Legend Bey Requested Release

We assume a lot of things on VolNation. I bet the coaches haven’t spent two seconds worrying about this kid. I bet the release is granted but legalities prevents any comments from the school or staff. Let’s move on. One player is not going to define this class.

Agreed. My point here, I suppose, is that UT was behind the ball with the Nico and Boo sagas...and now here we go again. Or maybe not. Maybe they knew all along what would eventually happen with Nico and Boo. But I kinda doubt it, given the effort to "rehab" Boo. And if so, well then they misplayed it horribly.

UT obviously knows that Bey is never going to suit up for the Vols. Might as well acknowledge it. It's not like Bey is going to sue UT for announcing that they won't hold him to his NLI. Just get it over with.

"That which must be done eventually..."

I know all that. WTF was he allowed to sign if there was a good enough rapport to know he was just going to back out. There's no way you can spin this that doesn't look bad on the staff.
More on him and his family. They knew he was uncertain about his decision. They knew when his birthday is. They knew he could have waited to commit till February. Why rush?? Time to take responsibility for their own poor decisions. ;) ;) ;)

We don’t want anyone who doesn’t want to be here…set him free and focus on the guys who want to be here.

I was primarily responding to the folks making Bey out to be to be a bad guy when it appears he was pushed to TN by family, as a minor.
I looked back at news accounts and I was mistaken; Bey signed and the next day made it known that he was being pushed to TN on social media. I thought he'd made his desire for OSU before his signing.

So, yes, I agree there was no reason for TN to back off signing him if unaware he didn't want to be here. It was apparent within a day of signing, that he'd never see the field at TN as he became 18 during this portal period. There's no good reason Heupel won't release him.
It's a crap situation honestly overall. Obviously on kids that were on your radar you are going to continue to go after. So I can see how they were thinking they just flipped the kid. I am not sure what the overall issue with almost all news media is when it comes to UT.

It feels like every early article here was basically saying that TN paid the family off is the reason he committed to UT. Then you add this whole disaster into the mix of the Nico and Boo issues and it makes people think this is a staff issue. Nico was 100% on his dad by all accounts. Dude would have media signings and meetings set up only to call his dad to get him out of those. He wanted the NIL , but didn't want to put in the work for it. The Boo thing was totally different. Boo has been an issue for a while now. The kid is super talented, but he has some people helping him make decisions that may end up hurting him in the long run.

Good luck to all 3 of these kids in the future. Hopefully for them it works out.

Agree with your Agreement. The only part of this is how Bey used the current system to get OSU back to the conversation. I don't like to be manipulated especially by a 17 year old.

He felt jilted and decided to play games with it. Should have waited for later signing day but he needed leverage over OSU so he signed with Tennessee and used this to gain leverage on OSU. It doesn't seem like the brightest one in the box so I am sure he received information from OSU as to how to handled this situation.

OSU went and flipped Henry from Oregon and got a better player as a result. Years to come may or may not haunt him. Kids and flashy objects. Tampering by OSU may or may not come out. As long as we lose with 0$, then, cut him loose.

Timing, portal, $$$$ and release will come in due time. No need to draw this out, but keep the "birds in hand" for the future. We have no idea what conversations have taken place only what is assumed. Tennessee has offered a release and now Bey has evidently requested it, both done publicly. Other fish in the ocean, stronger, better, faster and experienced at this level.

I've suspected all along that we offered a bag for signing to Mom and she took it. Whether Legend was in on it or not, Mom knew he'd never go to UT but took the bag. She knew she could get him to sign that day because he knew he could do what he wanted in Feb.

Now, when he backs out, we'll probably never see the signing bag we gave her returned.

Was it a family scam or just the Mom or am I wrong? I dunno but the last minute flip reeks of money for Mom to get him to sign THEN we try to get him onboard again. Maybe it was a calculated risk by UT.

Like a lot of business deals, you invest money in a plan and hope it works but leave yourself a "shutter it" date/amount of money where you can pull the plug before losing too much time and money on it when it fails to fly.

Did he or his family make the call on signing day?

Did he actually sign the documents and send them in?

Did both sides execute Financial documents and NLI that day? Did money change hands? If so have these issues been legally resolved?

How can you take your position without the answers to these questions.

Not going to vilify the kid, nor the family. What if the family was right about his BEST path? I can see the kid loving the shiny current NC and now see no path for him here, nor a need to give him a release till all the legal issues are positively resolved.

