From yesterday's luncheon Q/A with fans...

Kiffin offered a reminder of his own experiences with a pair of quarterbacks at Southern California who had their doubters as well.

"We don't think that way," Kiffin said. "We don't listen to any negativity. We don't listen to anything that will do anything except set a guy's bar extremely high. One of these guys is going to be a great player for us next year."

Kiffin did urge patience as quarterbacks Jonathan Crompton, Nick Stephens and B.J. Coleman begin learning a new offense.

"I think it's similar to when I was hired and I discussed the coaching staff. I told everybody to be patient and we're going to do this thing right, not fast," Kiffin said. "It's the same thing with the quarterbacks. Be patient in this and don't make judgements on these kids. Everybody wants to say, 'Well, they haven't played well before' or 'They can't play' or 'They're not smart enough' or 'They don't have a big enough arm.' Hold on. We haven't coached them for one day in our system. Let's give them a chance, let's see what they do."

We are a team with weaknesses. I know this. But I cannot escape the feeling that this staff is capable of coaching the Volunteers into vast improvement from the season we just endured...

That really is going to be the key to the season. Will a true starting QB emerge? Can someone regain the confidence of the team? Can someone make some 3rd and 6 throws or scrambles? Can someone protect the ball? Can someone hit open WR's or backs out on the flat? That's all that's needed but for the most part none of our QB's said yes to any of those questions last year. Hopefully they were just lost in the Slawfense!

Personally I would like to see Stephens named the starter. He just has a certain fire about him that I like at that position. Crompton plays scared and I haven't seen enough of BJ to tell.

If they would show more heart and effort than they did last year, that will be an upgrade. We're going to be stronger and in better shape by the looks of it, so the bar has already been raised. I like the attitude so far, it can only be a positive.

BJ is the natural leader. If Lane and Chaney are the QB makers their resumes say they are, Coleman should rise to the top.

But I'm from Chattanooga.... so what do I know...:whistling:

Let's hope he stays *on* his QBs. Someone will emerge as a much better player than it seemed last season, I can almost guarantee that.

I keep hearing about his leadership. That's great and all but it doesn't make you a good QB.

he also discussed Palmer/Leinart and said the fans were trashing them before they took over too. Palmer threw too many bad balls, int's, etc. and Leinart's arm was too weak for CFB.

I believe the most intelligent and thought provoking posters on this board are from Chattanooga, but what do I know?:salute:

I like that Lane stood up for his QB's in public. That has to give them confidence going into spring practice.

1. Obvious but needs to be stated. Lane interviewed other places, but I think he coveted the UT job.
2. He wanted the job because he saw opportunity for immediate improvement. In other words, I don't think he would have pursued the job as he did unless he thought he could win right away.

If Chaney and Kiffin can turn any of our QB's into a Leinart or Carson Palmer type of player, then they deserve COY for performing such a miracle.

It's my nature to believe the best about the unknown. Kiffin's incredibly strong comments in SI about wanting to win now were fuel to the fire for me.

But.

Logic commands patience, and accepting that time may be required. I think we could be quite good quickly. But if we are not I'm not going to go ballistic...

3. He certainly wouldn't have gotten Monte or Coach O to come to any of the other available jobs at the time. Auburn didn't open up until after he was hired at UT.

No Question OWH.
There is also no question that we had talent on the bench/and or underutilized offensive weapons last year. Without going into the exact reasons that it went unused/underutilized, the remaining question is how much is actually there.

If the OL can be propped up and execute, I think we'll see there are plenty of weapons...

Tennessee seems to have made a great hire. I just feel confident, simply because the coaches sound confident. That's a big improvement to how I have felt in off-seasons past. I hope it translates to W's next year.

I for one believe that UT's QB play this year will be much better than last year. A complete 180. This team of coaches can coach and the QB's do have talent. Don't be surprised if Crompton comes out of this looking like a solid QB. Also, don't be surprised if they go with BJ and he keeps the job for the next three years.

Maybe he can bring one of them around. Cut thought that BJ had talent and was smart. He never got a real chance with PF. The bench was full last year and very few ever saw playing time even when it was a lost cause. Experience is not gained on the bench and playing time motivates the players to do well. I am excited about what will happen in the fall....It is time.

I'd be ecstatic if either Crompton played like the 5* he was coming out of HS or BJ plays like the 4* he was. Heck, even if Stephens plays up to his 3* rating it will be a signifcant improvement over last year.

I have to say I'm pretty optimistic about Coleman or Stephens being able to be molded in to a decent QB. I'm not expecting miracles by any means. God knows Ainge wasn't awesome, but he was able to make a considerable improvement over a years time, so I see no reason to think one of these two can't give us a decent season. Then in 2010 we can hopefully bring in the best of the best and start taking names. That's just my hope.

From what I saw last year there are some bright spots and some geez spots. Last years O-line needs IMO a little restructuring/re-positioning...but mostly it needs to be worked very, very hard. So hard in fact they'll be so pissed on a general basis they will be glad to blow d lines off the ball. An attitude adjustment is in order....via sweat and abuse...many players play their best football about HALF pissed off.

I'm fairly certain conditioning will no longer be an issue...
