Kiffin could put a staff together with SEC ties

One of the names almost certainly to be on Tennessee's short list in its coaching search is former Oakland Raiders coach Lane Kiffin.

Kiffin
Clemson and Washington are also possibilities for the 33-year-old Kiffin.

One of the attractions with Kiffin is that he would likely bring his father, Monte, with him. The elder Kiffin is the defensive coordinator for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and one of the most respected defensive minds in all of football.

The rest of Kiffin's staff could have a distinctive SEC feel to it. He and former Ole Miss coach Ed Orgeron worked together when Kiffin was the offensive coordinator at Southern California, and Kiffin would almost certainly try to bring Orgeron with him as a defensive assistant and recruiting coordinator. Orgeron is now on the New Orleans Saints staff.

When Orgeron was at Ole Miss, he hired Kiffin's younger brother, Chris, to be a graduate assistant on the Rebels' defensive staff.

Somebody else with SEC ties to look for on Kiffin's staff would be Tim Davis, who's the director of player personnel at Alabama under Nick Saban. Davis was Saban's assistant offensive line coach with the Miami Dolphins. Prior to that, he spent three seasons on the Southern California staff alongside Kiffin and coached the Trojans' offensive line.

- That sounds like a dream team! I'm having a hard time figuring out whether I'd rather have them or Gruden :)

If Kiffin brings Orgeron and his brother with him, I think I'd take them before Gruden. The fact that Kiffin can get started as soon as the season is over is a big plus, especially when you have the possibility of loosing a part of the recruiting class.

Just heard on the radio that Lane Kiffin is in Knoxville this morning playing golf. It may be a rumor or it may be true...

Yes, I'm meeting him at the par three near Concord Marina.

That's easy. Gruden is NOT coming. So Kiffen would be the easy choice.

I am all for Coach Kiffin. I would rather have him than most others that are being mentioned, he would put together a nice staff and bring some life into a dead program.

I would rather have Gruden every day of the week and twice on Sunday. Lane Kiffin is overrated. And I definitely don't want a "family" situation on our new coaching staff. Have you ever worked with family?

I think that Gruden at this point would be a long shot simply because we would lose so much time until the end of the season and possibly the playoffs. That could really hurt us in recruiting and preparing for next season.

If Lane Kiffin can bring a staff like they are talking about....watch out

You ever seen his dad's defenses?

Can you imagine the defensive recruits that would want to come here to learn from Monte? He would put them on the fast track for the NFL.

That would be awesome! I think we would get great offensive recruits as well, since Lane also coached in the NFL even if it was for a short period of time. He and his Dad both would know what it takes to get players to the next level and recruits know that.

Now that I do agree with, Kids would be lining up to play for Monte...I would feel safer with Monte there as well in case Lane hits a rough streak he could help him out of it...Can't beat experience

I agree.

I really hope they make this hire. I am a Muschamp fan but I don't think he is stable enough right now.
