What’s with this whole “SEC Caliber” and “SEC Speed/Size” BS that you guys keep referring to when comparing an opposing team’s roster or comparing matchups? It either shows delusion or stupidity on your part.
No. It isn't. Not just the NFL draft but the guys who actually make careers is a really good measure of the talent a given conference has over time. As of 2015, 309 SEC alums were on an NFL roster. The ACC was a distant 2nd with 239 followed by the Big Ten with 224 and the Pac12 at 220. The Big 12 was a VERY distant 5th out of the Power 5 conferences with 132. So yeah, you play 1 or 2 or in a tough year 3 teams with SEC level talent. That's considerably different from playing that caliber of talent 9 or 10 times in your typical season. In terms of NFL players per school by conference, the SEC has 22.1 while the Big12 is still last among Power 5 conferences with 13.2.
Just in case you didn’t realize, we have played games against Georgia, Auburn (home and away), LSU (home and away), Mississippi State (home and away), Alabama, Missouri, and Texas AM since 2005. You make our 11th SEC opponent since then. We’re pretty familiar with the SEC and have had some reasonable success against a few of those conference opponents during that time frame.
You beat a 4-8 Mizzou team. You beat a 5-7 Auburn team and a 3-9 Miss St team. Your one true quality win was in 2005 vs UGA. I'm pretty sure those players no longer have eligibility left. If I counted right, you are 2-4 overall vs SEC teams that finished with a winning record. The last time WVU beat an SEC team that finished with a winning record was 2007 vs MSU.
More relevant, you are 1-2 in the last 4 years vs the SEC with the only win coming against 4-8 Mizzou and losses to Bama and TAM.
No wonder you tried to skim over the details of such an
impressive record of experience vs the SEC.
Here’s the kicker though, aside from a couple of really bad Mississippi State and Missouri teams we’ve come across, you guys are one of the worst SEC teams we will have seen.
Here's the real kicker. You and several others have answered legitimate critiques of your team in relative detail with reminders of how bad UT was last year under a now fired HC who really should have never been hired. Good recruiter. Failed at pretty much everything else football related. Why not deal with the fact that WVU isn't the greatest team UT will face this year much less any longer time period... they aren't second either... or third... probably not 4th or 5th.
Your 4-8 and 0-9 record, plus what you have lost/returning shows that.
Does it? Have you actually looked into UT's roster as deeply as other Vol fans and I have WVU's? I've watched several WVU replays from last year BEFORE commenting on your team or players. Have you?
Does that mean we blow you out on Saturday? Not necessarily, but I like our chances. If you think we haven’t seen “SEC” style or “SEC” athletes then go tell that to a wall because I promise you that whatever you put on the field Saturday we have seen better in recent years in both the SEC and Big 12. I’m sure Pruett will get you where you want to be as a roster and as a program, but Saturday isn’t going to be it.
I'm not sure how far Pruitt has brought the team. Jones was bad. Very bad.
That said... when the two teams meet Saturday... UT will be bigger, stronger, faster, and more athletic in every position group except the starting QB's and that isn't as far off as you might want to think. Grier's advantage is in his head... not his arm or legs... over Guarantano. You may win due to experience. You may win due to familiarity with your coach and system. You
will not win because on the whole you have better players... because you simply don't.
As far as the lost players are concerned... that probably should concern you the most. Virtually to the man, recent Vols who have been drafted or taken as UFA's have played better than expected based on their performance under Butch Jones. Emmanuel Mosley makes a really good case study. He had all the physical tools. People here (especially the diehard Jones defenders) called him trash... said he had no talent... etc. He's played well in the 49er's camp and has positioned himself to make their roster or another team. Alvin Kamara was Jones' back up to Jalen Hurd (now a Baylor WR)… what has he done in the NFL?
It has been a repeating pattern with Jones' players that their true potential is seen AFTER they stop playing for him.
Nate Peterman is another great example. He was awful... not bad but terrible under Jones. He went and played for Jim Chaney at Pitt then got drafted. He's now competing to be an NFL starter.
These guys are the fortunate ones. Many others had their careers cut short with injuries due in large part to Jones' idiotic ideas about development, technique, and S&C.
Long story short... You should educate yourself about that "lack of talent" you think UT has.
