Guys, there is no excuse for the loss tonight, though we all thought it might be a squeaker. The way I see it though is the primary reason we dominated the first half and held the 3rd quarter is talent. In the fourth we melted on defense because the guys were gassed and our depth simply wasnt there.

Think about all the players we have lost on defense and that defensive line and then, who goes out just before the half? Maggitt - and that left a gaping hole in our defense. We simply dont have the talent in the third and forth string to keep the jets on in the 4th quarter against a well stacked program.

Guys were missing tackles left and right and not moving nearly so fast because we dont have the depth to rotate. Granted, their QB was able to bullet some passes but once our Oline got gassed and minus Maggitt they started letting Striker and OU's pass rush through, our running game suffered and so did our offense production. Yes Dobbs seemed lackluster later in the game but he had a lot more defenders in his face than in the first half. Hard to swallow all those dropped balls by receivers tho.

None of that excuses too conservative play calling and some glaring errors - but maybe those decisions and mistakes were made because of gassed players and coaches knowing they were gassed. Genius play calling doesnt work when players are too tired to execute.

On the one hand, I am super pissed and disappointing we collapsed when we needed that win. Yet I do remember that this OU team crushed us at will last year and most everyone thinks OU is far better this year than last year, so we have improved a LOT. What does this mean going forward? I think it says that we have the talent to compete and win against all but the elite teams in the SEC this year. However, against teams with deep stacked talent, we do not have the depth to keep it going all 4 quarters. That means a likely 8-4 or maybe 9-3 regular season. Not what we want but nothing to be ashamed about.

Not a lack of depth, offense left defense out to dry, any d will eventually get gassed and yield plays.

Was proud of our D (except Jumper, but he's a walk on, our expectations prolly too high)

How many recruiting classes do you think Butch needs before he has the requisite depth to not blow double digit leads in the 4th quarter at home?

lol. We'll be blaming depth and inexperience if Butch is here for 6 years. Unbelievable. Time to call a spade a spade.

You are flat out deluding yourself. We did absolutely nothing on offense for three quarters after taking the lead. Depth had nothing to do with the failures in this game.

I agree. There is no getting around the fact that this loss was DEVASTATING. We really pulled defeat out of the jaws of victory and thats what makes it hurt so bad. If it was a back and forth game where they just made one more play than us, then it would be understandable. But we dominated for 3 quarters and laid an egg in the 4th.

I am however optimistic like you are with regard to the rest of the season. This team is uber talented. And very young. We won't face 2 better QBs the rest of the way more likely than Matt Johnson and Baker Mayfield (that kid made every play). We'll bounce back and will lots of games. Its now on the coaches to actually start letting the young guys play rather than holding them back.

the lack of a good running game in the 2nd half is what caused the Vols to lose this game, hopefully our OC has learned that you can't win a game by running sweeps all the time,I personally thought they should have ran the ball up the middle a lot more,it was working in the 1st half

Not having Maggitt and Danny O hurt us tonight.

I sure hope TK is back in two weeks.

Pass defense was much better but some penalties and a few miscues hurt.

And we need one more stud LB to emerge.

Wasn't working in the 4th quarter when OU put 8 in the box.

nice try

nice try

Giving OU 3 extra possessions starting in the 3rd quarter by running 27 seconds off the clock each series before we punted didnt work either.

The OC has been coaching football for 30+ years. He should have learned that by now

We have a way of making QBs look great in the 4th quarter. Doesn't matter who it is
