How in the hell did the answer to our question begin and end with Greg Schiano when vastly superior options like Leach and Gundy were out there for the taking?
Does his system work? It worked in two places where you are fighting with one hand tied behind your back. Lubbock and Pullman are two of the most difficult places to recruit from in this nation and Leach has managed to make both programs extremely competitive in their conferences.
At Tennessee, centrally-located to some of the greatest talent pools in the nation with an emergent in-state talent base, he would thrive.
There are many ways to win in this conference. Too many people out there believe you have to operate a power running scheme to get things done. This plays right into the hands of Alabama, as Saban's defensive scheme is at its best against such an offensive approach. This is why this paradigm gets played up in a media that routinely kisses Nick Saban's ass at every opportunity.
But the folks who do the best against Saban, the Spurriers, Malzahns, Freezes, and (with an elite-level quarterback) Sumlins, do it with a balanced offense and a willingness to stretch the field vertically and horizontally. Those who fail routinely against Alabama simply play a conservative game on a short field and make it easy on them.
Leach's approach reminds me of what Fulmer and Cutcliffe were doing while together at Tennessee. It is balanced and it echoes Cutcliffe's belief that balance is the possession of equal competency in the run or the pass, not some sense that you always achieve at or near a 50/50 run-to-pass ratio statistically. Leach is only different in that he opens up the run through the use of the pass while Fulmer and Cut used the running game to open up opportunities, particularly down the field for the likes of Pickens, Kent, and Swain, in the passing game.
Washington State was a dumpster fire before Leach arrived there. After ten years of mismanagement, we find ourselves in a similar situation. But there is nothing going on here in terms of record or talent that Mike Leach hasn't seen in worse working order in Pullman. This job would not scare him. And that, when combined with proven ability, really is what is required here.
