Lane Kiffin (Head football coach of the University of Tennessee)

I thought Richt was special because of FSU's sucess but not Meyer. I definately didn't see Meyer's sucess coming as easily as it has, but that is only due to getting Tebow.

Richt beat us his 1st or 2nd year as HC if i do recall it was a last second shocker. Georgia has established themselves as a legitimate powerhouse due to their offensive explosivness because of Richt.

Meyer has maintained the program maybe built it somewhat but not much. Much like I believe Saban to be living off Shula's boys. Time will tell.

Remember Shula almost had Tebow, meyer got him by default because he was a Florida boy as were his family ties.

I wish we could get Mike Shula instead of Kiffin

You sir are so misguided I am not sure there is any hope for you. First of all Saban would use Shula for a water boy when it comes to coaching and recruiting. Do yourself a favor and look at Saban's coaching career. Next go and look at Urban Meyer, the guy turned 2 programs around in 4 years. Tebow would have failed at Bama, their offense does not fit him MO.

NONO Pete Carrol brought in STUDS. LIKE I SAID I HOPE THEY PROVE ME WRONG,I hope he does well i'm not knocking him IDIOTS just asking what HAS he done!!

Most people did not think Coach Pearl was the right hire, look at how many were wrong on that one. If Kiffin is our man, the best thing we can do is to rally around him and support him. Give him a few years before we form an opinion on his abilities, I know Chris Mortenson of ESPN/NFL Analyst/Commentator thinks he is a star just waiting to shine. I can't think of many people on here that has been around football in the limelight as he has been.

I will rally around the new HC. But he needs to know that he's got two year two beat Florida, Alabama & Georgia.

And btw, he is not allowed to lose to Vandy, or KY. I will accept losses to Ole Miss and LSU.

Oh yeah and no more season opener loses to California teams.

What the F did CPF do before he got the job??? What had Bob Stoops done or Pete Carrol for that matter?

Give the guy a chance if by this time in 09 there is no improvment then you can complain.

Pete brought in the studs as opposed to Kiffin and Coach O. What do you base this opinion on. Especially since Pete has fired by the Pats and had lost face.

Sorry folks, but i just think with Kifin we are gonna have another Shula on our hands,I hope he proves me wrong but WHAT has he done? Every body keeps talking about how GREAT a recruiter he was at USC,BULL PETE CARROL and the name USC was and IS the recruiter out there! Just my thoughts.Like i said i hope they prove me wrong. GO BIG ORANGE!!!!!!

It is foolish to think Mike Shula is a bad coach.

Shula restored Alabama to prominence, not Saban. It's too bad more people don't realize that.

I would love to get Shula as our new coach.

If we get Kiffin, I hope that he is as good for UT as Shula was for Alabama.

Yes, one 10 win season.

You Bammers are so funny. Of course you would want us to take your mistake.

Well Kiffin is not my first choice but I don't think he's gonna be a bust like Shula. With that said, if he's the one hired then "hell yeah we got us a new coach!" I just hope that in his first season he and the new staff change the attitude in our players so they believe they are going to win. I wanna see a swagger in Tennessee football that has been lacking for far too long. So a message to Lane if he is the new HC:

"Welcome Lane, glad to see you are our new coach. Now get to work!" :)

And where did he prove himself as a head coach?

The criticism of Kiffin isn't his lack of head coach experience, it's his lack of experience in general. He was OC for only 2 years before he left to take the Raiders job. He took over as OC on a team that just won the NC. At UT he's taking over a team that just went 4-8 or 5-7.

I'm not saying he won't be successful, I'm saying his resume is a little weak when you compare it to the other names that have been mentioned.

I think that's fair.

It's a gamble on any coach, you might as well go after the guy that is going to assemble the all-star coaching staff and run with it.

I'd love for Butch Davis to be here but he said no.

Im no Bammer

You can't say that Shula was a mistake for them unless you are simply ignorant.
Shula did have that one 10 win season out of 4 but he was dealing with the sanction mess leftover while trying to rebuild. He lost to Auburn 4x that's why they fired him.

Shula built the vast majority of the currently ranked #1 team. Sure Saban added a few freshmen who are contributing but who recruited John Parker? Prothro , Arenas & coffee

Prothro hasn't played a down since what, 2005?

Who recruited Mclain, Hightower and Cody?

Coaching matters. Those guys, along with Ron Zook's guys, would all achieve mediocre results without Nick Saban and Urban Meyer.

I would have to disagree about how weak his resume is. He was in an NFL franchise in 2000. He grew up (literally from diapers) under the tutoring of a legend. He sat under a legend in Carroll. He was a part of building a modern dynasty. He has NFL head coachine experience. Even Carroll says that he's wise beyond his years.

I propose that he's more proven now than CPF was when he was offered head coaching duties.

As to what he's inheriting... He experience first-hand what it took to build USC from an also-ran to a modern dynasty. He has the proven recruiting skills and ties to get the talent to do it here. He learned coaching from the guy that did it there. He has the connections to bring in the supporting staff to do it. You'll have a hard time convincing me he's the wrong guy to give it a try.

We agree that he's not a guaranteed success. And I suspect we'll both be cheering him on if he actually is the guy given the job to try it.
