Valve will be releasing DLC for Left 4 Dead 2. It will feature, along with some new weapons and a new type of zombie called the fallen survivor, a new campaign (full length missions) called "The Passing," where the survivors from Left 4 Dead 2 will meet up with and team up with the original survivors from the first game. The DLC is to be released at the end of this March, per Valve, though price hasn't been said yet.

Following that, 1 month later (April) Valve will be releasing new DLC for the first Left 4 Dead game with, among other things, a new campaign featuring what happened to the original survivors at the end of the original game and, almost as a prequel, how they ended up arriving in "the Passing" campaign in the second game. Again, this one should be out in April.

Sounds like fun for owners of both games

surprised they're still making content for the first one. i wouldn't be surprised to see them lose money on that to be honest. not sure how many people would buy it.

I have L4D2, and have played it once. That's partly because of ME2, and partly because I am as busy as snot right now. (if snot is really busy)

I think part of it is honoring their word they made to the minor "boycotters" who went after Valve for releasing L4D2 so soon after the 1st, claiming it should all be expansion stuff instead (I say minor b/c the number reached like 37,000 - compared to the 2 million copies the game actually sold - and most of those people ended up buying L4D2 anyways)

But anyways they assured everyone they would keep making updates and new material for both...

see here about it all:

Left 4 Dead 2 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Boycott
The weekend following the game's announcement at the 2009 E3 Convention, some Left 4 Dead players called for a boycott of Left 4 Dead 2 in the form of a Steam community group called "L4D2 Boycott (NO-L4D2)", growing to over 10,000 members by the end of the weekend following the game's announcement,[44] and reaching more than 37,000 about a month later.[45][46] The group noted that in addition to the potential lack of further Left 4 Dead content, they were concerned with several of the aspects such as characters, visuals, and music, shown in the E3 demonstration video, feeling these were inappropriate to the first game's aesthetics, and that the release of the sequel so soon after the first game will fracture the community.[44][47] It also questioned the timing of the sequel so soon after the first game[44] and noted the lack of additional downloadable content for Left 4 Dead based on comments from Gabe Newell made during October 2008.[48]

In response to these complaints, Valve marketer Doug Lombardi stated that the announcement of Left 4 Dead 2 at E3 should not be taken to indicate that Valve would no longer support the first game.[45][49] He also noted that what was shown at E3 was only a fraction of the new content and atmosphere for the game.[45] He asked the community to "trust [them] a little bit", and noted that their team was eager to get new material out to a large body of players of Left 4 Dead and determined that the sequel would be the best option.[27] Lombardi also stated that the most common desire from players was the need for more campaigns, and felt that the addition of these along with new enemies and weapons made the content much more than downloadable content as was the case of Left 4 Dead's "Survival Pack".[27] Both Faliszek and project lead Tom Leonard stated that the team, in putting down ideas to add to the original game, found that too much of the content relied on each other, making incremental patches in the same style as Team Fortress 2 very difficult to do.[23][24] Leonard stated that he suggested rolling up the content into a sequel to be released a year after Left 4 Dead's release, an idea that the rest of the team eventually warmed up to.[23] Faliszek stated that Newell was skeptical of the idea when the team brought the sequel forward, but still allowed the project to go through.[24] Faliszek noted that the boycott did not change any work on the development of Left 4 Dead 2, but did affect "how we talked about it and how we talked with everybody".[50] Some of the player community has also supported Valve, forming a "L4D Enthusiasts" group in response to the boycott group.[51][52]

In September 2009, Valve flew out two of the boycott group leaders to playtest Left 4 Dead 2, to which they responded that they felt that the sequel was well done. This opinion was not shared by some of the members of their Steam boycott group.[53] This event, through a series of correspondences made in jest, shortly led to Valve's Gabe Newell and designer Erik Johnson flying to Australia to visit "Joe W-A", a Left 4 Dead modder. Newell jokingly reported that Valve was "boycotting" Joe's new mod for the game when Joe asked when he would be flown to Valve in the same manner as the Left 4 Dead 2 boycotters, but whimsically offered that if Joe was to pay to fly him to the country, he would take a look at it. Joe was able to raise the required funds, $3000, through donations through his website, though ultimately Newell paid for the trip himself, with Joe's collected donations going to the Child's Play charity.[54][55]

