Does anyone know how Butch Davis recruiting efforts are going compared to CLK's? The only reason I ask is bc half of this forum wanted him instead of kiffin and were pointing out CBD's recruiting was top notch.

As I wrote in one of the recruiting threads, I live about 20 miles from Chapel Hill and I have a couple of kids that I coached who are playing for Butch. His recruiting efforts have paled in comparison to CLK. I think most of the "blame" for CLK out recruiting CBD is Ed and Monte.
There are several coaching issues that UNC will have to deal with before they will be successful. Some changes will /have to be made in the offseason at UNC before they can win consistently. I will take LK hands down.

Davis may be a decent recruiter, but he just isn't that good of a game day coach.

BD is also trying to recruit kids to come to a middle of the pack ACC school that is always going to be a basketball school. If a kid wants to play big time football I don't UNC is going to be where he is looking.

North Carolina is currently ranked 35th in the country according to Rivals and we are ranked 6th. They have 11 commitments while we have 21. Butch has done well in recruiting the past 3 years, certainly better than Phil but he is recruiting a lot of the same kids that we are. Our program, our head coach, our staff, our team are currently very, very hot. I always wanted Kiffin over Davis because I thought he and his staff could recruit better. With so few people and players in state, Tennessee lives and dies by how well it can recruit the border states, Florida, and now California. We are extremely well coached as well, even more so than I had hoped for. If we can keep this staff intact something special is happening right before our eyes.
Fear the ORANGE.

Easier to recruit at Tennessee than UNC...Much easier...Can't compare the two

I wasn't particularly sold on BD during the hiring process. He was only a couple of years younger then Fulmer and I thought since we were getting a new coach, might as well get a young, more energetic coach. Man.......little did I know.....

I definitely think we got the better deal. Davis is a good coach, good recruiter, excellent evaluator of talent, but he is no spring chicken. Noticed I didn't say a great recruiter. How hard is it to recruit Miami? You really have to be a below average coach not to have a ton of talent at Miami. We needed a younger guy to give us a shot of energy. You are seeing that on and off the field. I still don't know if CLK will make "all the right moves" in close games but he will have as much or more talent than Fulmer did in the glory years.

Agreed. Losing Tommy Thigpen to Auburn really hurt the recruiting efforts at UNC. He was a top notch recruiter for them.

the difference is ...they don't have eddie gran the south florida leprecahn and his bag of gold :)

You hit the nail on the head. I think CLK's decision to invest more money into his staff rather than his bank account will pay off in a big way.

TN is THE place to go. It is smack down U and Kiffin is the Chancellor. We get what we want and give left overs to Oscar Meyer and Dick Satin.

Lets be direct. Butch Davis held on to one recruit we wanted. A recruit who is arguably second best in his class was turned down by TN because the staff liked other guys more.
TJ Leifheit was being recruited hard by both, he came to UT and wanted to come out of North Carolina to our school and we said no thanks.

Kiffin will build a dynasty here and everyone will love Mike Hamilton as much as I do. This is also the right segue to say that the man did not lie. He never wanted the black jerseys and neither did the rich boosters but he relented because it was a night game on Halloween and Eric Berry and Kiffin wanted it.

If the roles were reversed, I think Davis would be doing well at UT and Kiffin not as well at UNC. Kiffin has a much better overall staff, especially with regard to recruiting. So, while I do think it's hard to compare them, I would go with Kiffin due to his youth and ability to put a stellar staff together.

I also live very close to Chapel Hill and have watched Butch's UNC teams for 3 years now and have not been impressed. I said the same thing on here this time last year and being ridiculed by quite a few people. UNC's offense is terrible, the Defense is fast, but was exposed by FSU, in year 3 Butch should be doing much more (1-3) in what is a pathetic football conference. I am looking forward to being in Chapel Hll this weekend to watch Duke beat the Tarholes. I feel very lucky that we have CLK instead of Butch Davis.
