Interesting stats. Can't excuse the high number of turnovers committed, but I believe that there is a reason for the low number
of turnovers we force from the other team.
It's the type of defense we play. We don't go for steals or traps excessively. While those actions would lead to more turnovers, it would also lead to better shots and a higher shooting percentage by our opponents, when the trap is broken or the attempted steal missed. Playing straight up means limiting easy shots and letting our rebounding and shot blocking prevent even more easy looks from lay-ups and offensive putbacks by our opponents.
Where do the LV's rank in defensive field goal percentage ?

Excellent counterpoint and one I'd never fully considered, thanks for that. We've excelled recently in defensive FG%, especially last year and the 2019-20 season.

  • 20-21: .363 (28th/1st)
  • 19-20: .338 (6th/2nd)
  • 18-19: .415 (252nd/4th)
  • 17-18: .380 (63rd/4th)

Good find--embarrassing and direct indictment of Harper. It's lousy coaching.

She has taken her top value to be rebound margin, which is fine, but not at the expense of turnover margin. The fact that those numbers are consistently woeful does speak out to her coaching decisions. She doesn't need to have all the answers about how to turn it around, but she does need to acknowledge to herself that she clearly needs some type of specialist on her staff to help her. Otherwise, the LVs under her guidance will never go to a Final 4 (I can't imagine that there has ever been a team with similar numbers that has been) and that this will end up being a failed hire. And this is from someone who has been fairly positive about KJH.

Sad thing is I thought the point guard issue was solved. But last night I'm actually not sure that the issue was point guard play. I think the fact that she played so many players in multiple situations that the continuity of this team hasn't jelled yet.

I Dont believe it is a position issue it is the attitude of the team and coaches somehow they believe they can win without valuing the ball. I have been crying about turnovers for a decade now. I thought when the last coach departed so would the TOs but it is getting worse. Our two stars committed as many as the whole OS team committed almost. How if you want to win can you be so careless with the ball? This baffles me, yet I hear how competitive we are “bull”.

Horston is part of the turnover issue but she is also a big reason why this team will stay competitive in games versus other top teams. They have to coach better, its that simple. When you see so many turnovers from many players across the board, it screams coaching to me.

I simply do not believe that you can maintain consistency on your team running players in and out, without a core five who receive a large chunk of floor time. Like Ohio State you have to have a core group and three or four subs that provide a break for the starters. The problem is KJH has coached that way for a long time. It worked for her at the mid level but has not given the same results at the power 5 level. It is up to her to find the cure for the turnover issues and find consistency, if not then she is not the person for the job.

I would have subbed in the "bottom five" and made the rest of them watch them until they made me sure, they wanted to go back in

But I would never, ever go 7-8 points without a stoppage.
Not unless the game was already out of range

Unless something changes dramatically in the next few weeks, it's time to move on. Hate it for Kellie because everyone wanted her to be the answer. But apparently she isn't. Hopefully White already has a good candidate or two on speed dial.

Looks like the Ladys are starting where they left off last year. To's, can't get the ball in, can't defend the 3 's at all.
