting people in the A$$. I hope that you are wrong and this one does.
