LB's that Played at UT That Were signed as RB's

Will West made a statement yesterday online that was idiotic (Normal for this man). His statement towards Banks moving to MLB or OLB was a move for the coaches and not the player. First and foremost Banks requested it, second does he not know the history of UT linebackers? In the hay day UT recruited RB's to play LB, If you look back at the most successful LB's that played at UT most were RB's in HS. Al Wilson comes to mind. The reason why they moved them to LB was they were fast and had a never say quit attitude.. Will West (I'm not a fan of his by any stretch) fails to understand is UT made a living off of RB's moving to LB when signed and thrived. Banks would be a fine addition as a LB. Fast, Nose for the ball, and aggressive. I wouldn't doubt if CPF mentioned this to CJP. It's smart and makes sense. Get back to the basics that made you what you were. Like the post or hate it but moving Banks to LB is a super smart move. Will West can go dunk his head in a bucket and as bad as I hate to say it, doesn't have the sense to pull it out. I would prefer he just stop ceasing to exist at that point.

He never picks UT to win, always negative, and has a doom and gloom attitude after every game. His break down after the AU game should let every UT fan know where this CLOWN, and yes he is a CLOWN stands on UT football. It wasn't UT played a solid game, it was AU handed UT the game. Will West is a Joke! Plain and simple and hard to find a reason this idiot has a talk show on a Tennessee sports market.

Al Wilson, Eric Westmoreland, Eddie Moore, Chris Ramseur, George Kidd, and Dominique Stevenson all come to mind from the 90's.

Most RB's played LB in HS if they had to go both ways. Fast and instinctive hitters on offense make the better LB's....... no arguing that point. Unless you want to. I was a LB in HS that moved to CB in college because of my speed, hitting, and vertical. I think I know what I'm talking about, Might not but I'm pretty sure I do.

Totally agree that at the high school level the skill positions are going to be filled with the best athletes on the field. Generally, in high school these better athletes can get by on their athleticism and just seek and destroy.

My question for you is once all the better athletes get together at college this out athlete and just seek and destroy attitude won't work so well or will it.

I think banks could make a great rb or lb because he has the intangibles but can he really make the move to lb in a week? Seems like he wouldn't make the right reads, know the pass coverage responsibilities, it could get ugly quick. Your thoughts?

Most high schools do not have a lot of D1 talent on their rosters. Often these kids have positions in the middle of the field no matter whether O or D. When they do have D1 talent you can bet the hs coaches do what they can to get the ball in their hands on offense. That means most often, not always, these kids are either QBs or RBs. The same can be said of defense as when they are on that side of the ball most often these kids are LBs and safeties in the middle of the field. Kids that have the size or elite speed they tend to gravitate and stay at their hs skill positions other than OL. Lots of college coaches only want kids that play DL in hs and make OLs out of the less aggressive DLs. The U was known for this back in their heyday don't know if they still are or not. Heard Coach Pittman now at UGA that used to be a very good OL coach for us discuss this as well. Really wants kids that played some DL in hs at least for his OL.

We have depth at LB and Banks was the only physical runner we had. Given time to develop i think the fumbling would've been fixed. Just don't get this one but we'll see.

Not disagreeing with the point you're making but to my memory Al was recruited as a safety and changed to LB. He didn't play RB at UT.

I like the Banks move. He can always go back to RB, or he could add to the great history of converted RB's to move to defense. The kid has the want to I guarantee you that.
A.J. Was a bad ass at fullback

Not defending Will West because he does often talk out of his ass, but in radio(notably sports) there is typically one personality that is supposed to play the "negative" or "pessimistic" role in order to help drive the conversation or piss people off so they'll call in and so on and so on. His character is the contrarian and he plays it fairly well.

So was Al Wilson signed by UT as a RB?

Your post even admits that these guys were already LBs before getting to college. Perhaps they were really just LBs playing RB in HS?
No. Yes, Al Wilson was an All-America RB in high school but was recruited to play safety at UT. After being toasted in coverage in practice several times, Chief moved him to LB and the rest is history

Eric Westmoreland was RB and LB at my Alma mater. If I'm not mistaken, he was a star at RB but I imagine his build and speed landed him at LB in college.
Yes Eric Westmoreland was a Mr Football award winner as a RB at Marion Co high school in 1996. We played him in the Clinic Bowl that year.

Aside from Will West (I’m not a fan), I believe Ernest Fields and Dwayne Dotson (late 80s - early 90s) were both recruited as RBs and turned out to be hard hitting LBs. Fields would rattle your ancestors bones when he hit you.

Al was a running back for two years at JCM and quarterback for one. Ran for over 1000 yards each year. He had over 150 tkls his sr year as a linebacker. (6’0 220)

#2 rated strong safety by Emfinger.

Could do without all the wishing of someone else to go die or ceasing to exist there, bud. Relax.

Eric Westmoreland is another that comes to mind. He was recruited as a running back and turned into a linebacker. Ended up having a pretty good run in the nfl also.

Played with Dewayne Dotson in high school, excellent RB but was recruited as DE/LB. He played with Daryl Hardy and Earnest Fields iirc, never played a down as RB.

Al Wilson came in as a linebacker. I’m sure someone already posted that, but I’m tired and haven’t read this thread.

We have depth at LB and Banks was the only physical runner we had. Given time to develop i think the fumbling would've been fixed. Just don't get this one but we'll see.

Pruitt knows that we will be in some close games the next few seasons. He doesn't need a Peterman at Q.B. who throws interceptions every game OR A. Foster or Banks who have fumbles. In close games, a turn over can be the deciding factor in a win or a loss.
I don't see Banks ever playing tailback again..... Too risky.. You can work on fixing the fumbling and may go several games with out a fumble but with the game on the line he may fumble again.
I recall the Penn State game where our full back ran for 30 yards and ended up fumbling the ball and that gave Penn State the momentum and they won.

Al was on high school All-American teams...as a linebacker.
