I know everyone is ready for the big game Saturday but did you catch last nights game?

We looked amazing at times last night but then there were times we looked like crap.

Do you think J.P. Prince will help the vols during scoring droughts?

Are the droughts caused by a lack of chemistry?

50 3 point shots might have something to do with why we looked like crap.

But I'm sure some will sum it up as great coaching because Pearl wanted everyone to jack up 3's all night because he knew he wasn't in fear of losing to NC A&T and just wanted the guys to try and find their range.

JP Prince was average at Arizona from what I've heard from the two huge Zona' fans I know, one of which lives out there and goes to many of their games. Some of that might have been because he really didn't want to be there or whatever, but who knows.

I think he'll end up being a good player, but it's hard to tell because he doesn't really have much experience to look at unless you go back to high school.

I think that for Lofton, he did have free reign to find his shot. However, there's no reason for Howell to be jacking up threes from all over the place.

Price, from what i've hear was very sick while at Arizona, so he didn't get to contribute much.

They raved about him on the tv broadcast last night. The announcers said that the players and coaches can't say enough about what is doing in practice. I saw him play in H.S. and was impressed, but haven't seen him in a few years. Gotta think that as a 6'8" point guard he'll immediately cause some matchup problems.

Howell is actually a good shooter. If he's open I'd let him jack it up as well. I watched the game last night, we made some very bad decisions as far as passes are concerned. Throwing the ball into traffic is never a good thing. It just got sloppy, I'm ready to get into conf. play. I just hope we can get a leader of this team

This team just needs to jell together and everyone find their role.

We need to get Lofton the ball as much as possible on Offense. The guys inside need to finish. Way to many 3 and 4 foot layups blown. Gotta have better play from the point. You can't have missed free throws and turn the ball over alot from your point guard.

They haven't found their identity yet. And they haven't shot well. I think being out of Tompson Boiling may have a little to do with that. But we will see what happens. Bruce will have them playing well before SEC schedule gets here.

They showed the football team talking to the crowd at the half. What all did they say? Was it the normal this are our senior leaders, and we are going to ATL and are going to beat the tigers and bring back a championship?

The team is virtually identical as last years team but with an upgrade in Tyler Smith from Dane Bradshaw.

I'm confused as to how they don't have an identity or need to gel. They lost one player that saw minutes. haha

Duke Crews has had some crazy blocks so far. I still think he doesn't have a lot of skill on offense but I think he could be a Ben Wallace type with a little better offense for this team.

If they play this season like the played last night we will lose several games. How many jumpers outside the paint and inside the arc did we take? 0?

Yeah, Jordan Howell's career field goal percentage just screams "good shooter." He is, has been, and always will be a brick layer.

I guess Tyler Smith, Tatum, Williams, Prince played last year. I missed those games. Huh?

How many times did you hear Bruce Pearl talk about how much Bradshaw meant to this team? Well I heard him say it a few times I believe.

This is a different team. You add four new guys and lose Bradshaw = Different Team.

I wouldn't read too much into last nights game. It was basically a pickup game with no fear of losing.

I didn't see the whole thing, but it was nice to see Lofton get his shot back.

You can't just say, "We're not going to lose, so let's just go out and play."

That's really a dumb sentiment, and I guarantee you that is not what Pearl was thinking.

We need to fix a lot on the court and not against each other. If Pearl really did let them just play then he shouldn't be out there on the sideline. We need to improve in a ton of areas, and it didn't look like we were doing anything to work on our transition defense, our press, our halfcourt sets, or just about anything else.

50 3-pt shots is ridiculous and should never happen. The team looked really bad last night, and has not improved since Saturday.

Since everybody else is giving their take, I'll throw in my 2 cents:

1. 50 3-pt shots IS ridiculous, but not if you make 22 of them. And we probably should have ... as most of the shots taken were open. But Howell went 2-10 and J. Smith went 1-9 -- and that's how we get to looking like a bunch of bricklayers.
2. We caused a lot of turnovers last night (29). Lofton had 5 steals; T. Smith and Tabb had 4 each. Pretty impressive.
3. What wasn't impressive was how many times we got back-doored last night. Good Lord .. that should never happen on this team. One thing this team should be able to pride itself in is its athleticism and hustle. Getting back-doored is a sign of laziness and lack of focus.
4. Our passing (especially in the second half) in transition was horrendous. There was a stretch where they looked like they'd never been pressed before.
5. I thought our ball movement was much improved, and I was impressed with T. Smith's ability to penetrate.
6. T. Smith needs to freakin' shoot more -- especially when he gets down low. He's being too unselfish at times.
7. Could Crews go up strong for once? I think he's afraid to go up like a man.
8. We miss Chilly. When Chilly gets back, SPearl gets to stay on the bench and we get some much-needed hustle inside.
9. I'd like to see Wayne inside rebounding when we're shooting 3s, as opposed to standing around outside waiting for somebody to pass him the ball.
10. Cameron Tatum's line: 4-6 FGs (both misses 3s), 1-2 FTs, 9 Pts, 3 Rebs, 1 Steal, 1 Block ... SIX MINUTES.
11. B-dub looks a little lost sometimes, but plays pretty good for a freshman. Nice rebounder and passer.

Are we where we need to be in March? Nope. But it's not March. I'm not really worried. We look pretty disorganized sometimes -- like we're trying to find our way or something. But hey ... we're 6-1 and we beat a team yesterday by 34 on a bad shooting night. Let's get worried in January if we haven't shown improvement.

Learning to defend the layup would be a good thing for this team, based on the last 2 games performance.

Good points, all BTW..
We'll gel and be a force to contend with come conference and tournament play.

Is jp prince really a point guard?
whenever they do that spotlight on him and he talks about it he says he is, but will he run point any? just curious

last night's game was a scrimmage...let's not compare their style of play from that game up with how they will be playing in conference.

Agreed. I understand that Ramar needed to feel some pain after the 0-12 FT performance, but I'm certainly hoping that the Jordan Howell as our starting PG experiment is over. Ramar is just so much more talented. Jordan's a better 3-point shooter, but not a great one by any means. He's just not quick enough to defend effectively against an SEC-caliber opposing point guard. Now, that being said, I'm more than fine with him getting some significant minutes off the bench when Ramar needs a blow, but... seriously... a starter? No.

My further two cents: the unsung player who is going to help us more than most people realize - Josh Tabb. He's not a great offensive threat, but he plays excellent defense, which is something that's definitely lacking on this team.

Pearl said Tabb's going to get more minutes.

I heard that, too. He definitely should get more. I'd hate to have Tabb guarding me -- he aggravates the guy he's defending to no end. I'd probably just go stand in the corner until Pearl decided it wasn't worth putting a good defender like Tabb on somebody who's just going to stand around :)

So you have the option of one who cannot play D and one who will not play D. Neither very good options. Ramar is the better offensive option IMO because he can break down Ds, but his shooting makes Howell look like the second coming of Rick Barry.
