Landing Nico is great, but…

Are we more excited that we landed a 5 star QB or that we actually pulled the trigger on a big time NIL deal?

I think many on here are missing it.

My first thought was "Wow!! This is great". Then I thought a little harder...

Football is a team sport. How is a $8M frosh QB going to "mesh" with the rest of his team - many of whom are on scholly only with free tuition/books/food/housing/healthcare? I can just see some offensive lineman from Martin TN saying, "I'm playing b/c I love the game and want to play for TN. This guy came here because he was bought and paid for". There could serious team-chemistry repercussions.

I thought the same about the last cant miss qb. My own opinion would be to grab a decent upperclassman qb. Like what we have now. A 17 year old with lots of money is not may not be what a team needs.

Just cautious and skeptical we have been burned before so many times in the last 15 years it’s BVS. The odds are this kid eventually transfers to Georgia or Bama or Ohio St.
Yea your trolling history says otherwise “fan”.

Every team is going to have that problem if it really becomes one. Ball out, have some personality and stop whining, then maybe they can get some sweet NIL money.
QB's are always going to be the highest paid

Makes me glad we have Heupel. Culture in his program is fantastic, his players love him. I think he’s the perfect guy to find the balancing act here, and now he has his QB.

You think the portal being what it is that players will stick around and compete? Now add NIL. If your son is a 24 qb and TN just signed this guy he should look at UT? Heupel will be under tremendous pressure to start this qb immediately, don’t kid yourself. Not pressure from the agency, from the fans. Any qb starting over him would be under so much scrutiny.
Didn't know there was a "we pay you play clause" .

You got stuck at Nico alone.

Don't imagine one player earning $8M while 115 other lads earn nothing*. Instead, imagine one player earning $8m, several others earning $3-6m, and half the roster earning a half a million or more.

Yes, there will be those who get more than others. That has always been true, of every imaginable resource, whether cheerleaders giving the QB (but not the linemen) their number, or professors giving the star receiver (but not the tight end) a break on his essay, or 85 getting a scholarship while another 35 pay their own way to college.

There has always been, and will always be, inequity among teammates. The lads figure it out. Good leadership from the coaching staff helps, but the lads can sort this out on their own. Especially given that a significant percentage of them, not just one guy, will be getting paid.

* which, btw, I think we all know hasn't been completely true at any power 5 program in the country...the $100 handshake has always been around, and yes Reggie Bush's mom got her house paid for by some USC boosters, and yes those Bama players always seem to have a shiny new $50,000 car after they arrive on campus. So let's don't forget the past as we ponder the future.

Same posters bellyaching would be the one’s plagiarizing threads declaring that not doing “what it took to close this one” proves we’ll never be relevant. 😏

I hope these kids that sign these contracts understand that now there is job to live up to. You cant just rest on the fact that you pulled in millions and haven't even played a snap. And I hope the businesses that are throwing money into this pot, will pull the money out if the kid they are supporting (ie Nico) underperforms. This is now a job. Perfromance reviews should be a thing. If you don't perform, your contract will not be renewed.

You hope these KIDS lose their income if they underperform...What kind of terrible person are you? In reality they are being paid to advertise something. They will have to make appearances, maybe sign some autographs or something. But they are NOT being paid to play football!!!!

I think you're closer to right than he was, for sure.

But let's fine tune it a bit better than that.

They're being paid for making appearances, signing autographs, and so on, yes. But the reason those appearances will be well-attended and the autographs sought out is because the lads will be ... you got it ... stand-out football players.

Nico is probably a great kid. But no one is going to donate $8m worth of funding to Spyre to spend time with him, or get merchandise signed by him, if he's not (a) projected to become or (b) actually filling the role as a team's star QB. That's WHY he is in demand. As far as I know, it's the only reason he is. Maybe he sings well, too, idk.

In other words, it is a little bit facetious to totally divorce the Spyre contract and the $8m that flows out of it from what Nico is expected to (eventually, if not immediately) do on the field.

Gotta be fair about it.

Are we more excited that we landed a 5 star QB or that we actually pulled the trigger on a big time NIL deal? Don’t get me wrong, I’m thrilled that we got Nico and I have no doubt he’ll be a difference maker. However, we have had some 5 stars and highly rated players over our 15 year decline that were not able to single handedly change our program. Just wondering if all of the excitement and comments stating that we ‘are back’ is more about Nico or just as much about UT finally stepping up to spend some money and aggressively compete with other schools? Is there some shock that we were finally willing to get in the game and not wait until it’s too late on this one? (Example, never spending money to proactively hire a top 5 coach). Maybe we are just as excited to realize that UT really DOES have deep pockets after all and we are now willing to put it to use.
No offense, but you're over analyzing things.

Thanks for the explanation. I did assume that multiple players would get paid, just not made multi-millionaires straight out of high school. Also, I assumed that there is a limited total amount that can be paid, but I'm not sure of the $-bucket's size. My point is that we've all seen this before in professional sports. Some players come in with huge contracts and the Ws don't automatically start piling up. I'm happy he's coming to K-town but as a CEO once told me, "It's the unintended consequences of decisions that keep me up at night".

It’s really pumping sunshine to not say “omg we got a great 5 star qb, he probably sucks or will transfer”?
