MATCH CENTRAL: Tennessee vs. Lipscomb​

Tennessee women's soccer is set to square off against Lipscomb at 1 p.m. ET Sunday at Regal Stadium.

The Lady Vols are coming of consecutive wins over Chattanooga and ETSU in which they posted a pair of clean sheets.

Freshman forward Reese Mattern led the way for Tennessee against East Tennessee and found the back of the net in the 64th minute for the game-winner. Tennessee's Michigan natives, Sammi Woods and Mac Midgley, assisted on Mattern's first collegiate goal.

SCOUTING THE BISONS: Lipscomb enters Sunday's match with a 1-0-1 record after opening its season with a draw to Evansville and winning 3-0 over Alabama A&M in its second game of the season.

MATCHUP HISTORY: UT holds a 2-0-1 record against the Bisons. Last season, Tennessee picked up a 3-0 road win over Lipscomb.

REESE IS ROLLIN': Mattern has made an early impact in her maiden season so far, notching seven shots with four of them coming on frame while also registering a game-winner against ETSU.

SAMMI THE SPARK: Woods continues to provide a spark for the Lady Vols and has registered a goal, assist and created five chances through three matches.
UP NEXT: Tennessee will return home to Regal Stadium and are set to face their third in-state foe of the season, taking on the Lipscomb Bisons at 1 p.m. ET on Sunday.

PROTECTING THE NET: In its match against ETSU, Tennessee allowed zero shots on target and also limited the Bucs to four shots total. Additionally, the Lady Vols gave up only one chance a match prior against UTC.

Tennessee soccer attack flourishes in win over Lipscomb​

Tennessee soccer’s offense came to life on Sunday, giving the Lady Vols a 3-0 win over Lipscomb.

After taking advantage of an own goal, Kate Runyon gave Tennessee (3-1-0) a two-goal lead over the Bisons (1-1-1). Ally Brown’s header on a corner put the Lady Vols up three.

With the win, the Lady Vols have won three straight games, all coming against in-state opponents. Tennessee will look to keep its win streak alive next Sunday when it travels to Duke.


Here are some takeaways from the win.

Lady Vols start hot

For the first time this season, Tennessee scored a first-half goal. In the seventh minute, Reese Mattern put a ball into Lipscomb’s penalty area, which a Bison defender deflected into the goal. For the second time this season, the Lady Vols took advantage of an own goal.

Later in the half, Luciana Latino put a ball into the box and found Runyon, who converted the scoring opportunity for her first goal of the season. Latino earned her first assist with Tennessee on the play.


Tennessee recorded eight first-half shots, putting two on target. At the other end, Ally Zazzara saved the only shot put on target by Lipscomb.

Repeated corner kicks produce third goal

The Lady Vols started the second half strong, winning eight corners in the first seven minutes of the half. On the eighth attempt from the corner flag, Sarah Bridenstine found Brown at the back post for her first career goal.

Bridenstine recorded her first assist with Tennessee after producing four assists for Michigan last season. She has made an impact this season both in the attack and defensively.

Tennessee defense remains strong

After allowing some pressure early in the match, the Lady Vols shut down Lipscomb’s attack for most of the game. The Bisons only put one shot on goal and recorded just five shots in the game.

Brown played all 90 minutes for Tennessee, spending most of the game working alongside Leah Klurman and Kennedy Price in Tennessee’s back line. Freshmen Jasmine Boggs, Nyla Blue and Sydney Miller also participated in the defensive effort for the Lady Vols.
