Lawless not on campus, future uncertain

You grow up in a culture where half the males in your life are incarcerated or missing altogether and where getting good grades means you're selling out and see how easy it is. That’s the reality of the environments many of these recruits come from.

Sad but true.

Plenty of guys who come from that exact same situation you mention, or even worse, manage to do decent enough. And lets be honest here, we are talking about an athletic scholarship, not academic. I am not saying making honor role. I am talking about making just good enough to get into a decent school.

Ever see The Blind Side? There are a lot of Michael Oher’s out there that don’t have a rich family to pull them out of their dead end futures like he did.

Good grief, he was embarrassed by the answer and is a kid. He answered the best he could without personal details given the circumstances.

Cut him some slack and wish him luck in being able to handle his business.
Edit: And grades were mentioned as a concern during his recruitment, nothing scandalous.

Not a kid anymore! Time to put on big boy pants. Really sick of people referring to 300 lb 18 yr olds as kids. If you can vote, join the military, drive & go to a major football program then they are no longer KIDS!

This is my biggest pet peeve. I hate when coaches refer to their players as “kids”

Grades are a concern, but his senior film is a bigger one.

Since he signed, he counts against the 25 signees, that's already done. But if he enrolls, he would be the 25th new enrollee this calendar year, which would mean Tennessee could not take in another graduate transfer. It's complicated, but basically, there are two 25 limits each year. One is signees, the other is actual enrollees. You can get around the first number with blueshirts and some other roster management tricks. You can't get around the second number in any way.

So the staff, already concerned about his film and his grades, slow-played him around signing day, but ultimately sent him papers to sign. Now, they see a better option out there as a grad transfer, and while he is currently eligible to enroll in school, he still has not been ruled eligible to play or practice.

Thanks for the info. Just wished he hadn't signed and wasted that scholly for the '18 class. It sucks for Lawless but guess it's better in the long run.

That is shady.

It’s a business. I get that.

But if he’s eligible and they aren’t accepting him now after he passed on other schools.....that isn’t cool.

And there are a lot of people who pull themselves out of their situation rebardless of the circumstances. Is it easy? Absolutely not. But life is tough.

Easy to mouth off that way when you have certain advantages and privileges. Not when in an environment that impedes any chance of breaking free. Unless you've walked in their shoes, I mean really walked in them, the whole mile with the same obstacles, you're in no position to judge such people. Most of the lucky ones that made it, I guarantee you, they received a helping hand here and there that made it possible. Those that didn't, fall by the wayside due to society garbaging them. They get broken and stop trying. And yes, there's some who wantonly throw away opportunity and deserve garbaging. But they're not as many as frequently propandaized. I've seen this up close and personal. Managed to help a few along the way as well.

And you know this how?

Why do some many want to speculate without any real idea of what is going on--let's see how it plays out before jumping to any conclusions.

Just my :twocents: just like yours. Been around athletics enough to know when a guy is hedging on a commitment.

Umm, if that’s true, it’s a nasty black eye for Pruitt IMO.

Why?

Grade concerns, playing ability concerns, still hasn’t been cleared to enroll at Tennessee.

The ability to play at Tennessee, to be given a free education and all the tremendous perks an athlete is given is a privilege, it’s an honor.....and unlike the other kids already on, or currently reporting to campus, Brant hasn’t upheld his end of the bargain. This ain’t no charity, Pruitt is paid handsomely, he has a job to do and he’s taking it very seriously, like I’m sure most all Vol fans want him to.

If Brant hasn’t handled his schoolwork as expected and if Brant isn’t the best on-field option for Tennessee, then there’s an issue. I trust Pruitt and Fulmer to handle it accordingly for the good of the program.

Sorry - when I read DP's post, I missed that his grades were still an issue. To clarify my stance, going as far as giving a high school kid the papers to sign and then basically taking his spot away well after signing day because you later determined you had a better option is what I would take issue with. If he's not eligible academically, then yeah, we need to go in a different direction.

Then we agree, no worries.

Kid has to uphold his end of the bargain, like all the others have who are already on campus and working hard. And if he doesn’t have the mentality to handle his business....AND the coaches had/have some reservations about how good he is on the field?......
