Definitely not taking it out the kid. I'm not anyways. I'm just hoping the coaching staff isn't just taking whoever will come without waiting on some of the bigger names that could commit. I'm sure they are saving enough spots for the big name guys they believe they have a legit shot at. I am hoping they are anyways. Would hate to miss out on a linemen like James Stone, Damien Robinson, Chaz Green, John Cullen etc. because all of the spots are filled.

We have no chance to get Green or Cullen. Cullen never took the math class he needed to get in an SEC school, and Green won't even answer phone calls from the coaches.

Don't get so caught up in rankings and evaluations from recruting services. Read this story from Pat Forde at ESPN.com for a little perspective and trust the coaches as evaluators.

great article -- thanks!

re the programs that had the top 25 classes in 06:

USC had the No. 2 class and just finished its worst season since 2001. Georgia was No. 4 and performed so poorly that Mark Richt had to shake up his staff and has himself edged toward the hot seat. Notre Dame was No. 5 and fired its coach. Florida State was No. 6 and got its legendary coach pushed into retirement.

Among the programs I didn't see in that top 25: Boise State (14-0), Cincinnati (12-1), TCU (12-1).

also noted is that a guy named garcon was passed over by the big schools, but has ended up being a favorite target of peyton manning.

I really don't. He recruited for Saban while Saban was rising. Thompson recruited for Saban and the last staff. These guys know what SEC talent looks like and what SEC potential looks like.

I think it is true that they are taking some risks on guys who are "under the radar" types... sure. But that's what you have to do when you take a job less than 3 weeks from NSD.

These guys are taking commits from kids who will literally make or break their careers. Would you take guys you knew were "LA Tech" talents in their shoes if you knew the difference? Neither would they.

Great post, I could'nt agree more, this whole staff knows what it takes recruiting wise. They will get their fair share of good, and great talent year in and year out. This year should have been a complete loss recruiting wise, but thanks to the EE's and Dooley, and staffs smooth talking it is easily top 10

They lined him up in a lot of positions but mostly they lined him up a DE but he is kinda small for that. I`ve seen him listed both as a LB and a DE. He has good closing speed in pass rush and a nose for the ball from his film. He also has good hands (getting off blocks).
Let's see too short for DE? Who are you? Dwight Freeny 6'2", Lawrence Taylor 6' 2 " this kid is the same size. Seems to have a great charater for being an eagle scout. Now 1 yr to have the blood transfusion into orange and 30 lbs muscle and watch out. This kid is going to be great. Reggie White type of kid..

I am drinking the Doolaid don't get me wrong but is anyone else worried we are getting stuck with LA Tech talent at a top tier SEC school? I know CDD can coach em up and the staff knows what they are doing. I just hope we aren't taking fliers on guys just to fill a class. We have had some strong commits since Dooley came on (Hunter, Loften, Neal). But then we get guys like this.

Have we not moved up consistently in recruiting rankings since Dooley has been HC? Aren't we at 7th in the nation right now only one spot lower than where we were when Kiffin left? I wouldn't say La Tech type talent would make the recruiting class that dropped down from 6th to 19th and jump us back up to the Top 10 at 7th.

I am not going to be a sheep and blindly follow every decision made by a coaching staff of a team I pull for. I wasn't crazy about X's mouth, but I still loved UT. I wasn't thrilled with CPF and our slip into mediocrity, but I still loved UT. I may not like every recruiting decision made by the current staff, but I will still love UT. I have a right to have an opinion on recruiting and I realize I may be wrong at times. Citing the virtues of an Eagle Scout doesn't give me great insight into his ability. And EVERY player can find clips that look good on film. I just don't want us to lose a quality player because we are out of scholarships for non-ranked players. And let's be honest, if he was THAT great, SOMEBODY in the SEC would have been all over him by now.

