"The school has yet to provide defensive line coach Lance Thompson's contract." Andrew Gribble 12-13-11

UT has strength in numbers with Ron McKeefery's contract : govolsxtra.com

It makes me wonder if we parted ways. The players don't seem shocked. Did they know ahead of time? The recruits don't either. Maybe Dooley had other plans. I don't think they will come out and say they let him go , sort of the way Steele left Clemson. I liked Thompson and wanted him to stay. I'm just starting to think it was our choice and not his. If this is the case , I hope the media picks up on it. Even if they do they will still probably drag us through the dirt as usual.

What also makes me wonder is Couch was saying they wanted him to be our DC. He doesn't seem surprised that he is gone. Maybe he knew that he was gone and the only way he could stay is if we hired him as DC. As we know that didn't happen. Several people on this site said he didn't want the job as DC. They also have said he likes being a position coach and enjoys his life. He didn't want total control of the defense. Bama fans are saying "he needs to know his role and he isn't defensive coordinator materal". He doesn't come across as someone upset about the situation. Lance talked about Saban in a bad way when he got here. What would keep him from doing that about CDD?

You can look at it like both parted ways , but if we didn't want to keep him as our DL coach , it seems it was our decision. To me it explains why he left for the same position he had here in 2010. LB coach. It's just my opinion , but I think he wanted to stay. He said it was business and it's possible he didn't have a position to coach on this staff going foward.

Could it be that he got wind of Smart possibly leaving for a HC position and thinks going back will get him on the inside track to DC at Bama?

I'm not sure he wants to be a DC , but it could happen at Alabama. Everyone knows Saban runs their defense. It would look good on his resume. I'm just not sure Saban would promote him. If he does , he is the next head coach in a few years at (fill in the blank). Seems to be what happens when you are part of the Saban tree.

Didn't Thompson leave Bama, at least in part, because of a relationship with a female student that was starting to leak out? I suppose she has since graduated and moved on.

Dooley and Thompson did not get along. Thompson was not going to be the DC. But Dooley should have at least interviewed him. That would have been the decent thing to to do. Lance Thompson felt disrespected by not receiving at least an interview so he left. He did not get a contract extension more security at Bama so he left. Means only one hangover from Kiffin's coaching staff.

Of course he would leave a place where he had no contract , for security at a place where he could go back to work. I HATE that he left , but it's not up to us to make that choice. The lack of an interview and feeling disrespected because of it is all opinion at this point. I will say if it was me (And I wanted the job) I would feel the same. Nobody knows if he actually wanted the job or not. We know for a fact that he disrespected Saban publicly and he's going back to be a position coach for him. If he feels the same about CDD , maybe he will say so. So far he isn't saying anything bad about this situation. I just hope the truth is told. If his contract was up and he knew it was time to move on , no harm done. He has landed himself a nice job at a place I thought he hated. A place I thought he would never be welcome again. In the end , he didn't get retained at Tennessee and he didn't get a promotion at Alabama. Dooley and Thompson possibly agreed to part ways. I don't know if they get along or not , but we heard the same about LT and Saban. He also has kids in Alabama and that might be a major reason why he is going back. I wish him well , except when he is on the other sideline.

Who would hire Kirby Smart as a HC?

Someone like Austin Peay?

You're funny. If UT hired him as HC, you would be saying how great a hire it was, and he was the best up and coming HC, and blah..blah..blah (insert your sheepish, uninformed comments here) :lolabove:

L. Thompson is a standup guy and has showed some class with us here at Tennessee. However, I'm not sold on his ability like most on here are. He has not recruited like we thought he could here and the positions he has coached has not been that spectacular. Yeah, he hasn't had much to work with, but i'm looking at his track record at Bama as well. With that being said, if he does decide to go, I don't think we will take a huge loss like most think.

I had read on another site that Hart had said no current coach would receive an extension this year and that he would not reward that type of performance by the football team.

If this is true about LT not doing so much with recruiting, as he did at Alabama, we might have the same issue with CSS. And if so, maybe the word "Alabama" recruits itself.

If that is true, no wonder that all the rats have abandoned ship.

The bottom line is a three year contract with Bama is better than a one year deal with the vols. His contract was set to expire at the end of this year. Personally, I think Hart caused all this turnover when he decided not to reward mediocrity. I would have liked to see us keep LT on staff. Don't know if Hart is going to be a good AD or not. Time will tell.

Think about it - there is a reason someone hasn't snatched up Kirby Smart as their head coach. There's a reason somebody hasn't snatched up Phil Fulmer as their head coach. These things are not just an oversight by every college in America with an opening. These guys seldom if ever are even mentioned much less getting an interview.
