Lane Kiffin (Head football coach of the University of Tennessee)

Read some of the other posts in this thread. I am a Raider fan and can tell you that you CANNOT judge a coach by what he does in oakland. al davis meddles in player selection, coach selection, offensive and defensive philosophy, and probably play calling. Because he had inmates run the asylum 30 years ago and won with them, he thinks he can do it today. But he is saldy mistaken. I admire the man for all he has done for the pro game, but he's completely out of it nowadays. I am not advocating Kiffin for the job, but he would be a good guy to interview. nhe'd bring some youthfulness and enthusiasm. Hell, Maybe his dad will come down and be the DC in a couple of years. Eh? I'm just saying that 1-3 doesn't tell all of the story.

Comparing NFL and college records doesn't work. If the Raiders finished 8-8 this year, most people would think Kiffen did a great job. If(when) Fulmer goes 6-6, people will be angry. The Vols were ranked and should have enough talent to win more than half their games. The Raiders are a young team far from the top 1/3 of the NFL, and they don't have the luxury of playing cupcakes like UAB or NIU.

That point I was trying to make is that UT is as close to be 3-1 as the Raiders and if that were the case we would Kiffen have even been brought up. By the way I have the NFL package, I watch the Raiders and completely agree that they are improving.

5 Wins and 15 Losses......? Sure sounds like he has a killer offensive scheme going on, does it not?

Cooleyvol's comparison to Saban is interesting... Is Kiffin a liar?

I would.. He was awesome at USC.. and you started to see alot of potential in Oakland if it wasn't run by a complete mad man...

Not too many people could look bad with the talent that USC had around him. Lets see what he can do with subpar talent before he gets here.

talent alone wont make you win, just look at the years after 98 when we were loaded.

Guys, the guy is smart, young, hungry, and can recruit (see USC while he was there). We have an old, tired, worn out coach.
Plus, it was the freakin Raiders. They are a train wreck, grease fire, etc. He was making strides there, where the owner is completely gone mad.
You should hear the NFL analyst on NFL radio talk about Kiffin. They think the next team that lands him will be VERY happy.

supposedly Bruce Feldman was on Finnebaum and stated that Kiffin was interested in Tennessee.

I'm not keen on Kiffin. For one thing, he is VERY young. For another his record at oakland was bad. For another, Davis accused him yesterday of lying on multiple occasions in public comments. Davis has issues but I heard two newscasters yesterday say he's still fairly sharp, so this may raise character issues with Kiffin. I also wonder if Kiffin will like recruiting--I doubt he had to work too hard at it at usc, which pretty gets who it wants to get on the west coast/california, and he did no recruiting in the nfl of course. I would not have kiffin high on my list--though I do like the fact that he's propably got some football smarts, which are in short supply with Fulmer.

As a Ole Miss grad and a Tennessee fan, I would ask you to remember another USC coaching product: ED ORGERON. I should not have to say more.

As a lawyer I will say that much of Davis' comments yesterday seemed to be an attempt to lay out a defense for the impending lawsuit. He was basically trying to explain how he thinks he fired Kiffen for cause.

satan, had been HC at two major universities before running for the pro money... with a decent winning % at each school.

Exactly what I was thinking. I'm not sure how I feel about Kiffin one way or another, but my problem with the comparison to Saban's failure in the NFL is that Saban won a BCS championship while at a team in the SEC.

It's part of his "firing with cause" agenda. Al's lost his freaking mind, and has ruined the once mighty Raiders.

I went to High School with Kiffin at Jefferson in Minnesota where he was 2 years ahead of me and I graduated from UT in 2001. The guy knows football, especially offense and he would institute his father's Tampa 2 pro-style defense, which was actually the start of the rift with Davis. He may come across a bit arrogant at times, but all good coaches do, think Saban or Richt. And its proven that the guy can recruit--he was the head recruiter at USC for 3 straight classes ranked #1 in the nation. I think this would be the best hire the University of Tennessee could make. The program is stale, Fulmer and his staff have gown old and Kiffin's youth, energy and confidence would actually play well with the recruits--and in my humble opinion, that is where UT has fundamentally lost ground on other SEC programs.

I'm not picking on your post here but I always get a kick out of how people talk about "young, energetic coaches" and Saban in the same thought process since he is about 57 years old.

I guess my point is a coach doesn't have to be "young and energetic" to bring new life back to the UT football program.
