Maybe Blackburn or new AD comes in and wants to make their own hire. If so, who are legitimate options:

1. Miles - he would be my first call. He's a brand name and proven winner.
2. Briles - again, a proven winner. Obviously, his issues at Baylor would have to be well vetted in advance.
3. Petrino - Louisville's losses at the end of the year take some shine off of this one.
4. Kiffin - he's getting a HC job somewhere again soon, although I cannot fathom it being UT. Maybe Houston or Oregon or one more year as an OC first.
5. Fleck - this is about the level we have gone in with the last 2 hires and he's like a poor man's Tom Herman.
Others?

Except Fleck hasn't beaten anybody. Dude is not that good.

Am I wrong in thinking I heard Blackburn was a big Butch supporter and was instrumental in bringing him here?

More realistic topic is viable DCs.

Petrino? What would the combined buyouts be, 20 mil?

A few years ago, Charlie Strong would have been considered a homerun hire. He had Louisville absolutely rolling, of course struggled badly at Texas.

I've heard there are many reasons it didn't work for him at Texas which have nothing to do with his ability to coach.

If nothing else, he's always been one helluva recruiter. Too risky at this point? Maybe. But I think he's an interesting candidate.

I think he'll be here, just in the press box

I believe Strong lost to Butch 2 out of 3 years. I don't believe Strong would fly here.

Chip Kelly?

Thinking the same thing, Kelly won at collegiate level with gimmicks financed by Nike like shiny helmets talent from Cali migrated to IMO. He has yet to figure out how to coach a defense, if you think our D against Vandy stunk, hire this guy to see how bad it could really get.

Not sure that Les Miles wouldn't come here and do the same. Strong run game, mediocre QB yearly, decent defense, 3-4 guaranteed trick plays a game and ALMOST beat Alabama every year. Seems like he's stuck in an older era of football. But I may be wrong.

Unfortunately, we're going to be forced to wait until after the 2017 season or God forbid, the 2018 season.

If the team continues declining and showing no significant improvement (not referring to just wins) then he's done after next season. However, if CBJ can beat Florida and UGA again, his job will be safe heading into 2018.

It was good enough to go to the National Championship

The reason we hired Butch was because he was the only coach who wanted the job. What has changed that will make any good coach come here. I would like to replace Butch, and I think it is an absolute must to replace Shoop. However, I don't expect anyone worth having to come knocking at our door. The coaches LSU wanted were asking for $6M. We aren't going to pay that, and we will end up replacing Butch with another Butch or, worse yet, another Dooley.
