Lane Kiffin (Head football coach of the University of Tennessee)

Chris Mortensen (on Sportscenter) mentioned that Kiffen would have interest for UT and is the logical choice because of his roots in national recruting... which is a huge priority for UT as well.

On a side note, both Mortensen and Greenberg both mentioned UT as an "elite and premier" coaching position.

yes, tennessee is absolutely a premier program/coaching gig.

regardless of who comes in at head coach, what happens with chavis? we know what will happen if someone like muschamp comes in, but otherwise?

Chavis has said that he feels he is near the end of his coaching career, and that was before this weeks news.

Would L Kiffin bring his dad with him ? I just don't see anyone of significance keeping any reminders of Phil around (i.e Chavis, etc.)

still, would hate to lose chavis. look at all the defensive players we have sent to the pros over the last 15 years under him. pretty impressive

I agree, but after what happened at the Raiders, he'll almost definitely require the ability to hand-pick his own staff... which is very understandable.

The HFC should have cognizance of the entire team, to include the staff.

without a doubt lane kiffin could demand that power. but fulmer's asst coaches have buyouts as well

The guys at USC think that Lane Kiffin made a significant contribution to their recruiting and offensive efforts. According to his bio on usctrojans.com - University of Southern California Official Athletic Site - Default

"Lane Kiffin, the son of longtime pro and collegiate coach Monte Kiffin, is in his sixth year at USC. He joined the Trojan staff in February of 2001 and spent the 2001 season handling the tight ends. He became the wide receivers coach in 2002. In 2004, he took on the additional duty of passing game coordinator. In 2005, he was promoted to offensive coordinator and recruiting coordinator, in addition to continuing as the wide receivers coach.

In 2005, he was named one of the nation's Top 25 recruiters by Rivals.com. Wide receiver Dwayne Jarrett was an All-American first teamer and Biletnikoff Award finalist. Troy's offense was in the national Top 6 in every offensive category, including tops in total offense (579.8) and second in scoring offense (49.1), and set Pac-10 records for total offense yardage, first downs, points scored, touchdowns and PATs. The Trojans, who scored 50 points a school-record 7 times, won games by an average of 26.2 points. USC became the first school to have a 3,000-yard passer, a pair of 1,000-yard runners and a 1,000-yard receiver in a season.

In 2004, Jarrett was named a Freshman All-American first teamer. The Trojans won their second consecutive national championship.

Wide receiver Mike Williams was a consensus All-American first teamer and a finalist for the Biletnikoff Award in 2003 (he finished eighth in the Heisman Trophy balloting) as he set the USC career (30) and season (16) touchdown reception records, while fellow wide receiver Keary Colbert set the USC career reception record (207) and was a NFL second round pick. Troy won its first national championship since 1978.

In 2002, Williams was a Freshman All-American first teamer and the Pac-10 Freshman of the Year as he and Colbert became USC's first pair of 1,000-yard receivers. Also in 2002, wide receiver Kareem Kelly became the Trojan career reception leader and was a sixth round NFL draft pick. "

They also forgot to mention that Kiffin stole Patrick Turner, the rivals #1 receiver in the 2005 class, right out of Tennessee under our noses.

The timing of this all makes me think Hamilton really wants Kiffin. Kiffin said publicly last week that he was interested in the Washington job.

I have very serious reservations about Kiffin. His NFL record was what, 5-15? And he developed a reputation as a recruiter at USC? That's not exactly the middle of nowhere.

He got Dwayne Jarrett to come across the country. Patrick Turner and Mike Williams too.

The added bonus with Lane is his dad Monte. There would be no dropoff on the defensive side of the ball.

He had Oakland competitive before Davis fired him.

I have reservations about Kiffin too, but there are no candidates that I don't worry about. There are no reasonable sure things. If Lane brings daddy along, a lot of my reservations about him go out the window.

Make no mistake, it's not that I would be disappointed if we landed Kiffin. Far from it. I'm just nervous, but I guess that's to be expected when the man who has been at the top for 17 years is on his way out.

Kiffin --Muschamp --- Grobe

you have your picks of some great coaches you fellas will be ok -- Just do not come after Petrino or you boys will have to be handled..... hehe

Since everyone else is throwing out there opinion, I say we bring in Kiffin. Land him along with Norton and Steele and watch us roll. Maybe we bring Garner in as well. I'd love to have Cowher, Gruden, or Davis and I'm sure we may make a run at any or all of them but I just don't think we have the resources to pull the from their current positions.

If we're paying buyouts for all coaches across the board, we very well might not have the resources to bring in the "top tier names".

Since we're throwing all names out there I would love to see Al Wilson at LB Coach though.

I do agree on Lane Kiffin. He did pretty well considering he was at the worst HFC position in the NFL.

You're trying to say we can compete with the NFL and it's retirement? UNC will give Butch anything he wants to keep him there as well.

I just think we could get Norton because he and Kiffin are very tight. That would be a huge pickup. We might not be able to bring him in as just a LB coach though. Garner probably isn't an option either. I think we could pull Steele if we want, but we may have the option of only he or Norton if we get Kiffin.
