Your uncle was obviously a fan of the excellent film A Bronx Tale... but it's a pretty good observation on why it doesn't hurt to much to lend money to someone you don't like.My Uncle once said "If you lend a guy $20 and you never see him again, that was $20 well spent.".
Kick him loose, let the NIL collective and lawyers figure out if he owes any money back, and move ahead in life.
Release was granted, article linked.
Legend Bey Granted Release - Knoxnews
“As a coveted recruit, Bey undoubtedly signed a lucrative NIL deal with Tennessee. But by rule, a university cannot pay direct school-to-player NIL money until the student-athlete is enrolled and on campus, which means UT had not paid him any money yet.”
Saw this in another post in another thread, and I intend to save it for future use...Your uncle was obviously a fan of the excellent film A Bronx Tale... but it's a pretty good observation on why it doesn't hurt to much to lend money to someone you don't like.

What does their offensive ranking have to do with how good they are? They have lost one game to the #2 team. Jesus. You act like OSU is some bum team that shouldn’t be in the playoffs.
wasn't gonna get Moa after Utah up the dollars. we refused..Coaches obviously really valued him and I can see why when I watch him play. I wanted us to sign Moa much more than him and it seems like it may have cost us both of them. Guess that just the way it will go sometimes in this era of college football.
"Other programs work with kids and get them into the portal, then sign them." - This is not allowed in the current system. No one on this board knows what goes on behind the scenes with recruits or potential portal entries. For all we know, TN people may be contacting players who have not yet entered the portal, but I doubt many, if any, head coaches do that directly.
"...should never have gotten this far." - How far? The kid, or his legal representatives since he is 17, signed the paperwork. Heupel accepted it thinking Bey legitimately changed his mind especially since Heupel or others in the program spoke with Bey on signing day. It was only reported yesterday that Bey officially requested a release. There may be some legal review with any NIL paperwork or perhaps a confidentiality agreement was drafted which need to be resolved before he can be released, but it will happen. Releasing him now vs 1-2 more days makes no difference. The signing period is closed until regular signing opens in Feb.
