Larry Scott = Tee Martin?

I really enjoy your positive outlook

It makes selecting Scott, since he has never served as a OC, a leap of faith. But then again, you can take the most experienced OC, add him to your program, and he can still fail.

The only real constant is guys like Dudley will criticize the hire, and have a 50-50 shot at bragging about being right. And if they are wrong, they either vanish or develop amnesia.

Think about it. Tee had never called a play before he took over OC duties at USC and look at how successful he was in his first year. I'm not shouting hooray at the Larry Scott hire, but he could end up being our Tee Martin.

Butch, Scott, and Canales OC by committee Jones is chairman.

Not a lot to clean up the offense wasn't broke...

1. We have to call qb runs and teach JG...yes JG when to pull it in and take off.
2. Use the tighends...lots of mismatches with our personnel there
3. Let's run our backs more consistently...tired of watching Kelly run for 50 yards and then he disappears for the following quarter.

Other than that as is would be amazing.

Helton is an offensive guy and is still very much involved in play calling at USC.

this. and Scott basically said this in his presser yesterday. it's been said of the offensive staff in the past too, and Scott alluded to that many times again yesterday.

the offense is very much collaborative in both game planning and play calling.

i think all the hand wringing over who's going to do what, and comparing him to this or that, and even the style of play, is a little over anxious. personally, i'm not a huge fan of the whatever kind of spread it is we run. but, it has proven to be effective, when run correctly, and run tailored to what your personnel does well. again, something else Scott alluded to yesterday.

all in all, i think the offense can continue to get better. i have no idea if Canales will work out, but he does have a lot more experience than Sheridan, and he's coached on the offensive side of the ball forever. he may not wind up being a qb whisperer, but i can't imagine that there's not something he can bring to the table and add some value. (i would still rather have had Weinke mind you).

the biggest issue with the offense last year was execution. and maybe some reliance on some things that just never proved to be reliable.

past that, the game plans in large part weren't an issue, neither was play calling.

decrease mental errors, penalties, turnovers etc....and this offense really is ok.

the next biggest thing is the O line. we have an opportunity from a personnel standpoint to actually be pretty darn good there. i'm anxious to see what kind of difference s&c can make, and what, if any, changes are made with Mahoney, or how the changes that have been made affect how Mahoney teaches and develops what should be the best O LINE we've since 2013.

Like i always say we are a 8 win program most years been fan 48 years take Phil's run out and do the math we are what you see a 8 win team most years like you say the truth is the truth and the truth hurts sometimes, we wont spent the money to be elite i don't know why but we won't.:eek:hmy:

Texas spends the money to be elite and look how that is working for them. Every SEC team pumps tons of money into their program, this is why all coaching salaries are sky rocketing. There are some coordinators making more than SEC head coaches 10 years ago. When Bama hired Saban they spent top dollar...and got their 2nd choice. Funny to think what the CFB world would look like now if Rich Rod had taken the Bama job instead of the Michigan one.

Just for reference on what a "top coach" costs. This season LSU tried to hire Jimbo Fisher, one of the 4 (now 5) active P5 head coaches with a national championship. Details were leaked and Fisher was asking for a minimum 10 year $6 million per year deal.

A guaranteed $60 million contract for a coach that went 10-3, 5-3 in conference. That record included a win over an ok OOC opponent to start the season. A loss to a team playing in the national championship, a blowout loss to a kinda good team, a loss to a not good team, a big win over UF, and a bowl win over a B1G team. Sound familiar?

It would be great if Tennessee could get that lucky.
This is Tennessee though so when it hits the fan it'll blow all over everything and expectations will be missed, again.

you should go and follow another team and stop being so negative so much. its a free country you can follow any team you want so go find you one that you wont be so negative about.

Anybody else find the phrase "Scott will be our Tee Martin" at least partially ironic.

Freak, could we please have a DOUBLE SECRET IGNORE button. I have guys like Dudley 87 on the current regular ignore, but then people quote them and I have to read what they said anyway.

Oh, I don't have to read what they said anyway? Show some inner strength? If I had that I wouldn't have put them on ignore in the first place. It's a real quandary.

It's not rocket science / it's football.

I wouldnt take bill bellicheck over anyone involved the nfl as a player but i would take bellicheck over anyone in the world as an nfl coach. Also our current coach played the trumpet in college so that hurts your narrative.

Hopefully Scott knows how to call throws past the sticks on 3rd down. That was my main complaint last season. That and Hurd up the middle for no gain every 1st down

You do know Hurd up the middle was a necessary call. Anyone calling an offensive game MUST try up the middle several times on 1st down. Not always of course but regularly to keep the gaps honest. And as far as third down throws short of the 1st down marker it's usually a progression read and the last option. Usually... and if not the receiver didn't know where he was on the field.

Most of those 48 years they only played 10 regular season games (or less) a season, so we should be winning 80% of our games.

So in a 12 game season we should be winning 9.6 games a year on average.

So the norm should be 10 win seasons most years.

Agree OC can only call the plays in players have to execute.

I have no concerns about Scott. In fact, I have fewer concerns with Scott than I did with DeBord (and look how that turned out).

Scott's resume speaks for itself. By the time you've been a football coach for as long as he has, you understand the game. With one year in the program, he understands the system and the offensive philosophy.

I would rather have an experienced line coach than anything else, because everything you need to be successful starts up front.

If he wasn't capable, then Butch wouldn't risk his own career by choosing Scott for the job. He'll be fine.

Don't have a problem with giving Scott a chance. Plus he is out number 1 recruiting coach for Florida area. So that can't be bad.

Canales should be nowhere near the play book IMO, needs to stick to QB duties
Maybe I'm just missing your point, but your statement doesn't make sense to me.

There's so much more to coaching the QB position than developing and practicing QB footwork, throwing mechanics, timing, etc.

Knowing the playbook inside out is huge.

A college QB has to know not only his own role in the play, but also everyone else's. He has to also be able to read pass rush/blitz and pass coverage schemes (pre & post-snap) and call blocking schemes, route trees, progression adjustments, hot routes, play checkoffs, etc. accordingly.

Canales and his QBs have to not only know UT's playbook like the back of their hand, they also to apply it in live games vs various opposing defensive schemes and tendencies.

Fortunately, Canales is a veteran offensive coach with a wealth of knowledge and experience far beyond just coaching QB fundamentals and practice drills.
