More broadly speaking, I know that on paper the coach supposedly doesn’t select the roster but I have a hard time believing the coach doesn’t have at least some say and IMO I think that’s the way it should be.

I personally think Parker should have been selected and if Auriemma had major responsibility for the decision then I disagree with him. I’m not going to assign personal motives for this kind of decision - I wasn’t in the room and I’m not someone who knows the players and coaches personally, and exactly what goes into making the best roster decisions.

If the coach does in fact influence the roster selection and it turns out that on Kara’s watch someone was left off that I thought perhaps should have been included, I’m not going to make any negative assumptions as to her motivations, even if the omitted player is a UConn grad.

I respect Kara as a person, as a player, as a coach and as enough of a patriotic citizen who will make her best professional judgment as to the team that represents our country. And I would feel this way about anyone selected to coach the national team.

Bird's role is pretty equivalent to being the GM of a pro franchise. When a GM chooses a coach, it is usually someone they envision working with and we can expect the coach will have some input into the team selection.