Eagle Scout is something that is earned. It is not handed out like candy. The award has lost prestige because of our but the standards remain the same. The award are indicators of leadership, teamwork, integrity, character among many others. With 90% confidence, he probably will not own a gun unless he is a hunter. He will not be robbing many stores or people, he probably will not be doping it up during the season. He will more than likely leading his teammates in many ways. It was worth noting that being an Eagle Scout says something about his character and the type of recruit we were getting in the newest of eras. No it does not make him a better football player, that is the coaches job. Evidently they believe they have a plan for him and he can play IN the SEC. Eagle Scout is a bonus.

I was not thrill at his tape. Yes a highlight reel but because of quality of tape distance and not knowing exactly what 2A level of play is in Alabama I might have passed him up also.

Lance Thompson did not. Good enough for me. And FWISW according to Rivals we,UT, have not accepted his offer yet. So this threat maybe much to do about nothing.

I would rather have a kid who wants to be here than worry about stealing a high profile player from another school. We saw how good stealing Richardson worked out for us. The kid had no heart to be here. I am not saying this kid will ever see the field or play a down. Atleast we wont have the drama associated with the high profile player that doesn't want to be here.

I like this recruit because it appears he can play and the team he wanted (Bama) spurned him. He'll play like a man possessed against the Tide.

This very well may turn out to be an interesting pick. It shows me that some of these coaches (I guess Lance) is getting some guys that others are missing. I like it when coaches are doing some research work for themselves rather than letting someone else do it and trusting they know what they are talking about.

Actually rivals has him as a no stars! The four stars your seeing are user ratings of 18 people who have rated him.

With all that being said Welcome to Volnation Mr Crump get ready to sing a little Rocky Top!

You'd have to think we'll be taking some guys just to fill out the class. With the situation the way it was when Dooley came in, he really didn't have chance with a bunch of highly rated guys. You never know how good someone is going to be until they hit the field, until then, stars and ratings mean nothing, IMO. How many 5 star busts did we have under Fulmer? Way too many. This class is going to have to have some guys that other people passed on. Remember, we had under 60 scholarship players at the end of last year, when most teams have between 80 and 85. I hope Dooley keeps doing the incredible job he has been.

We have moved ahead of USC and Georgia in the latest Rivals rankings! Yeah!!!!!!

I hope Dooley keeps it going. Ambles or Rogers would be huge for this class! Also, a solid commit from Stone would move us up too

Cool your jets. Nothing I said was in any way derrogatory. Like it don`t like it I`m as entitled to my opinion as you are. Mine is not founded on emotion. I don`t have anything against any kid comming to UT or wanting to... I did both pro and con. Simple as that.

He is an Eagle Scout. That means something. Earned it and committed. Don't know the coach but they know and if Thompson says he can cut it. Ratings make no difference at this point.

I agree im an eagle scout...you gotta be a hard worker and really want it...i saw a lot of better guys quit just because they didn't wanna try. this does mean something..if he is as dedicated to football then he will be something special

I would really have to smile if we finished ahead of USC. That would be funny.

If need be we could always move Nance. 6'3" 200lbs with speed and will only get bigger/faster once he moves to a college weight program. If he'd been an EE i'd say he could've had a chance to start and olb/qb this coming season.

had offers from Alabama A&M, Arkansas State and Tuskegee before the Vols came along.

From another thread. I guess CLT and CDD are seeing something that CNS, CUM, CMR, CGC, etc etc etc missed. I feel better now.

So just because those schools didn't go after the kid means we shouldn't? Your entire roster is not gonna be 3-5* kids. You are gonna give some 2* kids a chance if they show ability. You should stay with your main hobby of waving flags at the dirt track in Woodstock and leave the talent evaluating to the coaches.

And will all due respect to my fellow VN members, if Alabama, Florida, or UGA had signed this kid...we all would have been laughing and wondering WTH?? So don't get all "I trust CLT and CDD" and "he's an eagle scout so it's ok" with me. We ALL know we would have ridiculed this signing if it had been at one of our rivals.

It is apparent you have issues with reasoning and reality. Possible control issues or letting go.