It would be stupid to expedite the release and assist any school to legally admit him with ANY exposure. Once again, DW has this and will deal with all aspects of this situation.
Fair questions, but from what I've read (limited amount), his family forced him to sign with UT because he was still three weeks from turning 18 and they disagreed with him signing with OSU.

I would be shocked if money changed hands. Might as well release him now, because in this day and age, he will leave via the portal at some point any way. Holding him would be a bad look for us as a program. Plus, Bey is a luxury, not a need at this point. Our WR room is loaded. It wouldn't be worth the bad publicity.

If I but a car, but it is never delivered, I want my money back. UT deserves the same!
Unless the Mom/Bey had a signed contract for ALL the money that might've changed hands, it's a bit like calling the cops because your drug dealer took your money and didn't deliver.

If everything is on paper about money that changed hands, there's a trail. You can pursue that money legally.

If money changed hands that's maybe a little frowned on by NCAA recruiting rules and maybe a little under the table, no trail. Good luck ever seeing that money again.

Rather it happen now instead of rumors in August high-jacking/distracting the team. He and Boo can room together for all I care at U of Anywhere.

Coach Heupel and/or AD White need to improve their foresight in a big way. This is the 3rd instance in the last 12 months where a football player has created undue drama, and this most recent one hasn't even taken a single snap as a Vol. The optics here are not good.

Nico. After he jumped ship literally the day before the O&W game, it came out that he (and his Dad) had been making demands and threats as far back as prep for the CFP game. So roughly 5 months of nonsense. His departure was a plus for UT Football.

Boo. Same thing. This time it was his bats**t crazy Mom who fanned the flames while Boo did his best impression of a teenager who should probably have still been in diapers. And then we watched another 4+ months of that crap before the inevitable and predictable end finally played out. His departure is a plus for UT Football.

And now, Bey. Regardless of which narrative you choose to believe as to how he ended up signing his NLI for UT, it's abundantly clear that he doesn't want to be here.

It's time to stop playing games with entitled idiots (and their parents), and start playing football games. This program should be 100% dialed-in on bowl prep and doing the advance work in the Portal to get ready for the 2026 season.

Just issue a press release stating that it appears that Bey doesn't want to be at UT, and that UT is releasing him from his NLI effective immediately. Wish him well, and move on.

This is not hard to figure out, or fix. He doesn't want to be here. Cut him loose, and go find another player that does.

Good grief...
I believe that is MY phrase!

Never waste an opportunity to be blindly indignant, eh?

Bey’s release request confirms what we already knew; he didn’t want to be at UT to begin with. Now, if everyone in media was reporting that, how is it possible that Heupel didn’t know? And why would you want to go ahead and sign the guy knowing that?

When considered, mine is a perfectly rational - believable - comment. Anyone with an inkling of what occurred saw this coming. The fault is primarily with his family members and himself, but yes, TN isn’t an innocent party here and has no room to cry or make out like the young fellow is the bad guy. He literally had a flashing sign over his head saying “Not My Choice”.

Put a band-aid on it, tenderfoot.
If Bey had never wanted to be at UT, why commit so many months ago? That had an effect on future potential recruits. I say slame the door on his arse.

This shows me something that is not a popular take here. Heupel seems to have gotten rather passive with respect to team management. He REACTS to items vice being PROACTIVE. He waits until things happen, then reacts to them. He fails to be proactive and create his own situations.

The portal is a great example. Other programs work with kids and get them into the portal, then sign them. Heupel seems to wait and see who goes into the portal on their own accord, then try and sign them.

It has been known that Bey wanted out of his deal from the beginning when Mom made him sign with Tennessee. Heupel should have been on this, and this should never have gotten this far. Instead, Heupel REACTS and we have a news story.

I could be wrong, and likely am, but that is how it appears to me.

Move on to somebody who wants to play for the Big Orange and hope that one day this dude and his family will regret his choice.

"Other programs work with kids and get them into the portal, then sign them." - This is not allowed in the current system. No one on this board knows what goes on behind the scenes with recruits or potential portal entries. For all we know, TN people may be contacting players who have not yet entered the portal, but I doubt many, if any, head coaches do that directly.

"...should never have gotten this far." - How far? The kid, or his legal representatives since he is 17, signed the paperwork. Heupel accepted it thinking Bey legitimately changed his mind especially since Heupel or others in the program spoke with Bey on signing day. It was only reported yesterday that Bey officially requested a release. There may be some legal review with any NIL paperwork or perhaps a confidentiality agreement was drafted which need to be resolved before he can be released, but it will happen. Releasing him now vs 1-2 more days makes no difference. The signing period is closed until regular signing opens in Feb.
