"We're going to throw the whole playbook at them and see what sticks".

I always thought this was a stupid approach by CPF. It may have contributed more to last year's problems and Fulmer's down fall generally than any other thing.

How do you develop a coherent offensive identity when you're just working with what "sticks" (comes easy)? What's the foundation for your attack?

The answers are: Pretty much "you can't" and "nothing". That plus the "take what the defense gives" mentality is a recipe for disaster.

IMHO, this approach made Clawson's job impossible. Every good offensive system has its "bread and butter" plays. Plays that every thing else is built on. You run an isolation left... then a counter trap off that... then play action off both... They basically threw everything in his complicated offense at them... and next to nothing stuck.

Major kudos to the new staff for working at the foundation for their system until the team "gets it" rather than letting weaknesses stay weak and dictate what they can/can't do offensively. They've got a "we're going to do THIS" approach- OUTSTANDING.

bad play on the field...camera pans to cpf...grimace, pull the hat down, straighten the hat back up and clap for crompton as he comes back off the field. end scene.

i can't tell you how happy i am that my coach will never again clap after we throw a pick six.

I can't wait to see Lane the first time this happens and he gets dead up in somebody's ARSE...then Neyland EXPLODES!!!

I wouldn't count on it. Many if not most coaches do it. I've seen Meyer do it.

About the only guy I think doesn't do it is Spurrier... he just pulls out the hook.

All of the above are classics! I was going to say the awful "mustang" package in which we would let the opposing offense get first down after first down. I also will not miss the "dag gumits" and CPF 's hand clapping after every terrible play. I WANT to see somebody getting in somebody else's ARSE!!! Especially when they ain't hustling! That makes me madder than anything else! Even if you don't know what to do, DARN IT GO HARD! Rip somebody's head off!!!

'This was one of our best practice weeks'...then we proceed to go out and get slammed.

With practices closed there was no outside verification. From just watching the limited videos of the current practices compared to previous years, my impression is that this year's are much more intense and physical, and while it is hard to tell from a short clip, perhaps more organized and purposeful. This change alone should stranslate into a couple more wins per year.

Playing the players that he felt the most loyalty to for whatever reason regardless of whether they were the best player or not.

Thanks for reminding us of those inane phrases. And yes, the Mustang package is merely the "prevent defense"...more often that not preventing VICTORY by the good guys.
GO VOLS!

I hated when CPF said "working like heck" he used that about as much as this board uses lulz.

"We had a feeling all week that they were going to do something like this (an onside kick). We practiced for it. They just surprised us."--Fulmer after the 41-17 lashing by Bama in 2007.
