Lawrence Frank - Boston Celtics Assistant

I see nothing here that leads me to believe that he could recruit. I'm seeing Don DeVoe in the later years with Frank. He doesn't look particularly impressive, doesn't have a staff, doesn't have a network of high school coaches that he knows and has been working with for several years. X's and O's and knowing the college game will absolutely not get it done imo.

I think this would be an awful hire unless he is somehow a tremendous recruiter with a dynamic personality and nothing listed above leads me to that conclusion.

I think assistant coaches in the NBA are often guys that couldn't make it as head coaches in the college ranks primarily because their personalities aren't strong enough to pull it off. I have never met Frank and he may be an exception but I would be very, very leery of anyone plucked from an assistant position in the NBA.

By appearance alone he looks more like a Mike Hamilton than a Bruce Pearl or Calipari or Patino and that doesn't bode well for recruiting success again imo.

You do realize that he has been a head coach in the league, right?

I think 3-5 years of Lawrence Frank would be worth it.

I agree. This hire would likely keep both Hopson and Harris one more year to be coached by a former NBA coach. Probably would make Ware and Jones much more likely to stick with their commitments. Other recruits would look at UT differently with an NBA coach running the program. I just think this would improve our chances the next two years which will be the roughest ones, and would make us more attractive to other coaches should he move back to the NBA in 3+ years.

Also, I think that our sanctions will be about 1/3 or less of what they would have been if BP had been kept.

Do what?

He's proven he can coach at the highest level. Don't think a coach that has coached at the NBA level is not going to be able to recruit kids whose hopes and dreams are focused on playing in the NBA. He has college experience at UT and knows about recruiting and coaching at UT. He would be an excellent hire.

He has never been the top dog on this level. Again not saying i wouldnt hire him just saying there are alot of unknowns wih him.

Dont know either of those things. Just because he had less than a .600 record with the nets definitely doesnt prove either of those to me.

Are you seriously arguing that since his Nets teams weren't more competitive that he can't coach?

The Nets?? Really??

Hes expressed interest (per Hubbs) for the job already and has coached here. Ill be very surprised if he isnt our guy. Unless he wants a clause that allows him to go back to the league.
Apparently he's going to be a front runner for the Celtics job soon. It doesn't make sense to choose a college team that has never made the Final Four over the most successful NBA team of all time, IMO.

My top three are Stevens from Butler, with Lawrence Frank and Tubby Smith running 2a and 2b. I don't think that UT can afford a young up and comer right now because of the credibility issues around the program. If UT can't get Stevens, I would prefer a more seasoned coach that has some connections in the NCAA and instant credibility. I hate to say it, but a caretaker coach. It just seems like every year four or five young guys that take teams to the tournament, the teams get hot and get to the Sweet 16 or Elite 8, and then that coach sells for sunnier pastures and a big payday. Look at Arkansas. There last two coaches have fit this mode, the young up and comer who did well in a single NCAA tournament, but could not get it done at another university. Give me a seasoned a professional guy for a few years that can reastablish the recruiting pipeline, bring a little credibility and consistentcy, and prepare the program for the future. I do have a Darkhorse candidate just for speculation sake, What about Tom Cream from Indiana. He surely knows that Indiana would drop him at the drop of a dime if Stevens says he'd leave Butler. He's a heck of a coach but is just in a bad situation after that mess Kelvin Sampson left hime. Cream, I think, would be good here, considering his buyout isn't too high.

I agree to an extent. Thats why I mentioned the clause, which I dont think Hambone and the administration will go for.

I never said that...in fact i actually said we dont really know if he would be a good college coach just because of his nba history.

There has been no indication from Danny Ainge that Frank would be the most likely man to take over the Celtics when Doc leaves. This was reported just a few days ago by Adrian Wojnarowski at Yahoo!.

EDIT: That said, I would be surprised if he ends up here. I think it is too much of a gamble to wait until the end of the NBA season for him. And there is no way he is leaving the Celtics with less than one month left in the season, and the Celtics a legit title contender. What's more....the university needs stability in it's coaches, and when there is a likelihood someone would offer him a head coaching gig in the NBA at some point, it's too much of a risk. Just my opinion.

If indeed he is in serious consideration for the Celtic's job (which he is): does that not tell the naysayers something of importance? There are two - count them - two - legendary coaching positions in the NBA. Celtics and Lakers. You are not allowed to fail as a head coach at either. Serious consideration for one of those jobs means that you are considerd to be one the very best by your peers. So it is laughable to think that he cannot handle a college job and recruit the best.

If he is not in the running and Danny has other plans, he will be told when he and Danny talk about this opening at UT. If Danny says to hang around he will pass on us. If not he will dive into the discussions if he is truly interested. If other NBA teams come courting in the meantime, he will stop talking to us if he truly wants to stay in the NBA.

This will resolve itself shortly and we will know for sure. If he says yes to us, open the checkbook and let's go!

Thanks for clarifying. I still think the guy would be able to get an NBA job.

I was thinking the same thing about Stevens. Can he do it somewhere else? Maybe.