On October 14, 2009, the boycott groups' leaders announced that they had ended their boycott and were shutting down the 40,000-plus group. The leaders were satisfied that Valve was retaining their promise of additional content and fixes for Left 4 Dead, as evidenced by the then-recent release of the "Crash Course" campaign, believing their boycott helped to assure this commitment. The leaders also believed that the group itself was losing its purpose, being populated by those that were simply trolling to bad-mouth Valve and other players.[56] In a video interview posted on October 29, 2009, Gabe Newell stated, "for people who joined the Boycott Group on Steam, we can look at their pre-orders, and they're actually pre-ordering the product at a higher rate than Left 4 Dead 1 owners who weren't in the Boycott".[57]

Scratch that. The guy in charge of PR (someone name Chet) at valve confirmed that the DLC is not coming out today. It's still supposed to be targetted for before the end of March (and apparently not over a weekend) so most feel it will maybe be on Tuesday

Update On ‘Left 4 Dead 2′ DLC Game Modes

We are one day out from the release of new DLC for Left 4 Dead 2 and lots of new information is out.

Remember last week when I said there would be more than one new game mode? Yeah, well how does a minimum of twenty sound? [Read 'Left 4 Dead 2' Add-On Available Next Week.] That’s right, each week there will be a new special game type, what the Valve corporation is calling “Mutations.” You know like, kill all the zombies you can with a chainsaw that has unlimited gasoline mode. Sounds fun, right? This will certainly offer some variety to an already addicting game. Valve has also stated that they already have twenty lined up for release, with more presumably coming.

Also released is a new poster for the content, which you can see over at the official blog.

GameSpy: Valve to Release Left 4 Dead 2 DLC Tomorrow - Page 1

The first DLC package for Valve's zombie survival shooter Left 4 Dead 2 arrives tomorrow with familiar friends, new weapons, and enemies. The Passing also brings with it new game modes, including Mutations, a series of weekly events that should keep zombie hunters entertained for months.

Valve has been teasing the DLC's new game modes for weeks, and as announced on the official Left 4 Dead blog, they include a co-op challenge mode, and the previously mentioned Mutations. From Valve:
These week-long runs of new gameplay modes range from "Realism Versus" mode to "Chainsaw Massacre," which gives all players chainsaws with an unlimited supply of gasoline. There are over 20 Mutations planned, each playable on all L4D2 Campaigns. Mutations are exclusively available to owners of "The Passing" DLC.

Sounds like this might be all L4D2 owners were hoping for and more

I downloaded The Passing last night and played through it....it was kind of short but fun. It was a bit neat meeting up with the original survivors....well most of them.

BTW if anyone wants to play some L4D2 sometime, my gamertag is ResidentialEvil. I've not even played through all the campaigns of L4D2 yet, in fact The Passing is the first campaign I've finished.

There's nothing that makes me want to smash my controller than playing a stage start to finish, then at the very end of the last stage, getting left to die by the other people I'm playing with and therefore I don't get to survive. It's happened to me 4 times now.

Just 5 minutes ago I was about to finish Swamp Fever, we had called the boat, and right as the boat came of course a final swarm comes. Well right before it came, one of my teammates was down. I revived him....and then the piece of crap left me to die when I was overrun before I could get to the boat.

yeah that does suck. But I mean part of the goal is for at least 1 person to make it through...and you guys did. so I mean, I guess think of it that way

that's why you should always play with people that have mics. i'm sure you were with a bunch of guys who didn't.....but if they did, then that's even more douchey.

Yeah but you don't get the achivement when you die, which is what I was going for mostly. The reason I was playing online is I've played those stages in single player and AI controlled bots can be really idiotic. It turns out....so can human controlled characters.

BTW has anyone heard when the new L4D DLC is coming out, the one that bridges L4D and L4D2? I thought originally they said it was coming out about a month after "The Passing" did, but it's almost a month and a half and I've heard nothing more about it.
